Chapter 163: The Third Task (1)

As the night progressed, Xavier approached Iris, who was engrossed in reading something on her laptop while seated on the couch.

"Iris, have you finished your preparations?" Xavier’s voice made Iris stop reading the target data report.

She glanced at Xavier, who leaned against the door frame, looking dashing in his dark-colored outfit. "Yes," she replied, closing her laptop. After stowing it in her space ring, she joined him. "Are we leaving now?"

"If you’ve completed all your preparations, it’s time to go. This is a perfect moment to monitor your target. According to Justin, he’s at a nightclub," Xavier explained.

He had already sent Justin there, and Gavriel had also arrived in District Five.

"Alright, I’m ready. Everything I need is in my space ring..." Iris paused, recalling she needed new shoes. "Xavier, I just need my shoes. Please give me a moment." She headed towards her walk-in closet.

"Take your time, darling. I’ll wait for you downstairs."

"Okay," Iris called out from inside the walk-in closet.

She felt overwhelmed looking at the many combat boots provided by Xavier. It was as if he had known of her tastes; all the shoes were the same as the ones she usually wore in her previous life.

After a while, she located a pair of shoes she decided to use and stored a few in her space ring, just in case she might need them.

Iris entered the living room and noticed Xavier by the window, his gaze fixed on the dark backyard. He appeared lost in thought, seemingly unaware of her presence. This was quite unusual for the usually vigilant Xavier.

She softly uttered his name, but he didn’t react until she spoke a bit louder. She approached him and asked, "Xavier, I’m ready." When he turned to see her, she couldn’t help but smile. "Is something on your mind?"

He replied, "No, I was just lost in thought. Let’s go." Extending his hand towards Iris, he invited her to join him.

Iris promptly took his hand, and the instant their fingers connected, they vanished from the room and reappeared in a dimly lit location.

It resembled a hilltop park’s parking lot, adorned with a sprinkling of garden lights. The atmosphere was calm, and she felt it was just the two in that place.

"Are we in District Five?" she asked, puzzled.

Though Iris had experienced teleportation with Xavier before, she remained in awe of his ability to transport her to different districts effortlessly. The lack of dizziness or nausea still amazed her; one moment, she blinked, and the next, they were in a new place.

Xavier confirmed, "Yes, we’re in District Five. Follow me." He gestured toward a black SUV parked not far from them.

Curious, Iris asked, "Where exactly are we?"

As she surveyed her surroundings, she noticed they were on a hill. In the distance, she could see the lights from the streets and buildings, creating a breathtaking view of the city below.

Xavier explained, "This is my resort park." He pointed to a building on higher ground nearby. "I had someone leave my car here so I can drive you around the town."

Iris’s excitement flashes through her gaze, hearing they will drive to the city. Since leaving Silenthill, this marked the first time they would go out. Until now, they had stayed at his house and not ventured into the city.

"So, are we spending the night at the resort?" she asked, settling into the car and giving Xavier a hopeful smile.

"You decide," he replied as he started the engine. "We can stay here or head to my penthouse in the city."

Grinning, Iris said, "It might be fun to stay in the city. We’re used to living in a quiet place, so a night in a lively environment could be quite enjoyable, don’t you think?"

Xavier glanced at her and brushed his hand through her hair. "I’ll go wherever my lady desires..."

Suppressing a chuckle at his cheesy words, Iris turned her gaze to the window, observing the bustling street.

Iris couldn’t help but express her amazement, "It’s almost ten, and there are so many people and cars on the streets!"

She could see numerous open restaurants, shops, and people strolling along the sidewalks.

Xavier explained, "This is a major town in this district; it’s always bustling. And don’t forget, it’s a Friday night, making the evenings livelier."

Iris chuckled. "I’ve lost track of the days since I no longer have a routine like going to college."

Xavier smiled, "Do you want to register again? I can arrange for you to enter a university in Willow Town?"

Iris immediately looked at Xavier with a shocked look.

"NO! Please don’t. I don’t want to experience going to campus again and having to meet lots of people. Enough drama with Ruby Winters..." She said while shaking her head.

Just thinking about her experience last year, studying for several months at Silenthill University, gave her a headache.

She didn’t want to discuss it, so she changed the subject, "Where is Justin?"

"He is tailing your target. We will head there later..." Xavier explained. "But, Iris... I can’t get involved with your task. So, I will drop you off to meet Justin and Gavriel there."

Iris already knew that. But she was still curious why Xavier didn’t want to get involved with her task.

"Xavier, may I ask?

"Sure," He said.

"Why do you always say you can’t be involved in my assignment? Even though it would be more fun if you were there rather than Justin."

"That’s because I promised someone not to get involved," He smiled gently at her. But inside, he also feels annoyed because Lucian forced him to promise. And he couldn’t ignore that because Lucian had kept his promise by giving Iris power.

"Who? Lucian?" Iris asked curiously.

"Yes. That old geezer was annoying. But, because the promise between us is binding, I can’t—" His voice fades, unable to continue his words.

"It’s okay, Xavier. I understand." Iris smiled at him. "Justin and Gavriel are enough. And, with my current power, I can complete this task."
