Chapter 136: She Knows
Chapter 136: She Knows
Xavier gazed at Iris, who remained silent beside him. He saw her face slowly turning gloomy as she looked at the distant forest.
He followed her line of sight, curious about what had suddenly put her in a bad mood. However, he saw nothing but an endless forest covered in white snow.
’Did she see something I can’t see?’ Xavier was stunned just thinking about it. He turned his head to look at her once more.
"Iris, why do you look upset? Is something bothering you now?" He couldn’t help but ask. And, when his gaze met her worried eyes. It made him even more convinced she was in a bad mood.
Xavier felt frustrated because he couldn’t read what was on her mind, what she was thinking. Only with her, he feels powerless, like now.
Iris was stunned when she saw the worry in Xavier’s gaze. She quickly answered, "No, nothing. I’m fine—"
She tried to smile at him, even though she knew her smile didn’t reach her eyes. She was in a bad mood after attempting to remember her lost memories but failing.
Xavier didn’t ask any more questions, though he could guess that Iris wasn’t telling him the truth.
"We’d better go back. You could catch a cold if you stay in this place for too long," Xavier said, then walked toward the house.
Iris followed him from behind. After just a few minutes of walking, she could hear the sound of a car slowly approaching from a distance. She turned toward the driveway and saw a familiar black car driving towards the house.
"Why is my car—" Before Iris could finish her sentence, Xavier stopped walking and turned to her.
"Iris, I forgot to tell you. I asked Justin to pick up your car from Gray Cafe," Xavier explained.
"I see," Iris said. As she looked at the car finally stopping at the usual parking spot, a faint smile appeared on her face as she remembered something.
"What makes you smile like that?" Xavier asked, confused as he saw her.
Iris looked at Xavier with a smile. Instead of answering his question, she thanked him.
"Thank you, Xavier..."
Her alluring smile was enough to make Xavier feel something inside him awaken. He was mesmerized by her smile.
"Why? I don’t remember doing anything that deserves thanks like this," Xavier asked. He didn’t wait for her to reply but continued walking, trying to distract his mind.
Iris followed him, her smile still adorning her face as she said, "Thank you for letting me buy your expensive car at such a low price..."
Instantly, Xavier’s steps stopped. He turned quickly to her, but his sudden halt made her bump into his chest. He felt amused as Iris’s head grazed his chest.
"W-Why did you suddenly stop?" Iris snapped as she stepped back to create distance between them while rubbing her sore forehead.
"You know about that car?" Xavier asked, confused. "Did that fool Justin tell you everything?" he continued after seeing Iris smile mysteriously.
"I will punish him!!" Xavier mumbled, feeling annoyed that stupid Justin had exposed him to Iris.
Panicking and sensing that Xavier was about to take out his anger on Justin, she quickly grabbed his hand and explained.
"Xavier, stop—" Iris said hurriedly. "Justin wasn’t the one who told me. But, I found out on my own..." She shook her head while chuckling. "Well, Mr. Darkwood, only a fool wouldn’t have figured it out. I became suspicious when he handed over the car."
Xavier frowned but didn’t say a word.
"And I got confirmation when I accepted the car’s documents. I did a background check and discovered detailed information about the previous car owner. My investigation led me to connect the previous owner’s name to your family company," she explained.
Xavier gasped in surprise. How could Justin make such a foolish mistake? He had explicitly instructed Justin to hide the information meticulously, leaving no traces that could be traced back to him.
Iris continued, "Also... Justin claimed he got that car from his wealthy friend. Even though I’ve only known you guys for the past year, it’s quite clear that Justin only has you and Niles as his best friends. I never suspected Niles owned the car, but I did suspect you from the start..."
"So, you’ve known for a while but kept it to yourself?" Xavier muttered softly. "Why?"
"Well, I just wanted to wait for the right opportunity to talk, like now." Iris paused for a moment, glancing to see his expression. When she saw him smile, she continued, "And Xavier... Thank you for what you did with my room upstairs. I love it."
A proud smile appeared at the corner of his lips before he said, "It’s nothing. Just consider it our engagement gift," he said casually, but for Iris, it sounded lovely.
She felt even more drawn to this man. Despite his cold personality, he sometimes sounded sweet and warm to her.
...
Later, the two of them arrived in the living room, and that’s when Niles and Justin appeared to join them.
Iris sat on the couch, narrowing her eyes at Justin sitting in front of her, looking relaxed.
"Justin, you should start getting ready to accept your defeat," a mischievous smile appeared on Iris’s lips, making Justin frown upon hearing her words.
"What do you want to say, Iris?" Justin asked, confused. Not only was Justin confused by Iris’s words, but Niles and Xavier also looked at Iris, curious.
She didn’t immediately respond to Justin’s question but enjoyed seeing him start to get restless.
"Oh, please, Iris Gray... Spit it out now," Justin said, feeling impatient.
"Do you still remember our bet?"
"Bet?" Justin frowned, trying to remember. But it didn’t take long for him to recall. "Oh! I remember now. Have our scores been released yet?"
Iris nodded, responding to his question.
"Really?" In a hurry, he took his cell phone and tried to check their test scores.
"No need to check, Justin. Just prepare yourself. I will ask you what to do as my reward," Iris grinned.
