Chapter 129: Surprised To Know About His Parents

Chapter 129: Surprised To Know About His Parents

Iris silently sighed upon hearing Xavier announce his plan to her grandmother. She couldn’t help but feel frustrated. They were supposed to tell her grandmother about their engagement first, but Xavier bypassed that step.

After scolding Xavier through her gaze, Iris turned to Grandma.

"Grandma, Xavier, and—"

Before Iris could finish her sentence, Cassandra said, "Xavier, I don’t mind my granddaughter living with you, but you both should get engaged first," she said firmly.

She liked Xavier but couldn’t let her granddaughter move in without a clear commitment, without him proposing to Iris.

Cassandra continued, "I know you are both young and still in college. You can’t possibly get married quickly; however, an engagement is a must. If you’re engaged, I’ll agree to hand Iris over to you. And I’ll follow Dr. Finley’s advice to travel around the world..."

Xavier and Iris exchanged glances, surprised to hear how quickly Cassandra agreed.

Later...

Iris gestured for Xavier to remain silent; she would explain to her grandma.

She turned to her and said, "Grandma, actually, Xavier has already proposed to me," while showing the diamond ring on her finger.

Cassandra was stunned to hear that. She took Iris’ hand and checked the ring more closely. Earlier, she had seen the ring but had thought it was one of Iris’ usual jewelry pieces. After confirming that the ring was indeed an engagement ring, she gasped.

"Oh my God, is this serious?" Cassandra said, her eyes welling up with tears.

"Yes, Grandma," Iris replied with a smile. "Last night, Xavier proposed to me..." Her cheeks warmed as she spoke.

"X-Xavier... Iris... congratulations, my dear. Grandma, so happy to hear this good news..." Cassandra said, her eyes sparkling with joy.

She had initially thought Xavier wouldn’t be so quick to propose to Iris, considering they were only nineteen years old and still in college. However, she was pleasantly surprised by their commitment.

"Grandma Gray, thank you," Xavier said gently. "I will take care of and look after Iris from now on. You don’t have to worry about her anymore, Grandma..."

Cassandra nodded happily, but her smile faded when she remembered something.

Her hand was tightly clenched before she asked, "Xavier, I appreciate your concern for my granddaughter," Cassandra’s voice sounded stiff, and her eyes locked onto his. "But what about your parents? Have you told them about your plan to ask Iris to live with you? Do they also know that you have proposed to Iris?"

Cassandra wasn’t the only one curious to hear Xavier’s answer. Iris shared the same question, her gaze fixed on Xavier.

When Xavier’s gaze met Iris’s curious eyes, she smiled lovingly at her before he turned to Cassandra and said, "Grandma Gray, my parents died a long time ago. My Parents and my cousin’s parents died in a plane crash..."

Cassandra and Iris were shocked to hear that, especially Iris. This was the first time she had listened to the details of his parents’ story directly from him. She had only heard rumors about it until now.

"No elders are living in my house. It’s just me and my two cousins, Niles and Justin, who stay there..." Xavier added.

Cassandra felt sorry for bringing up this painful matter. "I feel sorry to hear that, Xavier," she said softly.

"That was a long time ago, Grandma. It’s fine," Xavier reassured her with a smile before continuing, "We only have one uncle. His name is Killian Darkwood, but he rarely visits us because he is the one who takes care of all the family business, and he’s always abroad. As for permission from my parents, you don’t need to worry about it. I believe... my parents would have liked Iris."

A long silence hung in the air after Xavier finished his sentence. Iris and Cassandra seemed at a loss for words at this moment; they were still too shocked to hear about Xavier’s family.

Before long, Cassandra finally broke the silence. Her eyes were filled with warmth as she said, "Xavier, I will trust Iris to you. But please never hurt her feelings," her voice trembled slightly.

Iris almost choked upon hearing her grandma’s words. She felt warm but, at the same time, embarrassed. However, she didn’t try to stop Grandma from continuing her words and instead lowered her head, hiding her blushing face.

Then, with teary eyes, Cassandra looked at Iris, "If, one day, you feel you no longer love her and don’t want to be with her, don’t just leave her, but return her to me nicely..."

Xavier was stunned to hear Cassandra’s words. This was the first time he had heard a sentence like this in his entire life. He felt his relationship with Iris was much more meaningful than he thought.

After a few seconds of thinking about the right words to answer her, he said in a formal tone, "Grandma Gray, I should apologize to you because that will never happen. I will never hurt her and will never return this woman to you. I will cherish her for the rest of my life..."

Iris blushed even more, overwhelmed by Xavier’s sincere words.

’Gosh! Why does he sound so cheesy now?’ Iris silently talks to herself. She never knew that Xavier could be this super sweet. She almost felt like she was now drowning in his honey pool. She could only shake her head, trying to distract her mind.

Cassandra was delighted to hear Xavier’s answer. "I will remember your words until I die, Xavier!"

Instantly, Iris flinched at her grandma’s words. "Grandma, can you stop saying that?" she protested. However, her grandma responded with a gentle pinch on her cheeks.

"Ouch!" Iris cried. "Grandma, why are you pinching me? It hurts..."

"Are you happy because Xavier has proposed to you?" Cassandra playfully asked.

However, it was clear that her question made Iris even more embarrassed. She didn’t know how to answer her grandma’s question; however, when she saw Xavier smile at her lovingly, she couldn’t help but say, "Hmm, I’m happy..."
