Chapter 201: Thank You, Iris!
Chapter 201: Thank You, Iris!
"I don’t know who’s behind all this. But..." Iris’s voice trailed off, worried about shocking Eric with the news of their Guild’s utter destruction.
After the explosion, Iris learned from the news that around 50 victims were discovered. Some were severely burnt and challenging to identify. All the members seemed to have perished in that place. She didn’t have time to find the others.
Besides not wanting involvement with Shadow, she also aimed to avoid alerting their enemies. These enemies had sent an evil creature to kill her and destroy their Guild. Let their enemies know that all the Shadow Guild members had died there.
"Iris Gray, I’ve known you since you were a child. I can tell if you’re lying," suddenly, Eric’s deep and cold voice echoed in the room, bringing Iris back from her thoughts.
When their eyes met, Eric continued, "Tell me everything, Iris... so I can plan our revenge against whoever tries to harm us!" The determination in his eyes showed his strong feelings toward the person who poisoned him and attempted to kill Iris. He was set on ensuring that person met their end.
Iris was left speechless. How could he confront a Demon and Dark Witch? Even she, now possessing formidable abilities, had almost been killed.
Quietly, Iris took a deep breath before responding to his words, "You still remember? I already said I wouldn’t be involved with Shadow, right!?"
Suddenly, Eric’s shoulders slumped upon hearing her words. She had indeed asked for retirement, and her mission to Switzerland was her final one. But with their enemies openly confronting them, Eric needed Iris’s help. Iris was the only one capable of tracking down their enemy, and if she retired, it would be difficult for him.
"Iris, please help me—"
"Brother, listen to me," Iris interjected before Eric could finish. "Even if I help you... We’ll never succeed. Planning revenge on those people is useless now." She is telling the truth.
How could they fight without other members and resources?
"Iris Gray, I’m disappointed in you!" Eric sharply looked at Iris. "How can you say that we, the Shadow Guild, are that weak!? We haven’t tried, and you already say it’s a failure. How can you become a coward so quickly?"
His voice trembled while speaking those hurtful words. But he couldn’t avoid it anymore. It was the second time he felt disappointed in her because of her sudden change in thoughts and actions.
Eric pushed aside the blanket covering his body, left the bed, and walked towards the window, avoiding eye contact with her. He started to resent her for suddenly seeking retirement, but deep down, he couldn’t stay mad at her for some unknown reason. Each time he was angry at her, he felt his heart ache.
He sighed quietly while blaming himself for directing his anger toward her.
...
Iris’s eyes wavered. Eric gave her the cold shoulder, expressing his anger, and she couldn’t argue with it. He was indeed correct. She was being too cowardly with her words. But she believed that if he knew exactly what happened, Eric would take back his words.
Iris rose from the bed and walked over to him. She stood by his side as they looked out at the beautiful backyard. The sky remained bright, but their expressions were somber like a dark cloud hung over them.
After a brief moment, they fell silent.
Although they didn’t exchange words, Iris sensed what Eric was feeling — regret for raising his voice at her.
Iris smiled inwardly at hearing his thoughts. She found comfort in knowing the sincerity of the man next to her.
She immediately stopped listening to Eric’s thoughts because she once swore she would never listen to the thoughts of those closest to her.
"Brother, I might be a coward, but let me ask you something..." Iris turned to face him. Meeting his gaze, she continued, "What would you do if you discovered that the Shadow Guild was entirely wiped out?"
He furrowed his brow.
Iris pressed on, "There’s no more Shadow Guild. The enemy destroyed the headquarters and killed all the members. I’m unsure if anyone survived, but if they did, they’d likely hide and will never return."
Eric’s legs weakened at the news of his Guild’s destruction. He almost stumbled if Iris hadn’t steadied him by grabbing his arm. He tried to speak but couldn’t form the words.
"Our enemies truly want to eliminate our Guild, brother. They assume we’re already dead. You were believed dead due to the lethal poison, and I was presumed dead on my last assignment..." Iris paused to catch her breath.
Now standing firm, Eric clenched his fists tightly, seething with anger but feeling powerless.
"Brother, the ironic thing is, our enemy doesn’t know that I faked my death to come back and help you. But I’m sorry, brother. I can’t face them alone and rebuild our Guild..." She restrained her anger, recalling the day the imposter Eric nearly killed her and blew himself up to destroy their Guild.
Silence hung heavily in the air after Iris revealed the fate of the Shadow Guild to Eric.
After a while, Eric was the first to break the silence.
Looking at Iris, this time without exasperation but confusion, he asked, "What will you do now?"
"Same as my earlier plan. I’ll stop being an assassin," Iris said, smiling at him before continuing. "I hope you’ll also consider leaving this field, brother. See this incident as a warning. It’s a second chance for you to live as you once wanted, to contribute positively to society..."
Her words struck a chord with Eric. Indeed, becoming a normal person was also his dream. Not as the founder of an Assassin Guild.
He changed because life pushed him that way. The influence of power and money made him forget his dreams, trapping him without a way back.
Eric’s eyes spark with sincerity before saying, "Thank you, Iris. For all your help, saving my life..."
"We’re even, brother. You’ve helped me too. Because of you, I’ve become Iris Gray. I’m not the scared, bullied girl from the orphanage anymore," she said genuinely.
