Chapter 128: Cassandra Refuses!
Chapter 128: Cassandra Refuses!
Iris gripped her grandmother’s hand tightly before continuing through her tears, "Forgive your ignorant granddaughter..." She sobbed softly. "But now, I have changed. I am no longer the old Iris who would trouble you. I will help you get through this ordeal, Grandma."
"Oh dear," Cassandra couldn’t help but pull her only granddaughter into her embrace, allowing her to pour out her sadness.
Hearing Iris weep like that could break her heart, but Cassandra couldn’t cry anymore since her tears had dried up.
Since discovering her illness in the past few years, Cassandra had cried almost every night. However, her tears weren’t shed out of fear of death but rather of concern for leaving Iris alone. At that time, Iris was still immature. She couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her alone.
Every night, she prayed to God, pleading with the creator of this life to transform her granddaughter into a better, more independent person. It seemed as though all her nightly prayers had been heard, especially after Iris woke up from her coma. Her granddaughter had gradually shed her immaturity and become gentler and calmer. Even God seemed to have softened Xavier’s heart, leading to his acceptance of Iris.
Recently, Cassandra had felt that God might be preparing to take her life, given how all her prayers had been answered. This made her happy and afraid at the same time that she would really leave Iris forever.
"Stop crying like a baby, Iris. Your beauty will be marred if you cry like this," Cassandra tried to cheer her up while gently stroking her back.
However, Iris’s sobs only grew louder, earning a smile from Cassandra.
"Iris, my dear... If my future grandson-in-law were here, he definitely wouldn’t like you anymore if he saw your tear-streaked face like this. So, you better stop now, huh!?" Cassandra cheerfully teases her.
"Grandma Gray, I would still like her even if she turned ’ugly,’" Xavier’s deep but gentle voice resonated from behind them.
Iris was stunned upon hearing his voice. She quickly wiped away the traces of her tears and turned to see Xavier standing at the entrance, wearing a warm smile.
Before she could find her words, her grandmother shouted happily, "Oh... My future grandson-in-law, I thought you had already gone home... Come join us here." She encouraged him to sit with them.
Iris was left speechless. Her eyes narrowed at him as if silently asking, "Why did you come in?" She hadn’t even texted him, but he had already made his way inside.
Xavier could only offer her his calm, warm smile.
...
Cassandra suddenly felt happy when she saw Xavier with them because with him here, she thought they didn’t need to talk about her illness anymore. She believed her granddaughter would stop her questions about it, wouldn’t she?
However, Cassandra was mistaken. Iris’s following sentence shocked her even more. Iris continued talking about Dr. Finley’s suggestion of traveling worldwide to enjoy life.
"So, Grandma... Now, I want you to stop managing Gray Cafe. I want you to follow Dr. Finley’s advice," Iris said firmly, gently gripping her grandmother’s cold hand. "Go, find your happiness, and stop worrying about me, Grandma..."
Seeing her grandmother not responding and the explicit rejection in her eyes, Iris didn’t give up. She continued her plea.
"If you’re concerned about Gray Cafe, we can ask Maya and Kevin to manage it. And, if you’re worried about me, please stop. Just this once, trust me," Iris pleaded. She stared at her grandmother’s anxious eyes to reassure her that she was no longer the same Iris from the past.
She added, "I’m not the spoiled Iris you used to know. You have to believe in me now, Grandma... I can live independently and take care of myself. So, stop worrying about me, huh!?"
Cassandra’s eyes trembled slightly upon hearing her words. She tried to believe her, but fear still lingered within her.
She remained confused and unable to make a decision. Her concerns centered around leaving Iris alone. Even if she goes on holiday, she would not enjoy the trip because, in the end, she would be thinking about her granddaughter.
Xavier, who had been silently listening to their conversation, could actually hear Cassandra’s inner thoughts. He couldn’t help but speak up, "Grandma, is your only concern that Iris will be alone in this house?" he asked.
Cassandra turned her gaze towards Xavier and nodded. "Yes. How can I possibly enjoy my holiday if I leave her alone in this house?" she said softly, smiling at him. "It’s hard to leave Iris alone. Moreover, what happened to her a few weeks ago still hasn’t faded from my memory. I—"
"Grandma, why don’t you believe me? I told you not to worry about me anymore," Iris said, growing impatient with her grandmother.
Cassandra was left speechless by her stubborn granddaughter’s response. That wasn’t the point she was trying to convey. She couldn’t find the words to continue and could only sigh deeply. She turned her gaze away from Iris.
"Grandma Gray, you don’t have to worry about Iris. I will take care of her," Xavier’s words surprised Cassandra and Iris.
A faint smile appeared on Xavier’s handsome face before he continued, "Iris will not live alone here in this house; she will move in with me to my house, Grandma Gray."
Cassandra’s eyes widened as she felt shock wash over her upon hearing this. She opened her mouth several times, wanting to ask what he meant, but her words seemed trapped in her mind. She was utterly speechless as she looked at Xavier, who was now gazing at Iris.
Then, Cassandra turned her gaze to Iris and was stunned to see her smiling, not shocked as if she already knew about the plan to move into his house.
’Did they already discuss this?’ Cassandra wondered.
Iris silently sighed upon hearing Xavier announce his plan to her grandmother.
She couldn’t help but feel frustrated. They were supposed to tell her grandmother about their engagement first, but Xavier bypassed that step.
