Chapter 48: Worry

Iris left the restaurant feeling quite full. She had eaten a lot — two servings, to be precise. Even though she had enjoyed the delicious food, she couldn’t help but feel a tad embarrassed about consuming two servings in front of Xavier.

She secretly wished she could just vanish from the scene, but, of course, that wasn’t an option. Thus, she had no choice but to bear with it. She silently hoped that Xavier wouldn’t consider offering her more food in the future.

As she predicted, she continued to drive Xavier’s car as they made their way back to his house. She had a feeling that Xavier would put in a good word with her grandmother regarding her driving skills.

Iris’ plan for today, she will drive her new car from Xavier’s house to hers. She had a clear goal for the day: to complete her first mission, to kill that bastard Alberto West.

As they left downtown, the streets gradually became quieter, only passed by a few other vehicles. Not long after, their car passed her house. She saw that there were still many cars parked in front of Gray Cafe. And one car picks her attention — Ruby Winters’ car.

’Why does that bitch still come to Gray cafe? What is her intention?’

Iris was curious and wanted to make a stop, yet she also needed to go to Xavier’s house to retrieve a gun. Feeling somewhat puzzled, she glanced at Xavier, sitting there quietly with his eyes closed.

"Xavier, are you sleeping?" Iris asks, her voice barely audible.

He responded without opening his eyes, "You may talk. I’ll listen."

She couldn’t help but smile secretly as she returned her gaze to the road.

"Thanks for speaking up for me earlier," she said, breaking the silence. "Ruby can be such a pain in the ass. She’s always threatened to make things difficult for my grandmother’s cafe," Iris paused, reminiscing about her younger self.

"I know," Xavier’s voice cut in unexpectedly.

She glanced at him, surprised to see his brilliant golden eyes fixed on her. Her curiosity flashes through her eyes.

’How did Xavier find out? Does he secretly stalk me?’

Seeming to understand her curiosity, he added, "Don’t overthink. I heard about it from Justin. That guy talks a lot about you—"

"I’m sorry, Xavier. I was too obsessed with you in the past," Iris laughed bitterly. "But, hey—" she took a deep breath before continuing, "I’m not like that anymore. Believe me, I won’t trouble you with my childish nature..." Her honesty echoed in her words.

At this moment, her goal was not to find a lover but to carry out the GH mission. It was the only thing she could do; negligence might result in heavenly punishment —at least, that was what Gavriel had told her. She wasn’t sure if the man was telling the truth or just wanted to tease her.

Xavier fell silent at Iris’ words. Several times, he wanted to voice his thoughts, but not a single word came out each time he tried. It was an odd sensation.

"About Ruby Winters, I’ll make sure she doesn’t bother you again," he finally managed to say. However, it wasn’t exactly what he had intended to convey. He glanced at her briefly, curious about her sudden quietness.

"What’s wrong, Iris?" Xavier asks, noticing the shift in her expression. She appeared worried and tense.

"I saw Ruby’s car at the Gray Cafe," Iris said, giving him a quick glance.

"Are you sure?" Xavier straightened up in his seat. Upon seeing her nod, he said, "You don’t need to return there. I’ll have someone look into it."

Though Xavier couldn’t read Iris’ thoughts, the anxiety in her eyes was evident. He understood what needed to be done.

Xavier reached for her cell phone and texted Niles, instructing him to investigate the situation. He was concerned that Ruby might take harmful actions against Granny Gray — that girl was psycho.

"Thank you, Xavier. I really appreciate it," Iris expressed with gratitude.

"Hmm," he responded with a slight nod.

Before long, their car stopped right in front of Xavier’s house. She swiftly turned off the car engine and followed Xavier inside.

The house looked different in the daylight, surprising her. This time, Xavier led her to an area she hadn’t been to the previous night. They proceeded towards the rear of the house.

Arriving there, she was taken aback by the sight of the spacious living room with glass walls that opened to the beautiful hilly forest and a sprawling blue lake that stretched as far as the eye could see.

’Wow, what a view!’ Iris marveled to herself.

"You may sit down first. I need to speak to someone before I lead you to my weapon collection," Xavier’s voice snapped at Iris.

"Okay," she replied, then returned to ignoring Xavier again. She sat on the black leather sofa, her eyes fixed on the stunning scenery before her.

’No wonder Justin mentioned that his house would be stunning during spring and fall,’ she couldn’t help but agree with Justin.

"Iris, you’ve finally arrived!"

Iris chuckled at the sound of Justin’s voice from behind. She turned to look at him, wondering how he managed to show up just as she was thinking about him.

"Where’s my car?" she asked him in a hushed tone, concerned about Xavier overhearing. "You have to make sure Xavier doesn’t know that I’m buying that car!"

"Relax..." Justin replied calmly as he walked closer to Iris, stopping a few meters from her. "What would you like to drink?" he offered.

"Anything hot. Coffee or hot chocolate," she said.

"Would you like some lunch? We have plenty of food here. Spaghetti, Wagyu Steak. If you want Korean or Japanese barbecue, we have that too..." Justin’s eyes beamed, excited to feed Iris. This girl loved eating; surprisingly, she never gained weight even though she ate a lot.

Iris didn’t reply to him right away. Her mind remembered something, ’Didn’t Xavier say there’s no food in his house? Why did Justin say otherwise?’ She was puzzled by Justin’s offer.
