Chapter 35: The Beginning of an Extraordinary Journey
"Iris, you can’t enter that room!"
Xavier’s gentle yet serious tone made Iris stop in her tracks. "You are welcome to sleep anywhere and touch anything in this house except for that room. I hope you can understand," he said, stopping a few steps away from her as their eyes locked.
Iris nodded, deciding not to push the matter further. "Alright, I won’t go in there. Thank you for letting me stay in this room."
"You’re welcome, Iris. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask," Xavier said in a genuinely warm tone. "And you can choose clothes from those neatly arranged on the bed. Also, there are new toiletries for you to use in the bathroom." He said and walked toward the door.
"Thank you, and goodnight, Xavier," Iris said with a small smile.
"Goodnight," Xavier replied without looking back. He closed the door behind him as he left the room, leaving Iris alone with her thoughts and the mysterious black door that intrigued her.
After seeing Xavier close the door, she quietly dashed toward the door and locked it. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Xavier, but old habits from her previous life made her cautious. She didn’t want anyone sneaking into her room and seeing her sleeping, especially in someone else’s house.
Once the door was secured, Iris walked over to the bed and found some new clothes neatly laid out. She couldn’t help but smile as she picked up the black t-shirt and sweatpants. She then stepped into the bathroom to freshen up and change.
A few minutes later, she emerged from the bathroom, her hair pulled up into a bun, wearing Xavier’s oversized t-shirt and sweatpants. It felt strange wearing his clothes, but her clothes were stained with blood, and she had no other option now.
With everything seemingly settled for the night, Iris climbed into bed and pulled the covers over herself. However, just as she was about to settle into sleep, something important flashed through her mind, jolting her awake.
"How stupid, Iris! How could you forget something so important?" she scolded herself. It was crucial to erase any traces of her presence on X Bar’s CCTV footage to ensure that no one could track her down.
Iris saw her backpack on the study table in the corner. She quickly retrieved her laptop. Sitting on a chair, she wasted no time and let her fingers dance swiftly across the keyboard while her eyes remained intensely focused on the screen.
After a few minutes of trying to hack into X Bar’s CCTV system, her face darkened with frustration. Slowly, her fingers came to a halt, and she stared blankly at the monitor, her eyes reflecting confusion.
"Why can’t I find my traces in the CCTV footage?" she questioned herself, puzzled by the fact that her presence seemed to have been erased, even though she hadn’t done anything. It was as if someone had done it for her. The unexpected turn of events left her wondering who could have possibly helped her without her knowledge.
"Xavier!?" She called his name, realizing he was most likely to have helped her. "Yes, it must be him!"
As Iris pondered momentarily, her eyes fell on her coat lying on the sofa. "Should I ask him?" The thought made her stand up from her seat, and she retrieved her cell phone from her coat pocket.
Iris couldn’t wait until tomorrow to find out the truth, so she quickly typed and sent a message to Xavier. She knew she couldn’t relax until she found out who was behind the assistance she had received.
For a moment, Iris stared at her cell phone screen, eagerly awaiting Xavier’s response. However, as a few minutes passed, the screen remained dark.
"He is asleep?" Iris doubted. Most of the men she knew tended to stay up late, and she sensed that Xavier might be one of them. "He’s still awake now, right!? But why isn’t he answering my messages?"
Iris paced back and forth in the room, anxiously awaiting Xavier’s reply. However, a minute passed, and her phone remained silent.
Taking a deep breath, she realized she should try to sleep now. But just as she was about to get into bed, she heard a knock on the door. She stopped in her tracks and turned towards the door.
"Xavier?" Iris called out as she walked towards the door. When she opened it, she found Xavier standing there. Instantly, all her worries seemed to vanish, captivated by his handsome yet cold expression.
"Iris, sorry to bother you," Xavier said in his usual calm and cold tone. "...I forgot to mention, we have a lecture tomorrow at 9 in the morning. Did you know?"
Iris shook her head slowly. She hadn’t been paying much attention to her studies lately. It seemed she needed to check the files Justin gave her immediately, or she’d face academic problems.
"Please wake up early. We’ll stop by your house at 7 AM!"
"Hmm, I will."
"Okay, now go to sleep," Xavier said, turning to walk away.
Iris was taken aback to see Xavier already heading towards the stairs. "Xavier, wait..." she called out.
Xavier turned around to look at her. "Yes?"
"Did you delete the CCTV footage at X Bar?" She finally asked.
A frown appeared on Xavier’s face, and he seemed deep in thought for a moment. "Yes, I did. But it’s late now. We can talk about it tomorrow," he replied.
Xavier knew Iris must be curious, but discussing it now would probably keep her up all night. As for him, being a night creature, he didn’t need much sleep. He was just worried about her.
Iris nodded and quickly closed the door. She slowly walked over to the bed and lay down on it.
Thoughts of the day’s events swirled in Iris’ mind, but exhaustion soon overtook her, and she drifted off to sleep. In Xavier Darkwood’s home, in his room, and wearing his clothes, Iris Gray found herself in an unexpected situation, but little did she know that this night was just the beginning of an extraordinary journey she could have never imagined.
