Chapter 41: I Can Help You

Chapter 41: I Can Help You

Iris couldn’t help but chuckle at how terrified Justin’s voice sounded. She stowed her phone in her bag and glanced at Xavier. "Did you know you scared the hell out of him?"

"Yes, I know. Well, he deserved worse! But his unquestioned loyalty to me saves him." Xavier responded with an impassive expression.

"Xavier, when you’re talking about the driving lessons, do you really mean it?" she asked, shifting the conversation to another topic. She wanted to know if Xavier was genuinely committed to this or if he was just putting on an act.

"Of course! And we can start today. I’ll let you drive when we get home," he replied. "Though I’m sure your driving skill doesn’t need to be tested. I can sense your driving skill has just improved exponentially. Am I right?"

Iris was lost for words.

’Am I that obvious!? Does he really notice my sudden change?’ Iris slowly glanced at him, but she couldn’t catch his eyes; he was focused on driving, completely ignoring her. Just as Iris thought she would just rest her eyes before they reached the campus, his following words startled her.

"About the gun that you are looking for, I think I can help you."

Once again, Iris turned to look at him, but Xavier still didn’t meet her gaze. She said, "I would be grateful if you could help me. I can pay any price."

Xavier remained silent, simply nodding in response. His mind was racing, trying to understand why this girl was so desperate to own a gun. He knew her earlier reason was complete nonsense. And the biggest question in his mind now was; Can she use a gun?

"When can you take me to see the gun?" Iris asked urgently. She needed the gun before she could eliminate her first target. Time was pressing — she had only two days to complete this mission, or she would fail and miss out on her first prize as an assassin for GH.

Based on what Gavriel had informed her, she was determined to secure her first prize; this reward held significant value and potential benefits for her future. That’s why she was so resolute in accomplishing this initial task.

Xavier pondered for a moment before responding, "We can head there after class. Is that okay with you?"

"Yes," Iris nodded eagerly. Her schedule was open after class, so she was ready to go wherever Xavier would lead her. "Where is it located? Is it also in this city?"

"It’s at my house," Xavier replied, briefly glancing at Iris. He noticed her gasp but swiftly returned his attention to the road, dismissing her surprised expression. "Why do you seem surprised?" he inquired without shifting his gaze from the road.

"Oh, umm, I’m not surprised. Just curious," Iris stammered, her voice betraying a hint of unease stemming from her own thoughts.

"Curious about what?" His tone sharpened slightly as he cast another quick glance her way. ’What’s going on in her head? Why does she seem suspicious?’ he mused internally.

"Are you involved in arms dealing?" Iris asked nonchalantly. However, inside, she suspected that Xavier might also have ties to the underworld, given his secluded lifestyle — living in the wilderness on a vast estate halfway up Lonely Mountain. Such luxury was typically associated with those involved in businesses like weapons or drug trading.

Xavier found himself momentarily at a loss for words in response to her question. He wasn’t sure whether to be amused or annoyed by it.

How could she even suspect him of being involved in arms dealing? The idea of selling guns is ridiculous. Well, building weapons factories in every country would still be fine. However, that was not something he had ever considered.

After releasing a silent, deep exhale, he turned his gaze toward her.

"Iris Gray, it seems you have a talent for fantasy novel writing!" he playfully said, hoping to dispel her unfounded curiosity. "I’m just a regular 19-year-old student. How on earth could I be selling weapons?"

On the other hand, Iris felt like sinking into the car seat, her cheeks flush with embarrassment for letting such a negative assumption cross her mind. Gosh!

"S-Sorry," she managed to utter.

Xavier continued, crafting a cover story with a calm and patient tone, "My grandfather and father were fond of collecting weapons. We have a sizable collection. You can take a look and choose what you like. But honestly, those things are pretty much for show these days. I’m not a fan of guns myself..." Of course, he lied. All weapons collection is his.

She nodded, absorbing his explanation while trying to hide her lingering embarrassment. The rest of the drive continued with a less tense atmosphere as Xavier skillfully guided the car through the streets. And before long, their car parked right before their faculty.

Iris took her backpack and stepped out of the car. She matched her pace with Xavier’s, heading towards the building. However, not long after, the sound of footsteps approached from behind.

"Hey, good morning, Iris!" Justin’s cheerful voice echoed behind them. "You’re here at last. I’ve got something to tell you, alone..." he chimed in, attempting to put some distance between Iris and Xavier. He was concerned about facing any punishment from his lord from his earlier phone call.

"It’s fine to talk here, Justin," Iris responded, glancing at him as he caught up. She also noticed Niles tagging along behind them.

They continued walking, following Xavier, who led several steps ahead.

"But, this is..." Justin’s voice trails off.

’Just spill it out!!’ Justin flinched as Xavier’s irritated voice resonated in his mind. He cleared his throat and forced a smile in Iris’s direction.

"Regarding the car..." Justin’s voice lowered, a conscious effort to keep their conversation discreet from the other classmates mingling in the lobby. However, Iris came to an abrupt halt.

"Xavier, Niles, you two can head to class," Iris said.

Before Xavier could say anything, she motioned for Justin to follow her to a quieter corner of the building’s lobby. She didn’t want Xavier to get wind of her intention to buy a secondhand car from Justin’s friend.
