Chapter 40: Grandson In Law
Chapter 40: Grandson In Law
Iris joined in, her eating briefly interrupted by her grandmother initiating a conversation about their morning plans — testing her driving skills, a plan that had been postponed.
"Alright, we’ll do that tomorrow, Grandma," Iris responded in a hushed tone, an inward sigh accompanying her words. Actually, she doesn’t need any tests. Her driving skills surpass most people holding driving licenses out there. She even has a license to drive heavy trucks, jet-engine airplanes, propeller airplanes, helicopters, and speedboats.
Xavier finally finished his breakfast and now turned his attention to Iris. He asked, "Interested in learning to drive?"
"Iris can drive, but she had a traumatic experience a year ago," Cassandra explained.
"Ah, I see," he replied. No wonder Granny Gray drives her to campus every morning.
Iris managed a wry smile toward Xavier. "Well, I want to drive again, but Grandma wants to ensure I’m okay by making me redo the driving test first. She’s worried my trauma might resurface when I’m driving alone," she explained, then downed her milk in a single gulp.
She looked at her grandmother before saying, "I have morning classes and should be back by the afternoon. You can test me later, Grandma."
"Iris, you don’t need to trouble Grandma with that. I can help," Xavier suddenly chimed in. With a serious expression, he turned to Cassandra. "Let me handle this, Granny Gray. I will ensure she can drive safely again."
"Really? Can you do that?" Cassandra’s eyes lit up hearing Xavier offer.
"Yes, Granny Gray. Leave it to me. You won’t need to drive her anymore, either. I’ll pick her up every morning and bring her back home," he assured with a smile that framed his handsome face.
"Thank you, thank you, Xavier. I’m so lucky to have such a sweet and kind future grandson-in-law like you..." Cassandra beamed, gazing affectionately at Xavier.
Cough! Cough!
Instantly, Iris began to cough uncontrollably. She couldn’t hold it in — the precious milk she had just taken a sip of spewed out from her mouth. Her face reddened with embarrassment. Hearing Grandma’s words referring to Xavier as a ’future grandson-in-law’ had caught her completely off guard.
While she was still recovering from her coughing, Xavier’s cold hand landed on her back, offering a gentle caress. Another shiver ran down her spine, and she instantly felt her face turn red like tomato sauce. It seemed like all her blood was rushing to her cheeks.
"Drink slowly, Iris," Xavier advised gently, offering her a glass of water. She quickly emptied the glass and shifted her gaze out the window, desperately trying to hide her embarrassment.
’Oh dear, Granny, what if you find out this guy is just pretending to be my boyfriend? What would you do?’
She thought Xavier would change the topic, but she was wrong. This man appeared to be enjoying his role as her boyfriend, even smiling at her grandmother.
"Grandma Gray, it’s my job as Iris’ boyfriend. No need to say thank you," he said with a smile, finishing his coffee.
"My dear grandson-in-law... I know I’m just too happy and grateful."
Iris, "..."
As the conversation between the two continued, Iris increasingly desired to disappear from the room. She could feel her face getting warmer and warmer.
"Iris, why is your face so red?" Cassandra suddenly noticed Iris’s flushed cheeks. "...oh dear, are you still shy around Xavier? No need to be shy, my dear."
Iris, feeling utterly mortified, couldn’t muster a response.
"Grandma, we have to get going now, or we’ll be late," Iris interrupted, rising from her chair. She signaled for Xavier to follow her. To her surprise, however, he seemed hesitant to leave.
"We still have a few more minutes, Iris," Xavier chimed in, continuing his conversation with Cassandra as if ignoring Iris’s attempt to leave.
"..."
Iris found herself at a loss for words. She excused herself and made her way upstairs to retrieve some items she needed to bring to campus.
****
Iris remained silent throughout the drive to campus. She didn’t dare to glance at Xavier.
Her gaze was fixed out the window as she tried to piece together words in her mind, attempting to initiate a conversation to lessen the awkwardness in the car. However, it seemed she still wasn’t used to being around this man. It felt so different compared to when she was with Justin; she could effortlessly express herself with him.
Just as Iris finally managed to come up with something to talk to Xavier about, her phone began to vibrate. Justin’s name lit up the screen.
"You can answer the call," Xavier said, noticing Iris’s hesitation as she stared at her phone.
Iris nodded and smiled, picking up the phone. "Hey, Justin, what’s up!?" she asked, brushing off his playful greeting.
"Darn it, Iris! Why are you giving me the cold shoulder?" Justin exclaimed. "Tsk! Did you know you sound just like your boyfriend now?" His words were followed by uproarious laughter on the other end.
Iris was utterly speechless. She felt rushed to abruptly end the call, fully aware that Xavier could hear Justin’s words. He spoke too loud.
"Iris, my friend, don’t be like him. He’s not fun at all," Justin continued.
"Are you finished now? If you are, I’m hanging up!" Iris snapped. She couldn’t talk to Justin while Xavier was beside her.
"Seems like you need some discipline," Xavier suddenly spoke in a casual tone. Still, it was enough to make Justin, on the other end, shiver. "We should meet up when I get there, Justin."
’Damn it, Iris, she’s in the same car with Lord Xavier!?’ Justin mentally scolded himself for being so careless with his words around Iris.
"Iris, hello... hello... are you still there?" Justin pretended his connection was acting up. "Ugh, looks like your signal is playing games, Iris. Fine, fine... I’ll end the call now. Bye!"
Beep!
Iris couldn’t help but chuckle at how terrified Justin’s voice sounded. She stowed her phone in her bag and glanced at Xavier. "Did you know you scared the hell out of him?"
