Chapter 34: Pretend To Be a Lover
Chapter 34: Pretend To Be a Lover
Iris tried to hide the redness on her face by looking away. However, Xavier’s following sentence made her freeze instantly.
"We need to talk about our relationship, Iris..." Xavier paused, waiting for her to look at him. After their gaze met, he continued, "Tell me what you’re thinking."
Iris felt overwhelmed. She was conflicted about Xavier’s fake confession, wanting to refuse to play along. However, she didn’t want to hurt her grandmother or risk exposing her past, as they would likely discover her true identity if she rejected him.
Trying to appear calm, she secretly took a deep breath, "I know you don’t like me, Xavier, but I’m just so confused about how to handle this situation with my grandma. She already believes you have feelings for me, even though it was a lie."
"Why are you so concerned about disappointing her?" Xavier asked, genuinely curious.
Iris frowned at him, "Well, I don’t want to disappoint her! She’s my grandmother, and she’s been worried about me finding someone to love. I don’t want to shatter her hopes."
The corners of Xavier’s lips lifted slightly to form a faint smile when he saw her eyes lit up in annoyance. Hurriedly, he continues, "I mean, I don’t mind if we act like a couple."
The annoyance in her gaze gradually faded, hearing Xavier’s seriousness. Why did he suddenly change his mind? She was puzzled.
Iris secretly swallowed hard, trying to moisten her suddenly dry throat, confused with her deep feelings, whether to be happy for young Iris or herself.
"Besides, all of our classmates already know we are dating. So let it be!" Xavier continues, his tone gentle and sincere.
"If it doesn’t bother you," Iris finally expressed what was on her mind right now. "Let’s do it. But, if at any point you think this fake relationship is starting to bother you, please let me know so we can stop it. I think, by then, my grandmother will understand if we break up..." she casually said.
He nodded.
After agreeing to their pretend relationship, Iris remembered something. She tentatively asked Xavier, "Are you sure I can sleep in your house? What about your parents?" She worried that Xavier’s parents might think badly of her.
Xavier didn’t answer her immediately but rubbed his brows as if he was deeply thinking about something. After some time, he said, "Iris, I don’t have parents." He smiled bitterly. "I lost them long ago."
Iris opened her mouth a few times, but no words left her lips. She felt terrible for making him sad.
"Please don’t look at me like that. I’m fine now. It’s been a long time," Xavier said while shaking his head lightly, feeling bad because he had lied to her. "And, looks like you need to know more about your boyfriend, Iris Gray!" He chuckled when he saw her gasp in shock.
Once again, her face bloomed with redness after hearing Xavier address himself as ’Boyfriend’ This was the first time she had ever heard something like that. She felt a foreign feeling welled up inside her.
She turned her gaze away, trying to calm her noisy mind and her trembling heart.
"If necessary, yes. But not now, I guess..." She said without looking at him.
"Deal! You can ask me if you want to know something. You have my phone number, right?"
Iris was stunned. She had never had his number before, as she had only communicated with Justin. She looks at him again while shaking her head.
"Give me your cell phone," he said.
Iris quickly took out her cell phone and handed it to Xavier. She silently watched as he dialed his number and typed something into her phone as if he was also saving his name there.
"Done. Don’t hesitate to call me," Xavier said, returning Iris’ phone. She hastily placed her phone back into her coat pocket.
"Okay, it’s almost past midnight. You better sleep now," Xavier stood up from his seat, "Iris, follow me. I’ll show you the room..." he said and walked towards another door on the floor, across from the medical room.
As she walked after him, she could feel her heart beating faster than usual, and her mind was distracted by something she had never thought about before.
Lost in her deep thoughts, she didn’t know that Xavier was stopped right before the door. Her head hit his firm back, and she couldn’t help but scream, "Ouch!"
This was the second time she really wanted to vanish since she arrived in this place.
’What a shame, Iris Gray!’ she could only scold herself inwardly.
"Sorry, Xavier..." She softly said while rubbing her forehead gently and taking two steps back.
Xavier didn’t say anything. He just silently smiled while opening the door.
"You can use this room," Xavier let Iris enter the room first. After following her inside, he glanced at her, "Iris, I don’t have women’s clothes here, but I have new clothes that I never used before. Wait, let me check..." he said as he walked towards the walk-in closet in the corner.
Iris was utterly speechless when she realized she would sleep in Xavier Darkwood’s bedroom.
As soon as Xavier’s back disappeared from her line of sight, Iris’ knees felt so weak at that moment. She almost fell if she had not held onto the nearest sideboard.
’What the hell, Iris Gray? Stop acting weak!!’ She couldn’t help but scold herself. ’You are a strong and brave woman. How can you be afraid of him? He is just a teen!’ A faint smile graced her face as she tried to calm herself down. Then, she started looking around the room.
Iris could see the simple and minimalistic decor, with a few pieces of furniture and ornaments. But one thing surprised her—the room was too dark, with black shades and dim lights. A black door at the end of the room attracted her. Her feet discreetly stepped towards the door. Just before she wanted to open it, Xavier stopped her.
"Iris, you can’t enter that room!" Xavier said firmly.
