Chapter 164: The Third Task (2)

Chapter 164: The Third Task (2)

The atmosphere in the car returned to silence. No one speaks. They are both lost in their thoughts.

However, Iris suddenly felt a sharp impact in her head as they crossed a particular location. She winced in pain while holding her head tightly, trying to suppress the nameless pain in her head. It felt like her head was going to explode.

"Iris!? What happened?" Xavier’s voice trembled with panic as he reached out to touch her head.

Iris flinched, and the pain became even more intense.

"T-This hurts so much. Why? Why—"

She struggled against the pain, but a second later, her eyes blinked rapidly in a whirlwind of images that raced like a fast-forwarded video clip. Everything transpired so swiftly that her entire body tensed within moments.

Then, darkness engulfed her, and she fainted.

When Iris woke up, she first saw Xavier’s worried face. He sat on the edge of the bed while holding her hand.

"You’re finally awake, Iris," Xavier’s voice trembled with agitation, causing Iris to become even more confused.

"What happened?" Iris asked, bewildered. She scanned her surroundings, surprised to find herself in a spacious, luxurious bedroom.

What astounded her even more was the presence of several individuals in the room, all wearing the same concerned expression as Xavier.

Iris turned her gaze back to Xavier.

"Xavier, why am I here? Weren’t we in the car just a moment ago?" She asked, her voice filled with confusion.

"You didn’t recall anything!?" Xavier asked, his voice filled with apparent confusion.

Iris responded with a playful tone, "Huh!? Did I forget something?" She frowned before continuing. "What happened to me? Can you tell me? Did something cause me to faint?" Iris asked cheerfully.

However, her cheerful expression gradually changed as she noticed Xavier’s face remained unchanged. There’s a mixture of worry and confusion through his gaze.

"So, is it true... Someone knocked me out?" Iris started to feel worried.

She immediately checked her body and head hastily but found no external scars. Her body was fine, and she was still wearing the same clothes she had on when she left the house. Only her shoes were no longer visible.

Xavier didn’t rush to answer Iris’s question. Instead, he turned to look behind, near the door frame.

’Lucian, could you explain the strange circumstances that have occurred? A few hours ago, Iris was overcome with pain. However, now she doesn’t seem to remember what happened to herself...’ Xavier asked through his mind, his gaze unwavering as he met Lucian’s gaze.

Lucian pondered the matter for a moment.

’If my assumption is correct, this matter is related to Iris’ memories. It stands to reason that parts of her previous life have been revived, unknowingly awakening her distress. As a result, she is in the throes of agony because—’ Lucian’s voice trailed off as his eyes now met Iris’s shocking gaze.

...

Iris found herself bewildered as Xavier seemed to be ignoring her. She traced his gaze toward the door, and what she saw sent shockwaves through her. A man stood there, casually leaning against the door frame—a figure she had frequently seen on her invisible phone but had never met in person.

’Lucian? Why is he here?’ Iris silently questioned herself. Yet, a chilling realization seized her. ’If Lucian was in this room, I must have encountered something, prompting Xavier to summon him in person.’

Reacting swiftly, Iris seized Xavier’s hand, diverting his attention towards her.

When their eyes locked, she mentally asked him, ’Xavier, please explain what’s happening!’ Anxiety overtook her as she considered the possibility of being attacked during their car ride, leading to her memory lapse.

Xavier motioned for everyone in the room to leave.

As the last person excited, Xavier shifted his attention back to Iris. He offered a gentle, reassuring smile to ease the confusion and worry on her face.

Iris’s expression, now, was a stark contrast to the turmoil he had experienced just a few hours earlier when he had been unable to help ease her pain.

What frightened him even more was the uncertainty surrounding the cause of her pain. At that time, he felt the situation was entirely unfamiliar to him. Afraid something might happen to Iris, he urgently summoned Lucian to examine Iris’s condition.

"Iris, you can’t remember anything at all?" Xavier asked once more. "Can you try to recall? There might be something hidden in your memories..."

Iris complied with Xavier’s request, making an effort to recollect the events that had happened in the car earlier. Yet, regardless of her struggle, the memory remained the same, shrouded in darkness.

She shook her head slowly and spoke, "I’m sorry, I can’t recall anything."

Xavier comforted her, "It’s alright, Iris..." He began to recount her experience in the car.

...

Iris was shocked.

"I’m in pain? I don’t feel any pain at all. Someone attacks me?" She asked in confusion.

Xavier responded swiftly, "Impossible. No one could have harmed you while I was with you, Iris. It’s simply not possible. If someone had attacked you, I would have detected it immediately."

Iris nodded slightly, fully aware of Xavier’s formidable abilities.

"Then what is happening to me? Is this a sign that my memories are vanishing once more? I mean, almost half of my memories from my previous life have already disappeared. And now, the remaining memories are beginning to fade as well!?" Iris expressed her frustration.

Xavier fell into a momentary silence, remembering Lucian’s earlier words. He gently grasped her hand, placing it in his lap, and gazed into her clear blue eyes.

"Iris, don’t worry. Your remaining memories haven’t faded. However, while we were in the car, you may have seen something on the road that triggered a memory from your previous life—a memory you had lost."

Iris felt her heart sink hearing his explanation. "A-Are you certain?"

Xavier replied, "I can only speculate. I cannot be entirely certain, but it’s the most plausible explanation I can offer now."

After a few minutes of thought, something suddenly crossed her mind.

"Xavier, you might be right..."
