Chapter 32: Stop Confusing Me
Chapter 32: Stop Confusing Me
"I said, I’ll take care of your granddaughter, Ms. Gray. If Iris is still willing to accept me..." Xavier stated, looking directly into Iris’ eyes as if he were now confessing his love to her.
His words nearly caused her to collapse, as her knees felt like jelly. In a flash, she held onto the edge of the bed to steady herself and tried to calm her rapidly beating heart.
"H-Heaven! Xavier, are you serious?" Cassandra’s voice sounded ecstatic on the other end.
"Yes, Ms. Gray. I meant every word," Xavier confirmed.
Cassandra couldn’t help but smile with joy. She was thrilled that her granddaughter’s dream of becoming Xavier’s lover had come true. "My granddaughter would be over the moon if she learned about this. Have you told her? I mean, how do you think she would react?" she asked curiously.
Before Xavier could answer, Iris swiftly grabbed her cell phone from his hand, "Grandma, I’ll call you later. I need to talk to Xavier first!" Iris said while trying to turn off the speakerphone, but it was too late as her grandmother continued her sentence.
"Iris, Grandma is so happy for you. Alright... Alright... I will stop talking now. You talk to Xavier. And you don’t need to come home tonight, you can sleep at Xavier’s place. It’s so late now, and I suddenly feel sleepy." Cassandra said. Her voice was heard clearly by Xavier, standing in a corner looking up at the dark sky outside.
Iris was rendered speechless as she stared at her phone screen, which had turned black after the call was abruptly disconnected.
’I can’t believe Grandma would ask me to sleep over at Xavier’s house,’ she thought to herself as she nervously pocketed her phone and met Xavier’s gaze.
For a few moments, they just stood there, locked in each other’s gaze.
Iris’s mind raced, trying to find the right words to ask him. But she was uncertain about where to start. After a while, she mustered the courage and finally spoke, "What do you mean by saying you’ll accept my feelings?" Her eyes were sharp with intensity, seeking clarity. "Are you truly serious about what you said?"
Xavier didn’t rush to respond. He slowly walked toward Iris, stopping just two steps before her. For some unknown reason, Iris felt her heart pounding faster than before as their eyes met.
Instead of answering her question directly, Xavier asked a question of his own, "How would you feel if I said I meant it?"
Her face bloomed with redness, and she felt her throat go dry. How could she answer that? She wasn’t the same young Iris who had once fallen in love with him; she was someone else now. If she said she felt nothing and didn’t accept his feelings, Xavier would realize she wasn’t the Iris he knew but a different person entirely. Now, she was torn and confused, unsure of how to respond.
"Stop confusing me, Xavier!" Iris’s hands clenched as she tried to hold back her emotions, attempting to clear her mind. "Just answer what I asked," she said, her tone laced with anger.
Xavier chuckled, finding amusement in the sight of the girl before him turning her cheeks red with frustration. "Fine!" he said, relenting. "I said that on purpose so your grandma would stop asking questions and scolding me. Besides, if she keeps doing it, I’ll say you went to X Bar to drink beer. Is that what you want me to say to your dear grandma?"
Iris was rendered speechless, taken aback by his reason. She opened her mouth a few times, wanting to scold him, but all her words seemed to stop on the tip of her tongue.
’Gosh! This man, how dare he lie to Grandma? And how dare he lie about his feelings for me? Now, Grandma already thinks this man really likes me. What am I supposed to do now!’ She vented her anger in her mind while pinching her glabella.
"Iris, can we talk about this later? We have to deal with your wound first!" Xavier’s tone grew concerned as he looked at Iris.
She nodded, realizing that Xavier was right. Dealing with her wound was the priority now. She could feel the soreness and heat emanating from the wound and worry crept in, wondering if the knife that wounded her might have been poisoned. "...Xavier, please help," she said softly.
"You can lie here," he said, pointing to the bed, and then busied himself looking for something from the cupboard at the end of the room.
Iris immediately felt ashamed for having thought so negatively about him earlier. Xavier genuinely brought her here to treat her wound and nothing else. Especially not for any inappropriate reasons as she had feared before.
’Iris Gray, you need to stop your imagination from running wild. Don’t worry, this man will never like you!’ she scolded herself inwardly while lying down on the bed after removing her coat.
Before long, Xavier returned, carrying several familiar medical kits, which made Iris frown. "Xavier, are you going to stitch up my wound?" she asked, a little worried. She had thought this man would call his parents to do it, but it seemed like he intended to do it himself.
Xavier didn’t answer immediately but placed all the equipment on a small table beside the bed. Then he glanced at her and asked, "Do you trust me?"
She could only nod in response. Of course, she had to trust him. There was no other choice, right?
"Good," Xavier said reassuringly. "Yes, I’ll stitch up your wound. Don’t worry. I know well what to do or not to do. And I’ll make sure the stitches don’t leave marks," he added calmly. "...Wait here. I’ll clean my hands first," he said as he walked towards the bathroom without waiting for her response.
As Iris waited for him to return, her heart couldn’t help but race with mixed emotions. She was nervous about the procedure, worried that Xavier couldn’t do it. Still, there was also a strange comfort in knowing that Xavier would help her.
