Rebirth as The Vampire Lord's Wife
Chapter 139: Confusing

Chapter 139: Confusing

Maya, busy behind the coffee machine, was surprised when she saw Iris enter the cafe.

"Good morning, Iris. I’m so happy to see you," Maya smiled at her and continued making coffee. "What brings you here?" she asked excitedly.

Iris smiled back at Maya. She joined her behind the counter and sat in the cashier’s chair. "I have free time today, so I decided to come and help you guys," she said while checking the order list. "Can you and Kevin manage the cafe on your own?"

She was concerned because usually, this cafe was run by three people, but now only two. She knew they must be overwhelmed.

"So far, we’ve been able to handle things. It’s just that Kevin needs some assistance in the kitchen," Maya smiled faintly, glancing in the kitchen direction.

Iris understood what Maya was trying to say. She could only give her a faint smile. "Should we hire a part-timer to help him in the kitchen!?" she suggested.

"Well, I did suggest that to him, but he didn’t feel comfortable mentioning it to Ms. Gray," Maya explained.

Iris pondered for a while to find the best solution to this situation. With summer approaching and the temperature rising, this area would become increasingly busy with tourists heading to Lonely Mountain. Before going to the mountain, tourists often stopped by this cafe.

Considering that only two of them were managing the cafe, Iris was sure Kevin would struggle to keep up, especially with only one day off on Mondays.

After some thought, she glanced at Maya, who had just returned from serving coffee to a customer.

"Sister Maya, please try to find someone who can assist Kevin. As for Grandma, I’ll discuss it with her when she calls me," Iris suggested.

Maya’s eyes widened with joy at the idea, knowing their workload would be much lighter.

"Thank you, Iris. I’ll start looking for a part-timer soon," Maya said.

Iris rose from her chair, saying, "Sister, let me handle the coffee. You can focus on other tasks." She immediately took over the coffee-making duties while Maya cleared tables and assisted Kevin in the kitchen.

Having helped at the cafe numerous times, Iris was well-acquainted with her responsibilities. She became engrossed in making coffee and taking orders from the incoming customers, mainly tourists.

Only when lunchtime had passed, and the cafe began to quiet down Iris realized she had received numerous texts and missed calls from Xavier.

When she was about to call him, she heard Kevin asking her to enjoy the late lunch he had prepared. She didn’t decline his offer, as it was already three in the afternoon.

"Thank you, Kevin," Iris smiled at him.

...

Iris headed to the dining room.

For some reason, she found dining alone in that room unusual. Usually, she shared food with her grandmother or Xavier, and now, she felt lonely.

Iris couldn’t enjoy her lunch. And, for the first time, she ate faster than usual. After that, she went upstairs to her bedroom to take care of some things. She also wanted to test her teleportation ability.

When Iris entered her room, she was surprised to find the room was clean and tidy, even more so than when she lived there. It looked as if someone had been cleaning the room daily.

"Did Sister Maya clean this room for me?" She mumbled, feeling a mix of happiness and guilt, knowing that it might add to Maya’s workload. She thought to talk to Maya later to stop her from doing this.

After Iris collected the essential items she needed from her study table, she called Xavier first before starting her practice.

On the first ring, the call connected. Iris was surprised to hear Xavier’s concerned voice on the other end.

"Is everything okay there?" Xavier asked.

"Yeah, sorry for not calling you sooner. I was quite busy helping at the cafe and didn’t check my cell phone..." Iris began to tell what happened at the cafe, including the many tourists who started arriving to explore the area and stop by the Gray Cafe.

"Don’t push yourself. I don’t want you to get tired, Iris. And don’t forget to call Justin when you’re done," Xavier reminded her.

"I will," Iris answered with a smile, pleased with his concern. "What about you? Is everything okay there?" she asked.

"Yes, everything is fine. I’ll try to return as soon as possible today," Xavier assured her.

"Really? Y-You can come back today?" Iris’s face lit up with joy at the thought of Xavier returning tonight. It meant she wouldn’t have to spend the evening alone, and they could enjoy their usual activities like watching movies and having dinner together.

"I’ll do my best," Xavier chuckled, pleased by her enthusiasm. "Alright, I need to go now, Iris. I have some things to take care of. Goodbye."

"Goodbye, Xavier..." Iris’s smile never faded, even though several seconds had passed since Xavier ended the call. However, not long after, she remembered wanting to practice her teleportation abilities.

...

For the first time, she tries to teleport downstairs to her grandmother’s bedroom. To her delight, she succeeded on her first try. She then tried to return to her room upstairs, and once again, she succeeded.

"This is strange! Why can’t I do this at Xavier’s house? I can’t even teleport to his bedroom?" Iris pondered, trying to figure out the reason why.

After several minutes of thinking, Iris’s body froze as something crossed her mind.

"My God! Does Xavier also have a magical shield just like Gavriel has?" she muttered softly. This was the only reason she could think of at the moment. But it felt absurd because Xavier is not a creature like Gavriel or Lucian. Xavier is just an ordinary person.

"No, impossible!" she said, feeling dizzy just thinking about this.

For a while, she put aside this matter. She needed to practice long-distance teleportation.

Iris took her cell phone from her coat pocket and texted Maya. Inform her that she would take a nap for a while. She didn’t want Maya to come to her room because now, she wanted to try teleporting to the forest behind her house.
