Rebirth as The Vampire Lord's Wife -
Chapter 157: New Life Direction
Chapter 157: New Life Direction
A week later.
Today is Iris’s last day living in this town.
Even though she only lived here briefly, she made many unforgettable memories. She felt happy for the first time since her rebirth because she no longer had to be on high alert all day, worrying if her enemies would come after her to take her life.
And, of course, it was in this small town that she experienced the warmth of a family—something she had never felt in her previous life.
She met Grandma Gray, Maya, and Kevin. Their brief presence in her life was impossible for her to forget. She would cherish these memories.
A few days ago, she felt blessed because Xavier brought her to a beautiful small village in Switzerland to visit Grandma Gray and Grand Uncle Finley.
Even though she couldn’t chat with them anymore, she could see that Grandma Gray and Grand Uncle Finley were living happily and enjoying their time together in the village.
Iris knew that Grandma Gray was okay. It calmed her mind a lot because Cassandra was this young Iris’s grandma. She had already promised this girl to take care of her grandma.
She felt blessed because Xavier told her he would assign someone to look after them in that village and notify her if something happened to them.
...
Now they are in the car, heading to Gray Cafe for the last time, which was her wish. She wanted to have a coffee there before leaving this little town, Silenthill.
She might never return to this place again.
"Are you ready, Iris?" Xavier asked. He was amused when he saw Iris looking worried as she gazed out of the car toward the cafe.
She turned to him, her worried expression evident in her eyes. "They won’t recognize me, right?"
"Hmm, don’t worry. No one will recognize you," Xavier calmly assured her.
Iris nodded slightly, but her worry still lingered in her gaze.
He gently touched her cheek before calmly saying, "Did you forget I gave you this necklace?" He held Iris’s small round pendant with a crimson-colored stone.
He added, "This pendant will protect you from people who have seen you before. They won’t remember you. It also shields you from young vampires who can easily detect your alluring blood fragrance, which can drive them crazy..."
Iris felt her body flinch slightly upon hearing Xavier’s last sentence. She vividly remembered when Xavier explained why young vampires found her blood fragrance so enticing, which was why the young female vampire had sought to capture her.
Iris felt much calmer upon hearing Xavier’s explanation again.
They all immediately got out of the car, including Niles and Justin, who had been sitting in the front row.
"You guys, go ahead and find a seat. I’ll place the order," Justin said as he walked toward the cashier’s desk.
Iris and the others looked for a spot near the large glass window, providing a clear view of the cashier area.
She sat beside Xavier, who appeared unconcerned with his surroundings. That afternoon, the cafe didn’t seem very busy.
Iris felt strange because this was her first time sitting as a café customer in this place. Usually, she stood behind the cashier’s desk, greeting the customers.
Her eyes frequently glanced at Maya, who seemed busy taking orders. When Kevin emerged from the kitchen to converse with Maya, she felt calmer, entrusting the café to them.
Even though Grandma Gray was still listed as the owner of the café, Maya and Kevin were the ones who would be taking care of the place. She believed this place would thrive as long as they were happy with their work.
’Don’t worry about them, I’ve already arranged for them to become a couple soon...’ Xavier’s voice sounded in Iris’s mind, startling her.
Iris immediately looked at him and asked, ’Y-You can arrange their fate? How?’ She spoke to him using her thoughts. Lately, they have been communicating like this in public spaces.
Xavier didn’t answer her but averted his gaze to avoid Iris’s eyes.
’Xavier, tell me... what exactly is your role?’ She pressed curiously. The fact that Xavier knew Lucian and Gavriel made her believe he was also affiliated with GH. However, whenever she asked him, he remained silent and never satisfied her curiosity.
She placed her hand on his arm, making him look at her.
’Fine! If you don’t want to tell me, I’ll ask Lucian!’ Iris said with a slightly threatening tone, narrowing her eyes at him.
Xavier felt amused looking at this determined girl uttering those words. He wanted to tell her that Lucian was actually afraid of him. Still, he refrained, not wanting to shatter her belief in his boss’s power.
He smiled at her, slowly raising his hand to touch her chin. He made her look at Maya, who was walking toward their table to serve their order.
"Iris, darling, let’s not talk about that," Xavier said gently. She glared at him because he showed his PDA* before Niles and Justin.
She sighed silently, and when her gaze fell on Maya, she instantly forgot what she had asked Xavier. Her heart tensed as Maya stood beside her and placed their coffee on the table.
"Enjoy your coffee," Maya said politely. Then, she nodded slightly and returned to the cashier’s desk.
After seeing Maya walk away, Iris could finally breathe more relaxed. Still, something stirred her emotions. She tried to hide them, or at least not to show it to all of them.
"I’m glad Sister Maya didn’t recognize me at all," Iris said, her voice barely audible. However, the three vampires heard her voice clearly since their hearing abilities differed from regular humans.
"He didn’t recognize us either," Justin said, then sipped his warm coffee.
"Oh, you guys also alter their memories about you?" She asked curiously.
"Yep, we do that too, to a few people we encounter too frequently when we are about to leave a place," Niles explained.
Iris could only nod. She understood why they did that. Their appearances did not change because they were all immortals, and it would be a problem if someone recognized them when they returned to this place in the future.
