Chapter 215: Fourth Task (3)
The night comes faster.
Several minutes passed as Iris and Justin followed Christoffer Lewis’ car ahead. Iris focused on counting the cars guarding Christoffer’s vehicle. After a few moments, a smile appeared in her gaze as she noticed only one car tailing him.
’At least I won’t have to send many souls to the afterlife, or Old White will get annoyed with me for keeping him busy," she thought, amused by the memory of the older man she met the first time she started her reincarnated journey.
"This Christoffer seems confident with his security. He only travels with six people," Justin suddenly said, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, but... even though it’s just six, all of them are Demons, including his driver," Iris responds, glancing at the car a few meters ahead of theirs. They purposely kept a distance, wary that the Devil might detect their presence.
"Does Christoffer know that everyone around him is a Demon?" Justin glanced at Iris, curious for an answer.
"No. He has no idea about the Demons. But he trusts the man seated beside his driver, his personal assistant. He is the leader among—" Iris halted mid-sentence when a familiar voice suddenly echoed from the back seat.
"He’s stronger than the Demoness you eliminated in District Five," Gavriel interjected, appearing unexpectedly in the back row.
His sudden appearance took aback Iris. She turned to look at Gavriel. She could see his casual expression frame his face, cold and distant.
"What the hell, Gavriel? Why did you sneak in like a ghost!? You almost caused us an accident!" Justin snapped, glancing at Gavriel through the rearview mirror.
Gavriel turned to meet Justin’s gaze in the rearview mirror, smirking before saying, "Quit the lies, Justin. You could drive in your sleep, and your car wouldn’t touch a thing."
Justin, "..."
"Why did you come here, man!? Didn’t you say that you wouldn’t assist Iris’s new assignment a few days ago?" Justin questioned, brushing off Gavriel’s earlier statement.
Gavriel spoke slowly but clearly, "I haven’t forgotten. But Iris asked me to join."
’I just texted him about the assignment... Can that be said to be an invitation?’ Iris wondered, feeling perplexed by Gavriel’s words.
Justin was taken aback to learn that Iris had invited Gavriel. He shot Iris a scolding look, silently accusing her of betrayal.
Feeling betrayed, Justin remained silent, focusing once more on the street. He ignored Iris and Gavriel, who were now engrossed in a serious conversation.
But, a second later, he silently sighed when he realized it was not he who ignored them but he who they ignored. He felt hurt.
...
Gavriel shook his head, then swiftly looked at Iris again, knowing she was still confused by his words.
"You said that the Demon is more powerful?" Iris asked Gavriel, wanting to make sure she hadn’t misheard.
"Yep! He’s the only one you need to be wary of because—" Gavriel stopped when he saw Iris raise her hand.
"He has hellfire?" She asked in a hurry.
Gavriel was stunned. His brow slowly knit in surprise at Iris’ knowledge. Did she also know that only a few individuals could produce that type of fire? And only the powerful entity who could share his fire essence with his followers, like the Demon King and Lucian?
Curious to know, he asked her, "How do you know? Did you also know that the fire belongs to—" He stopped, realizing Iris might not know about the Demon King. He decided to withhold information related to the middle realms.
Iris wasn’t suspicious of Gavriel’s sudden silence because, at this moment, she was too excited to tell him about encountering the Demon who could explode himself.
"You know about the incident at Shadow Basecamp, right?" Iris asked. When she saw him nod, she continued, "Back then, I didn’t know that the explosion was triggered by a fire unique to the Demon King. But recently, I learned about it from a book I read," she said casually.
After hearing Iris’s words, Justin and Gavriel were shocked. They hadn’t realized she knew about it. How could this woman have such information?
They were both puzzled.
"Iris, what book are you reading? Why are you reading something like that?" Justin asked, confused. He knew Iris was interested in books related to magic. Still, after hearing what she said now, he realized she had read about dark magic and the Demon King.
Learning this, Justin became deeply worried. Now puzzled, he debated whether to tell Xavier about this or not.
"Why do you guys look so shocked?" Iris frowned, returning their gaze. She was perplexed by their reactions.
Justin and Gavriel were speechless.
"Isn’t that common knowledge?" She asked again when met with silence from both of them as if these two men had lost their ability to respond. They looked at her with their — I’m not telling you, please don’t ask — expression.
Feeling defeated by their silence, Iris finally explained why she was interested in the Demon King — she needed to concoct medicine to heal Eric’s damaged body.
Upon hearing her words, another surprise wave crossed Justin and Gavriel’s faces.
"Are you able to concoct medicine? How could you do that if you don’t have a magic aura?" Justin was curious to ask. "I mean... Even though you have one, your magic aura was common, unlike someone like Silvana."
Iris smiled at Justin. "I know that, but I will not give up just because of that. I would never know the result if I didn’t try it, right? If all the ingredients I need are collected, I will tell you if I fail..." she grinned at him.
Justin, "..."
Gavriel frowned upon hearing her words. "Iris, if you are from the middle realm, I bet you might be successful. But you are only a mere human who received a second chance from God. You will fail, even if you try..." He didn’t want this girl to put her hope too high, afraid she might be deeply hurt if she failed.
