Chapter 191: He Won’t Heal As Usual
’Are my parents witches? Is that why they abandoned me in an orphanage?’ Iris suddenly felt chills at the thought. She pushed the thought away. It doesn’t make sense if her parents were a witch.
Then, something crossed her mind. She looked at him before asking, "Xavier, how about my god eyes? All this time, I could only use that power when I got my task. Can I also use that power anytime I want? I hope I can..."
Xavier fell silent for a moment. He mulled over the right words to answer her, confused about why Lucian had forbidden her from using her abilities to hear and see sharply. Iris should be able to use those abilities at will; she shouldn’t have to wait for a specific assignment.
He glanced at her before responding, "You can try to learn how to awaken it through your mind." He paused when he noticed her frown, indicating her disbelief in what he said.
"Darling, what I mean is, try using that ability naturally; you don’t have to wait for your task or activate it through your invisible phone," he explained.
Iris slowly shook her head, not entirely in agreement with his suggestion. "I tried it. But I failed. So, it must be activated through my invisible cell phone, and I can only use it during my task."
Xavier pondered once again. "Are you certain you tried but failed?" he asked.
"Hmm, I attempted it a few times when we were in Silenthill," Iris said with a faint smile, recalling her unsuccessful attempts.
She vividly remembered the times she had tried but failed, even though the mental strain caused her distress. That’s why she felt slightly puzzled when Xavier mentioned her talent for casting magic solely using her mind.
"Ugh, let’s just forget about it... I’ll wait. I hope Lucian will grant me that ability after I finish my next task," she expressed, her eyes lighting up as she thought about the next task.
However, the glimmer in her eyes gradually dimmed as she realized it had been almost a week without any task from Lucian. Neither had Gavriel made contact. It felt like they had vanished after completing her third task.
’Did Xavier intervene to prevent them from contacting me?’ she wondered, aware of this man’s slight possessiveness.
"Xavier, are Lucian and Gavriel busy? Why haven’t they contacted me again?" She voiced her concern while looking into his eyes.
Xavier took a deep sigh, silently recalling Lucian. The Old Geezer even avoided him.
Whenever he requested a meeting, Lucian would cite important, unstoppable tasks as excuses. Until now, he hadn’t been able to meet him despite numerous inquiries, especially regarding his conversation with Silvana about the woman resembling Iris from the middle realm.
"I know Lucian is busy, but as for Gavriel, I’ve never contacted him, so I don’t know about him," Xavier responded.
Iris slightly nodded, acknowledging that Lucian was indeed a busy person. "My boss Lucian, he’s genuinely busy. But I can’t say I like him. He isn’t a kind boss..."
Xavier’s expression darkened upon hearing her words. "Has he ever mistreated you?"
"No," she shook her head hastily, continuing, "Lucian never mistreated me. But he never responded to my messages if they were unrelated to my task. He’s not very approachable..."
Xavier’s face gradually returned to a calm expression, though inwardly, he chuckled. Indeed, Lucian was that kind of person, cold toward everyone.
However, only Xavier knew why Lucian seldom conversed with Iris or replied to her texts—it was because he warned Lucian not to engage too much with her. He feared Lucian might develop feelings for his wife.
"Well, it looks like I should contact Gavriel to ask him about it..." Iris murmured faintly—however, Xavier’s dark expression returned.
Quickly, he interjected, "Darling, no need to contact Gavriel. I’ll reach out to him and ask him to come to the mansion." They planned to go to the mansion daily, as Iris wanted to stay there until Eric woke up.
Iris couldn’t help but inwardly laugh when she noticed Xavier’s hint of jealousy. Still, her laughter slowly faded as she recalled Eric’s healing progress.
"Xavier, please tell me about Eric’s healing progress... Will his wounds return to normal?" Iris asked, eager to learn what Xavier had discussed with Doctor Silvana.
Since last night, Iris had wanted to ask Xavier, but he seemed to avoid the topic. She didn’t know his reasons.
...
Xavier met Iris’s calmer gaze, deciding it was time to disclose the conversation’s results with Silvana. He had hesitated to reveal it earlier, fearing it would devastate Iris.
"He won’t heal as usual. The Demon used something that prevented his flesh from regenerating," Xavier finally disclosed the truth.
Iris’ shoulders slumped even further. Her hands clenched tightly, containing a blend of emotions: fear, sadness, and anger upon hearing Xavier’s explanation.
"But you don’t need to worry. Silvana has crafted potent magic to conceal his wounds from others’ sight, including yours. For Eric himself, everything will seem normal. However, individuals with magical abilities surpassing Silvana will see his true form."
Silence lingered as Iris struggled to find the right words. She was at a loss.
Would she feel relief if Eric and others saw his body as usual? Or despair because he would live like that indefinitely, resembling a living corpse.
"Will he feel any pain?" She asked.
"Of course not. He will believe he’s fine. But..." Xavier’s voice trailed off, recollecting Silvana’s warnings about potential side effects for Eric.
"But what?" Iris asked, filled with concern.
"He might end up going insane or worse, take his own life... If, one day, he discovers his true form," Xavier responded, laden with concern.
Iris took another deep breath. She understands the significance behind Xavier’s words. She, too, might lose her sanity upon seeing Eric’s body. Until now, she had not been able to gather the courage to look at Eric from the neck down, afraid she would be reminded of his fleshless body forever.
