Chapter 161: Become Iris’ Guard
Chapter 161: Become Iris’ Guard
Justin looked at Xavier, hoping to get an explanation from him, but he was confused when he found Xavier looking calm and not worried when he heard that Iris might be a witch.
This left Justin deeply perplexed.
Justin struggled to find the words, attempting to ask a question that seemed to evade his lips, fearing it might anger Xavier.
He then turned his gaze towards Iris, but before he could voice his curiosity, Xavier interrupted, "My lady is not as you imagine, yet she is no ordinary human."
Xavier’s ambiguous response only deepened Justin’s confusion—a faint frown formed on his forehead. "My lord, can you provide more information?" he inquired, alternating his gaze between the two of them.
Xavier didn’t respond to Justin immediately. Instead, he turned towards Iris, silently seeking her opinion. Should they reveal the truth to Justin or not?
Iris nodded slowly in agreement. But before Xavier could say anything, she placed her hand on his to stop him and said, "Xavier, let me explain to him..."
"Hmm, of course," Xavier replied with a gentle smile, running his fingers through her silky hair. He then turned his gaze towards the window, peering at the garden. Xavier remained silent, allowing Iris to clarify her identity to Justin.
...
After Iris explained to Justin, the room fell into an eerie silence.
Iris could only smile as she observed Justin, who appeared bewildered and stunned as if his mind were gradually processing all the information she shared.
She shifted her gaze to Xavier and leaned against his shoulder, following his line of sight to the distant scenery.
However, the silence didn’t last for long. Justin’s voice finally broke through the silence.
"This is the first time I’ve encountered someone like you, Iris," Justin remarked, his voice still hinting at disbelief. "In all my years in this vast land, you’re the first person I’ve met who’s undergone transmigration after being killed in a past life."
Iris could only respond with a faint smile. At one point, she wouldn’t have believed such a story herself, but her firsthand experience had convinced her.
Just a few months ago, she was transmigrated into the body of a young girl and experienced a series of confusing events. It made her feel like she had landed in another world, far from Earth, the life she once lived.
Iris had hoped that Justin would accept her as the new Iris and cease his inquiries, but her expectations were dashed. Justin, in his persistent curiosity, began asking again.
"Iris, something is still bothering me. If you’ve transmigrated into this young Iris’s body, how do you possess powers like ours? How can you teleport? And—" Justin hesitated momentarily, refraining from mentioning that his Lord couldn’t read her mind.
Iris smiled before responding, "Do you believe... If I were to say, is it because God favors me?" She offered this vague reply, concealing her identity as a God Helper.
It wasn’t the right time for him to learn the truth, as she worried Justin might struggle to handle such information.
Justin rolled his eyes upon hearing her response.
"Damn, Iris—" Before he could finish his sentence, he suddenly felt the intense weight of Xavier’s piercing gaze, as if it could bore holes through him. He awkwardly swallowed and let out a forced chuckle.
"Hahaha... Iris, I believe you," Justin said, even though doubt lingered in his mind.
...
"Iris, earlier, you mentioned wanting to talk to me?" Xavier suddenly inquired.
This prompted Iris to recall her new assignment, but hesitated to bring it up since Justin was still present.
"What’s on your mind? Is something troubling you?" Xavier asked again when he noticed the urgency in her gaze, even though she hadn’t spoken a word.
Iris met his eyes and communicated through their mental connection, ’It’s about my new assignment. I’ve finally accepted a task from Lucian—’
Xavier smiled as he gazed at Iris, sensing her worry. He answers her, ’Iris, soon, Justin will learn about your role as an assassin and your identity as the God Helpers. There’s no need to keep anything from him...’
Iris’s eyes widened slightly at Xavier’s words, although doubt lingered in her mind.
’Furthermore, I intend to appoint him as your protector from this point forward. I can’t trust Gavriel to safeguard you alone, Iris. That man is rather weak...’ Xavier remarked, shaking his head disappointedly.
Iris swallowed upon hearing his words. All this time, she had believed that Gavriel was very strong, not much different from Xavier. But Xavier’s comments indicated that Gavriel’s strength was on par with Justin’s, and perhaps Justin was even slightly more potent than Gavriel.
This fact arouses Iris’ curiosity about Xavier’s true powers. How strong is he?
’Xavier, is it essential for Justin to be my protector? I believe Gavriel and I can manage my assignments just fine,’ Iris will feel uncomfortable with Justin shadowing her, especially during missions with Gavriel.
Hearing Iris’s words, Xavier began to doubt Gavriel’s ability to mentor Iris.
’Iris, did Lucian or Gavriel inform you that your target will become stronger?’ He questioned. ’Or did they mention that Gavriel won’t be your mentor indefinitely? He might guide you through a few more tasks and then move on to train another recruit.’
Iris was taken aback by his words. She had heard about this, but it had somehow slipped her mind.
She nodded in acknowledgment before adding, ’Well, I know that. But, I worry that Justin is probably quite occupied with his responsibilities here...’
Xavier chuckled and turned toward Justin, who appeared lost in thought, staring at them.
"This man," Xavier said aloud, raising his voice to ensure Justin could hear. "Seems to have no occupation other than gaming!"
Justin, observing Iris and Xavier since the start, could sense they were conversing through their thoughts. He was curious about the topic of their discussion, and his curiosity was quickly addressed when he overheard Xavier’s words.
’So, they’re talking about me?’ Justin thought inwardly, attempting to offer them a smile.
"M-Milord, what are you suggesting?" Justin inquired.
"Justin, henceforth, you shall be responsible for guarding and protecting my beloved Lady..." Xavier stated casually, but his words were enough to make Iris’s heart shake and nearly sink into the depths of his captivating charm. Again!
