Chapter 165: The Third Task (3)
After a few minutes of thought, something suddenly crossed her mind.
"Xavier, you might be right..."
"What?" Xavier was taken aback, his gaze fixed on her as her expression gradually shifted from worry to calmer, as if she had finally remembered something. "You remember what caused you such pain?"
Iris didn’t immediately respond. Instead, she took a moment to reflect, attempting to piece together every detail in her mind, particularly those associated with her previous tasks.
"I mean... You’re right, and my earlier pain is connected to my past," she said, offering a slight smile before continuing, "Perhaps you haven’t noticed. All my assignment targets are somehow connected with my own life."
She continued, "My first target was Professor Alberto West, and my second target had ties to Ruby Winters. So, if you claim that my earlier pain is linked to my memories, I believe you..." Her body seemed to shiver as she imagined something disturbing.
"And I’m sure," Her voice slightly shook as she hesitated, taking a deep breath before continuing, "...this third task likely relates to memories from a previous life."
Xavier was surprised to realize that Iris’ target had a relationship with her. He got up and walked to the window while Iris watched him in confusion but remained quiet.
A desire to seek confirmation appears within him, and with his divine eyes, Xavier seeks out Lucian. There, he found Lucian comfortably, perched on the roof, enjoying the nighttime view as the approaching dawn soon replaced it.
’Did you have a hand in selecting her targets?’ Xavier inquired, though he already possessed this knowledge. For some mysterious reason, he sought the answer directly from Lucian.
’You possess the answer and yet inquire of me? Oh, my dear friend Xavier, it appears that your once-sharp intellect has dulled since you fell in love with that little human," Lucian responded with a chuckle.
’So, it is true. He was responsible,’ Xavier murmured, his hands tightening slightly. ’Where can He be found now?’
Lucian’s laughter persisted at Xavier’s expletive-laden reaction. ’Hahaha... Xavier, my friend, your thoughts—’
However, Lucian’s laughter ceased abruptly, replaced by unease, as he listened to Xavier’s ominous words.
’It seems I have no choice but to draw His attention to this place. Very well, I shall make havoc in this lovely Earth—’
’STOP! FINE!’ Lucian abruptly vanished from the rooftop, reappearing in Iris’s bedroom, concealed by invisibility from everyone except Xavier, who could still perceive him. Iris remained oblivious to his presence.
Lucian regarded Xavier with a narrowed gaze. ’Your wits seem to have suffered more than just a decline. I will try to locate Him on your behalf and address your concerns. However," he added as he approached the window, ’I shall do so only after she completes her task.’
’Agreed,’ Xavier replied with a wry smile, watching Lucian vanish from the room. ’What an annoying old geezer...’ he muttered before returning his attention to Iris.
Xavier was taken aback to find Iris staring at him intensely. Before he could respond, he observed her opening her mouth.
"Have you spoken to Lucian?" Iris asked with curiosity. She was sure that Xavier wouldn’t simply wander off in a daze without communication with someone. Lucian was the only person capable of momentarily diverting Xavier’s attention from her.
"You can see him?" Xavier queried as he approached her and took a seat on the edge of the bed beside her, offering a gentle smile.
She shook her head.
"I can’t see him, but I’m guessing. Am I correct?"
Xavier maintained his smile while running his hand through his smooth, light brown hair. However, his expression gradually shifted to curiosity a moment later when he noticed her hair color.
"Iris, what was your hair’s original color?" Xavier asked, pausing his playful hair-tousling and locking eyes with her.
"This little Iris’s hair color is the same as what you see now, light brown. I know she never dyed her hair from her memories, but she often used a wig..." Iris’s voice trailed off when Xavier interjected.
"No, what I mean is your previous life... your hair color from before." Xavier recollected that this girl had mentioned the difference between her current body and her previous life was the color and style of their hair.
"Ash-gray. Why are you suddenly asking about that?" Iris narrowed her eyes, suspecting that Xavier was attempting to divert the conversation when she was eager to discuss Lucian.
"Because some of your hair has now turned ash-gray..." Xavier spoke softly, but his words were enough to leave Iris in shock.
Suddenly, Iris rose from the bed and headed for the bathroom to inspect her reflection in the mirror. Xavier promptly followed and stood by her side, observing her astonishment as she examined the gradual shift in her hair’s color to ash-gray.
"Why is my natural hair color beginning to change?" Iris inquired without making eye contact with Xavier, shocked by the transformation on some of her hair strands.
Xavier wanted to respond, but he was utterly perplexed.
Iris continued, briefly glancing at Xavier, who remained silent and fixated on her. She turned to face him. "Xavier, this is intriguing. Have I completely reclaimed my former self in this body?" she asked.
"Maybe," Xavier replied calmly. His fear of saying the wrong thing grew as he struggled to understand this girl and her mysteries.
Somehow, he couldn’t shake the feeling that God had sent Iris to disrupt his life. He yearned to meet the Almighty and ask Him what His intentions were. Why had He suddenly chosen to reach out after everything that had happened in the past?
Xavier was left perplexed.
...
"OH-MY-GOD!" Iris cried out.
Iris’s scream jolted Xavier, and he instinctively grabbed her arm, his brow furrowing. "Iris, what’s wrong? Are you hurt again?" he inquired with genuine concern.
"No, I’m fine... But... could this be a sign that memories from my past will soon resurface?" Iris exclaimed. His panicked expression gradually turned into joy. Her eyes sparkled with newfound hope, and her smile widened.
