Chapter 200: Finally, Eric Wakes Up!
Nearing noon, Iris continued reading her book about magic. However, she got distracted when she saw Xavier walk into the room with a big smile on his handsome face.
She was stunned. Seeing him smile like that was rare because this man was very stingy in showing his expressions. After placing her book on the coffee table, she slowly stood and walked to him.
"You seem to be in a good mood, Xavier. Did something good happen?" She stopped right before him while looking up to meet his gaze.
Xavier didn’t answer her question immediately. He placed his hand on her slender waist and drew her into his arms. When their gaze met, he said, "Did my darling forget something?" his smile was still there.
"Forget something?" Iris repeated his words with a faint line that appeared on her forehead, confused. However, her confusion faded when she realized what he meant. He must be talking about Eric.
"D-Did he wake up!?" Iris asked, her voice trembling.
"Yes. Shall we go now?"
She quickly nodded, tightly holding Xavier’s hand and asking him to teleport them to the mansion immediately.
Soon, they arrived at the mansion.
Iris hurried to Eric’s treatment room, with Xavier following behind. However, when she reached the door, she hesitated to go in. She stops for a while, trying to calm her racing heart.
’Iris, you have to be strong!’ Iris reminded herself. ’Don’t let him know what really happened!’ She was worried and feared she might cry if she saw him. If she did, Eric might become suspicious.
Xavier had erased Eric’s memories about the incident related to Demons. Eric will not remember what happened for the past few months when the Demons tortured him. He was also unaware of Iris’s death. Eric only knew that Iris had successfully completed her last assignment and was quitting being an assassin — retiring as planned.
...
When Iris struggled to compose herself, Xavier’s cold hand on her shoulder startled her. Seeing Xavier’s reassuring gaze, she forced a smile.
"Iris, relax. You will be fine..." Xavier turned her to face him. He smiles lovingly at her to offer comfort. "I’ll wait outside. Call me if you need me," he said.
"Hmm, thanks," Iris said. With a deep breath, she opened the door at last.
Inside, Eric sat on the bed, chatting with Doctor Silvana. She didn’t interrupt but stood near the door, watching them.
After a few seconds, Doctor Silvana noticed her presence.
’Lady Iris, you’re finally here,’ Silvana greeted her through her thoughts. She explained to Iris what she had told Eric about his situation.
’Thank you, Doctor Silvana. I really appreciate your help,’ Iris said as she entered the room. She greeted the Doctor briefly.
Later,
After Doctor Silvana left the room, Iris focused on Eric. She observed his confused expression — His eyes seemed to implore her for an explanation.
Not rushing, Iris hesitated to explain because seeing Eric’s pale face and frail body hurt her deeply. Her hand clenched tightly as Eric’s damaged face slowly came to mind. She struggles to shake off the image, but in the end, she succeeds in distracting her mind.
Silvana’s powerful magic shielded her from seeing Eric’s damaged body; she couldn’t see his undead form. If she had seen it, she might have fainted or never successfully forgotten it.
Iris remembered Xavier’s words: only three people could see Eric’s damaged body—himself, Lucian, and Silvana. For that, she felt grateful she couldn’t see it, and she hoped Eric would heal without her having to witness his condition.
Unfortunately, it seemed her hope wouldn’t come true. Silvana said Eric’s healing appeared impossible without a particular dark magic medicine.
This led her to start studying Dark Magic. She hoped to create the medicine for Eric instead of waiting for Silvana.
However, after reading a few books, she realized making the medicine was entirely impossible. Even seeking help from a dark witch wouldn’t work because one of the crucial ingredients—the Demon King’s blood—was unattainable.
Where could they find the Demon King?
Even if she encountered him, asking for his blood would likely result in an unwelcome outcome—perhaps meeting her ancestor.
Iris felt powerless. Each time she dwelled on the issue, only frustration filled her mind.
...
"Br-Brother Eric..." Iris walked over to the bed, flashing a wide smile at him. However, her smile faded into a frown when she saw his expression. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she continued, "Why are you looking at me like that? Aren’t you happy to see me?" She asked, pretending to be saddened.
Eric slowly raised his hand and took hold of Iris’s hand.
His voice trembled as he asked, "What’s happened to me, Iris? Why did I suddenly fall sick and end up staying here for months..." His gaze fixed on Iris, "The doctor said I was poisoned and put into a coma. Is that true? Why did I get such a lethal poison!?" he felt confused.
Iris found his question amusing because that’s only a scenario that Doctor Silavana created.
She could only nod at him and began explaining, "Brother Eric, it’s true... Someone attacked our guild. They poisoned you with a lethal potion, which put you in a coma for months. I was attacked too, but managed to escape death and hide until I could fight back—"
Eric’s expression darkened upon hearing Iris’s explanation.
"When I found you..." She paused, feeling guilty for lying to this kind man, the man she regards as her older brother. "—you were already in a coma. I brought you here. This is my close friend’s mansion. The female Doctor earlier was my friend’s personal Doctor, helping you recover from the potion."
Anger flared in Eric’s eyes as he demanded, "Who did this to us?"
Eric knew their involvement in the underground business meant having numerous enemies. Still, he also knew that very few could rival their strength. He was confident in his guild’s power and had taken precautions to prevent trouble from their enemies.
"I don’t know who’s behind all this. But..." Iris’s voice trailed off, worried about shocking Eric with the news of their guild’s utter destruction.
