Chapter 198: Do I Have A Chance?
Chapter 198: Do I Have A Chance?
After Lucian left, Xavier busied himself making dinner.
Iris told him that she didn’t want to eat because she planned to start a diet, thinking Xavier was intentionally overfeeding her.
But Xavier persisted, cooking dinner anyway.
Unable to stop him, Iris decided to delve back into her book, lying on the sofa in the living room.
Iris was so absorbed in reading the book. She didn’t notice when Xavier finished cooking. Xavier called her several times to eat, but she was too engrossed to hear.
Xavier smiled, observed her, and then approached. Before he caught her attention, he saw the book she was reading, which surprised him — it was about dark magic.
He was shocked that such a book was in his collection. He composed himself and moved closer to her.
"Darling, do you think the book you read is more attractive than me!?" Xavier’s voice, near Iris’ ear, startled her.
She quickly closed the book and looked at Xavier, surprised to see him so close.
"Hi! Xavier?... No, of course not," she said with a grin.
"Darling, glad to know I’m more interesting than your book," Xavier said casually, extending his hand to help her stand. "Come, your dinner is ready..."
Iris smiled and followed him to the dining table, relieved to find only a salad and grilled chicken breast. As usual, she was the only one eating while Xavier sat with her, enjoying his drink.
Dinner went quickly because Xavier was more engrossed in thinking about the book Iris was reading than chatting with her.
...
After dinner, they moved to the veranda in their bedroom to enjoy the beauty of Orion City at night.
However, after a few minutes of sitting there, Xavier couldn’t resist asking about the book she was reading.
He was curious to know why she was interested in learning about dark magic. Countless questions now swirled in his mind: Did her curiosity relate to her past in the middle realm? Did she remember her past life?
Xavier glanced at her and wanted to ask. But, he was surprised to see her gazing at the distant moon, not the city lights. From her expression, he could sense that something was bothering her.
Before he questioned her, Xavier took her hand, surprising her. His cold finger ran through her palm, making her tickle, but she didn’t stop him. She enjoys his touching.
When their eyes met, he said, "You seem to be thinking about something. Would you mind sharing it with me? I’m a little bored here, only watching my beautiful wife ignore me." He smiled at her.
Iris "..."
"Xavier, how are things in the middle realm? Is it similar to here?"
Her question surprised Xavier. "You know about that?"
"Yeah, today I learned from Gavriel. He told me about three realms. And he also mentioned that you all come from that place..." A strange feeling arose in her heart when she said that. She felt different because she was the only one from this place.
Xavier silently cursed Gavriel for discussing it with her about this one. However, his anger lessened when he realized something: Did Iris remember her life in the Middle Realm?
"So, is that place also as beautiful as this one?" Iris asked again after looking at his expression; he only stared at her without saying anything.
Even though Gavriel hadn’t confirmed Xavier came from that place, looking at his expression now, it made her start to believe he also came from the Middle Realm.
Xavier ignored her question, his mind distracted, realizing Iris may remember about her past life. It made him curious to know.
"Iris, did you perhaps come from that place? Is that why you are interested in knowing about it!?"
Upon hearing Xavier’s words, a faint smile appeared at the corner of her lips. If only she came from that place, it would be perfect because she no longer felt like an outcast, saddened by being the only person from this mortal realm.
"Oh please, how could I come from that place if I know nothing!?" Iris grinned before continuing, "Well, I wish I came from the Middle Realm. It would be awesome if I were also immortal like you—" she almost choked, saying those words.
Her expression gradually changed from a playful to a gloomy one. She turned her gaze to the distance to avoid his gaze, afraid he would notice her sadness at the thought of aging and eventually dying. While Xavier? He would stay unchanged and live forever.
The thought of them parting one day made her heart ache, feeling like someone had sliced it and rubbed it with lemon. It hurt even more because she didn’t know what to say to Xavier right now.
This was the first time this reality hit her like a wake-up call that her relationship with Xavier might not last.
She could only let out a deep sigh.
...
Iris’s attempts to hide her sadness were in vain because Xavier had already noticed it. He even knew what she was trying to say.
Xavier leaned closer and whispered near her ear, "Darling, look at me..."
His voice surprised Iris. She turned around and was shocked when their lips touched. Without a chance to pull away, Xavier’s hand held hers gently, and his cold lips met her warm lips, kissing her deeply. After a few seconds, Xavier slowly broke the kiss when Iris needed air to breathe.
As their lips parted, he said in a voice that sounded like a beautiful melody in her ear, "You will become immortal just like me, Ms. Darkwood. We will live forever, so don’t ever think you will leave me..."
Iris was surprised to hear his words. She knew Xavier was only trying to comfort her. However, after seeing his severe and intense gaze, her heart started to beat faster, thrilled with what she thought.
"Do I have a chance of becoming immortal?"
"Yes," he said firmly.
She swallowed slowly as her inner thoughts emerged. Something that often came up when they first started their relationship.
