Chapter 135: What She Wants To Do
Chapter 135: What She Wants To Do
Iris heard a soft knock on the door. She immediately woke up and sat at the edge of the bed.
After tying her hair into a messy bun, she walked to the door and opened it.
She saw Xavier standing in his casual house clothes, looking fresh as if he had just come out of the bathroom. She could smell a faint mint fragrance on him.
"You slept with your coat on?"
Iris was stunned hearing his question. She looked at herself, surprised to realize she was still wearing her coat. No wonder she felt so hot when she slept and also uncomfortable. She simply smiled in response to his question.
"Alright, go change first. Your breakfast is ready. Well, this is not breakfast, but brunch," he said. "I will wait for you at the dining table."
"Thanks," she answered, faintly smiling as she saw him leave.
Iris didn’t waste any more time. She didn’t want to make him wait on the first day she stayed at his house.
After changing into comfortable home clothes she found in her walk-in closet, she immediately went downstairs.
She didn’t see anyone in the dining room, only Xavier, who was sitting in his chair at the end of the table. She noticed her plate arranged right to his left. However, she didn’t see a plate in front of Xavier, only a coffee cup.
"Xavier, you didn’t eat?"
"I’ll accompany you with my coffee. Hurry up and eat, Iris," Xavier said, then took a sip of the beast’s blood coffee. "Your grandma would scold me if she knew you skipped your meal."
"Hahaha, so now you’re Grandma’s spy?" she said.
"Well, yeah..." A faint smile appears on his lips.
Iris turned her gaze to the table, and once again, she gasped, looking at the many dishes now laid before her.
She couldn’t tell if this was breakfast or lunch because so many delicious dishes were on the table before her: roasted chicken, beef short ribs, mashed potatoes, Scallion pancake, and fruit salad. There was also orange juice and coffee.
"Iris, I didn’t know what kind of food you like, so I asked Chef to provide a variety," Xavier explained as he saw her starting to eat, clearly noticing her confused gaze.
He added, "You can talk to the chef later about your preferences so he can cook that for you..."
"Okay, I’ll talk to him later," Iris nodded. It would be best to let the chef know about her food preferences. It is also impractical for a chef to prepare large quantities of food every time she eats; there is no way she could finish everything.
After eating a few bites, she felt full and glanced at him. "Xavier, where are Niles and Justin? I hope they can join me for this meal. It’s too much for me; I can’t finish it all..."
"It’s okay. Someone will finish it. You don’t have to force yourself."
"Oh, thank God. I could have overeat and died if you asked me to finish this all..." she laughed faintly.
Xavier felt amused watching her rub her flat tummy. An idea crossed his mind.
"Do you want to take a walk to the lake?" He offered to help her to digest.
She nodded and stood up from her seat. After going to her room to grab her coat and put on warm clothes, they walked to the backyard, heading toward the frozen lake.
Iris followed Xavier, who walked a few steps ahead of her. They walked in silence; no one spoke. She was too immersed in seeing the expanse of forest across the lake blanketed with white snow under the clear blue sky.
The place was tranquil, with no sound of the wind blowing, no engine noises, and no one talking. It was very calm, and not even the sound of animals in the distance could be heard. It was as if she were walking in a soundproof room.
She really liked the tranquility of this place but didn’t enjoy the biting cold air of winter. Fortunately, this winter season won’t last forever. It would eventually be replaced by summer.
Just the thought of this upcoming summer excited her, and she eagerly anticipated it.
After a few minutes of walking almost entirely around the frozen lake on a stone path that seemed to be cleared daily—as if someone cleaned it regularly—Xavier finally stopped.
He turned to face her and asked, "Are you tired?"
"No, I just don’t like this cold temperature." She stopped a few steps from him.
"Shall we go back now?"
"No rush," she said as she turned her gaze toward the frozen lake. "Can we ice skate on this frozen lake?" she asked curiously.
"Yes, but wait for another week. We can also go fishing there..."
"Really? Sounds good," Iris said excitedly. She wanted to do things she had never experienced in her past life, to enjoy her time like this—walking without the fear of someone trying to kill her, going fishing with someone she liked, hiking, ice skating on the frozen lake, and much more activity she wanted to do.
Because, in the past, she never experienced that kind of thing. A holiday or me-time was a luxury for her. She had spent almost her entire life carrying out one mission after another, leaving little time to enjoy life.
That’s why when she had the opportunity to retire from being an assassin, she asked her boss to let her go. She felt she had worked enough to—
Suddenly, Iris felt her brain being enveloped in darkness again.
She couldn’t remember her boss or even the name of her assassin organization.
It felt like she wanted to delve deeper into her memories. However, no matter how hard she tries to recall, all her memories remain blurry. She feels even more frustrated.
She could only shake her head in annoyance while gazing at the distant mountain peak.
’God! Can you give me back my memories, please?’ Once again, she pleaded with God, hoping He would hear her request.
