Chapter 222: Curious To Know The Truth
They didn’t stay long in Justin’s room because Silvana had a ritual to perform.
"Let’s grab breakfast," Xavier held her hand and guided her to the dining table.
When they arrived at the dining room, Iris was surprised to find that Gavriel and Niles were already there. They chatted while Gavriel ate his breakfast and Niles enjoyed his beast’s blood.
"Good morning, Gavriel, Niles..." Iris’s greeting caught them off guard. "I thought you’d vanished as usual, Gavriel," she added, settling down on the opposite side of the table with Xavier.
"Uh, hi... Iris, Lord Xavier..." Gavriel greeted them awkwardly. Being in the same room as Xavier still made him uneasy. "I’m here to check on Justin," he said, not entirely honest with her.
He came because Xavier asked him to. They had a lengthy discussion last night about recent events; Gavriel allowed Xavier to delve into his mind to understand what had occurred. He permitted this to avoid raising suspicion from Xavier.
Iris narrowed her eyes at Gavriel, sensing his unusual demeanor. She was sure he wasn’t being entirely truthful. She wanted to ask him, "Why?" but set the question aside as the maid finally served her breakfast.
...
After breakfast,
Iris and Gavriel strolled by the lake while Xavier went out. She refrained from questioning Xavier’s activities outside. Despite asking him multiple times, he consistently replied, "Taking care of company affairs."
She knew it was a lie; Xavier had no involvement with the Darkwood Group. Killian solely handled the company’s responsibilities.
"You can speak freely now, Gavriel. My husband has already left the house." Iris glanced at him as they walked side by side by the lake.
She noticed him trying to speak several times, but something seemed to hold him back.
Gavriel was taken aback hearing her words. But he remained silent; he believed this wasn’t the right moment to discuss that matter with her.
He took a deep breath. His gaze fixed on the serene lake ahead, avoiding direct eye contact with Iris. Having known her for a few months, he had learned that she wouldn’t relent until she had her answers.
He could only scold her in his mind while trying to think fast. What should he say to her? Because this story might lead her to ask further about the middle realm.
After a while, he finally found another topic she might believe in. He turned to face her.
...
His silence didn’t convince Iris. She sensed he was concealing something from her. Halting her steps, she looked up, meeting his gaze.
"I know you lied to me about why you’re here, Gavriel!" her tone turned cold, a warning demanding an explanation. "Tell me why my husband summoned you to follow us here!?" she pressed for answers.
Gavriel almost choked hearing her question. ’Huh! What a coincidence. I was about to tell her this one...’ He feels amused because he thought she would ask about the witch who spelled Justin.
After deliberately taking a deep sigh, he told her about Xavier, who had grown suspicious of him due to his lack of injuries.
"He was suspicious of you?" Iris was surprised to hear that. A frown appears on her forehead as she ponders about something she forgets about.
Thinking about what happened yesterday, she started to feel her blood running cold. She grabbed Gavriel’s arms before asking, "G-Gavriel, who attacked him? That person must be a powerful witch, right!? And what happened after I touched Justin’s forehead?"
Iris realized she had forgotten to ask Xavier about this the previous night. She was too scared to know the truth about Justin’s condition.
’Fuck! She finally asked!’ Gavriel could only scold himself. He forgot this lady was smart enough to connect the dot.
However, hearing her last question surprised him, "You don’t remember after that?"
"It’s hazy! All I remember is excruciating pain, a strong void trying to invade my mind. I tried to block it out, but the agony was unbearable. After that, I passed out," she explained, recounting the harrowing experience.
"When you fainted, Xavier appeared to help you to ease your pain. Soon after, Lucian also arrived. He’s the one who assisted Justin in checking his condition. Then, we returned to this place..." Gavriel spoke truthfully.
Iris fell silent upon hearing this, her thoughts drifting back to the attack from the previous day as they walked quietly.
After a while, Iris stopped once more and turned to Gavriel. "Do you know who attacked Justin? Why is that person so powerful? You couldn’t even help Justin?"
Gavriel’s face darkened as he heard her question. "Iris, honestly, I don’t know who attacked Justin. However, I suspect that person is a Dark Witch whose power surpasses mine. That time, I couldn’t access Justin’s mind; that person blocked me from doing so. But—" his voice trailed off.
Iris grew impatient when Gavriel fell silent. Again! She feels tired of talking to him.
"Can’t you give me the full picture?" Frustration laced Iris’s tone. "I need to understand what happened, Gavriel... Please, tell me everything you know. Hmm!?"
Gavriel hesitated, but the pleading look in her eyes weakened his resolve. He didn’t have a reason to refuse her.
"I suspect... That person cast the spell for you. That’s why the spell didn’t harm me when I tried to assist Justin. But when you intervened, the spell targeted you, as if it aimed to delve into your mind, your memories."
Iris froze at his words. She had never considered that the spell was actually meant for her. A trap for her. Justin had merely been a vessel for that spell.
"Are you certain about this?" Iris’s voice sounded shaky, revealing her shock at this revelation.
"No, Iris, listen... this is just my suspicion. Please, don’t treat my words as the final truth," Gavriel hurriedly clarified. "It’s best to ask Lord Xavier; he tasked his Twin Guard to investigate that person. I believe... they might already know who cast the spell and why they targeted you and Justin."
Iris could only nod, acknowledging his advice. She needed to discuss this with Xavier.
