Rebirth as The Vampire Lord's Wife -
Chapter 137: Sudden Departure
Chapter 137: Sudden Departure
Two months later.
Many things had happened since Iris began living with Xavier, but most importantly, she had adapted well. She also felt grateful for Xavier’s kindness and affection toward her.
However, one thing that piqued her curiosity was that Xavier never slept in her room. She didn’t know whether she should be happy about it or not.
They were busy with their college days in the past months and enjoyed numerous activities near the villa. Xavier had also taken her to his beach house a few times during the weekends.
The weather had been much warmer in the last few days as spring slowly approached. The forest behind the house was already turning green, and the lake was no longer frozen.
What had made her especially happy lately was the news that her grandmother was thoroughly enjoying her trip to the Asian continent. She had heard from Grand Uncle Finley about her grandma’s health, and she was healthy and happy so far.
Apart from that, she hadn’t received any new assignments from Lucian in the past two months and hadn’t communicated with Gavriel either. She felt relaxed as if she were on vacation.
...
Today, Iris didn’t have any plans to leave the house as it was the weekend. However, a knock on the door woke her up.
When she checked the clock on the nightstand, it was only seven in the morning. This worried her because it was the first time Xavier had woken her up like this.
She immediately opened the door to find Xavier wearing a worried expression, which was unusual for her to see.
"I’m sorry, Iris, I wake you early," he said.
"Xavier? What happened? Why did you—" She couldn’t finish her words as Xavier pulled her into his arms. Her heartbeat quickened, and she felt anxious. "Is everything alright? Tell me, please!"
Iris’ worry grew as she waited for him to explain. After a while, Xavier’s embrace finally loosened, and with warm eyes, he looked at her face before giving her a light kiss on the lips.
"Nothing serious happened, but I must go to the other district. I have some business to attend to in District 3," he explained. "And I will only return tomorrow morning."
"Family business matters?" Iris asked. She knew a little about his family business, which was managed by his uncle Killian. However, as the heir to the Darkwood business empire, Xavier occasionally had to take care of company matters.
"Yes, they need me there."
"Gosh, Xavier... you had me worried," she said, smiling at him before resting her head on his chest. "I thought something bad had happened." Her arms wrapped around his waist.
"Iris, I’m sorry to make you worry," he said, resting his chin on her head. "I’m just frustrated that I have to go now. I promise I’ll be back in the morning before you wake up."
"Don’t worry about me. I won’t be bored at home. Justin and Niles will keep me company here," she reassured him.
"Hmm," Xavier felt much better. "Alright, you go back to sleep." He said and pushed her away gently, as he wanted to see her face.
Iris released her hug and looked into his eyes. "No, I want to walk you to your car," she insisted.
Xavier chuckled as he looked at her appearance; she was still in her silk gown with messy hair, but her beauty still mesmerized him.
"Okay, but you should put on your coat first. I don’t want them to see my woman so sexy like this..." Xavier glanced at her body.
Iris gasped in surprise, realizing how alluring she looked at this moment. Feeling embarrassed, she immediately ran into her room.
After she put on her coat and tied her hair, she immediately went out of her bedroom and met Xavier.
"Who will take you to the airport?" Iris asked as they entered the elevator.
"Niles. He’ll drive me there," Xavier said. In truth, he could easily teleport to District 3, but he couldn’t do so because Iris wanted to see him off. Thus, Niles had to pretend to take him to the airport.
"Iris, while I’m gone, you must stay home. Don’t go anywhere. If... you have to go out, ensure Justin accompanies you." Xavier ordered earnestly.
Actually, today, Iris had initially planned to stay at home. Still, because Xavier was leaving, she changed her mind and wanted to visit Gray Cafe. She hadn’t seen Maya and Kevin in several days.
"Can I go to Gray Cafe?" Iris asked.
Xavier pondered for a while before replying, "Sure. But Justin has to go with you. Don’t go there alone."
Iris could only smile, noticing how concerned he was. "Xavier, why are you so worried about my safety? It’s only a few minutes away..." Iris’s voice trailed off when she saw Xavier frown, his sharp gaze fixed on her.
"Alright, alright... I’ll go with Justin," she said, offering a smile to put his mind at ease.
Lately, Xavier had become very protective of her. Every time she objected, he would use her grandmother’s order as an excuse, emphasizing that he didn’t want anything to happen to her while her grandma wasn’t around.
And, she never seemed to win when arguing with him about such matters.
Xavier smiled as he gently ruffled the top of her hair when he heard her promise.
"Don’t get hurt..." he said, and Iris responded with a nod.
When they reached his car, Xavier kissed her lips again before finally getting in. However, the car had only just left the parking area when he noticed Iris entering the house.
He waved and smiled at her, but Xavier’s smile vanished as soon as she closed the door. He turned to look at Niles.
"Drive!" he ordered coldly. "Ensure her safety, Niles."
"Yes, my lord! I’ll make sure she’s safe until you return."
"Thank you!" Xavier said and disappeared from the car.
Niles’s calm expression gradually faded as he drove the car away from Darkwood Villa, his demeanor turning dark.
