Chapter 47: Stop Bothering Her
Chapter 47: Stop Bothering Her
Before long, they arrived at the downtown area. Iris decided to have lunch at a steak restaurant because she particularly craved grilled beef after her rebirth. Soon, they arrive at one of the best steakhouses in town.
This wasn’t Iris’s first time here; she had visited a few times with Justin—Iris’ younger self.
After she ordered her favorite steak, she handed the menu to Xavier for his choice. However, Xavier calmly replied, "Order the same as you." He then glanced at his cell phone, ignoring her.
She promptly placed their orders and returned her attention to her cell phone, finding it difficult to initiate a friendly conversation with him. Instead, she started reading about Alberto West. She needed to locate that vile man’s house.
After finding Alberto’s house route, she opens another application, a tracker. Since last night she has put a tracker in his cell phone to know his whereabouts. When she saw a red dot still at Silenthill University, she frowned.
’Could this old man still have an afternoon class?’ she wondered.
While Iris was planning to carry out her mission, her cell phone suddenly vibrated, and the name ’Ruby the Witch’ appeared on the screen. It startled her to realize she had saved Ruby’s contact number under that name in her phonebook.
"Why is this bitch calling me?" Iris murmured quietly, but Xavier, who was now glancing at her, caught her words clearly.
Observing the darkening of Iris’ emotions, Xavier asks, "Who is it?" He was concerned that the call might be from Alberto.
Iris was taken aback by Xavier’s question. She slowly raised her head to look at him, "Ruby. It seems I should take this call..."
"Hmm, you should hear what she has to say. Turn on the speaker. If she tries to play any tricks on you, I’ll handle her," Xavier assured her.
With a nod, Iris accepted the call immediately.
"Hey, Iris... it’s Ruby," her voice came from the other end, trying to sound friendly.
"Hello," Iris responded in a flat tone. She felt weird speaking to this girl. "What is it?"
"Ugh... Well... where are you now, Iris? Are you at your cafe? Can we meet? I have something to tell you," Ruby’s voice sounded urgent, yet there was an underlying tension.
"Sorry, I’m not at home. You can say it here, Ruby," Iris said coolly, glancing at Xavier in front of her. She could tell he was engrossed in his cell phone screen, but she suspected he was overhearing their conversation.
"Well, it’s about—" There was a pause for a few seconds as if Ruby was struggling with her words. "I just wanted to ask, are you seriously dating Xavier?" Ruby’s voice was shaking, revealing her seething anger.
Iris didn’t answer immediately. She glanced at Xavier, silently seeking his opinion. Upon seeing his nod, a signal of permission, she felt her heart race faster than usual.
After a few deep breaths, Iris replied to Ruby, her voice steady, "Yes. Why do you ask?" She kept her calm, but inside, she was fighting a mix of nervousness and embarrassment as Xavier stared deeply at her.
"Iris, why did you accept him?" Ruby’s friendly tone abruptly turned sharp. "Didn’t I tell you to stop chasing Xavier? And why do you still dare to chase him? And dare to date him? Did you forget—"
Instantly, Iris’ phone was in Xavier’s hand. He cut off Ruby with a cold voice that seethed anger, "Ruby Winters, stop bothering Iris. And who the hell are you questioning my decision to date her?"
Xavier’s face darkened as he listened to Ruby vent her anger on Iris. He didn’t understand why, but hearing someone verbally bully Iris ignited fierce anger within him. He couldn’t restrain himself from speaking up in her defense.
On the other end, Ruby was shocked by Xavier’s angry yet icy tone. She stared at her phone screen as if verifying she hadn’t dialed the wrong number.
"X-Xavier—"
"Don’t ever call my name, and let this be the last time you contact Iris or speak to her. If I hear you’ve done it again, you’ll have to deal with me!"
Beep!
After he ended the call, Xavier returned the phone to Iris. He resumed looking at his own device as if nothing had happened.
Everything happened so fast.
Iris didn’t even realize that her cell phone had been returned to her. She glanced at Xavier sitting across from her, then down at the phone in her palm.
’How did he move so quickly? I didn’t even notice when he returned my phone.’ Iris wondered, feeling puzzled.
She opened her mouth a few times, attempting to ask, but no words came out. She could only sigh deeply.
Silence hung between them briefly, though it was quickly broken when a female waitress finally arrived to serve their steak.
They ate in silence.
For a while, Iris was utterly absorbed in her food. This was the first time she had tasted it, and she agreed with her younger self’s claim that the steak in this place was the best.
After finishing her meal, she finally glanced at Xavier and was surprised to see that his steak was still untouched. However, he had already cut it into small pieces, ready to eat.
’Did he wait for the steak to cool down before eating it?’ Iris wondered as she met Xavier’s eyes. She was taken aback by his piercing gaze.
"W-Why aren’t you eating?" Iris asked curiously. She was worried, afraid that she was eating too fast or that this man was eating too slowly.
"I’m vegetarian," Xavier said casually, pushing his steak toward Iris and replacing her empty plate. "You can have mine."
Iris was utterly speechless.
’What the hell!?’ Iris can’t help but curse silently. ’Why hadn’t he mentioned it before? Why bother eating at this place if he was a vegetarian?’ She couldn’t quite understand how his mind worked.
Gosh!
"Xavier, you should have told me. I could have chosen a restaurant that offers vegetarian menus," she said, feeling guilty for having to eat alone.
