Chapter 108: Powerful Being
Chapter 108: Powerful Being
"Gavriel... You know? I’m so damn relieved now! Xavier won’t be calling me for a few hours. He’s on a plane heading home..." Iris said while gazing out of the window, observing the busy street as people in the city began their morning activities.
Gavriel, who heard Iris’ words, could only shake his head slowly. He knew very well how capable Xavier Darkwood was. That man didn’t need a plane to travel wherever he wanted. He was incredibly powerful and could teleport to any place he desired in the blink of an eye.
So different from him, as he could only teleport a certain distance. That’s why he worked hard to climb the top of the chain. At least he could become an Angel, which would increase his power. But it seemed like he needed extra time to achieve that.
He was sure that by now, Xavier was already in Silenthill or even nearby. It’s just that he couldn’t sense his presence. All he knew was that a powerful being like Xavier would reveal himself if he wanted to.
He could only behave politely toward Iris, not wanting to anger Lord Vampire again, at least for now.
"Sounds good," Gavriel replied calmly, casting a quick glance at Iris. "Now, you can focus on your mission. We might be able to wrap it up more quickly as well. So, you can head home before your boyfriend arrives..."
"Yes, that’s my plan too. I’ll eliminate Dudley Velcoro as soon as possible," Iris said, turning her gaze toward Gavriel.
"But remember, Iris, I can’t directly intervene to assist you. I’m here to answer your questions and provide backup only if your life is in danger," Gavriel reminded her.
As a mentor, Gavriel was prohibited from directly helping Iris; he could only observe and offer assistance if her life was at risk. In this world, sinners were often backed by dark forces such as demons and dark witches—a piece of information he hadn’t yet disclosed to her, as it might frighten her if she knew it now.
"I understand," Iris replied, having thoroughly read Lucian’s report. She wouldn’t make a mistake this time.
"Gavriel, I have a question," Iris suddenly remembers something. When she saw him nod, she continued, "May I know who collected the soul of the sinner I killed?"
He frowned, looking at her. "Didn’t I already tell you before?"
"No, you didn’t," she replied.
"Well, it should be Lucian. He’s in charge of your target because he assigned the mission to you," Gavriel explained.
"I see," Iris fell silent momentarily, trying to recall her first mission. If she had waited at the crime scene back then, perhaps she would have met Lucian. Unfortunately, she hadn’t known that and left the scene hastily.
"So, Lucian will also be here today, right?"
"Probably," Gavriel frowned, eyeing her closely. "Why are you curious about him?"
"Well, I just wanted to meet him. After all, he’s my boss," Iris said excitedly, looking forward to meeting the person with black wings she had seen almost every day on her invisible phone screen.
"You want to wait for Lucian?" Gavriel raised an eyebrow, appearing puzzled. He continued to remind her, "Iris, earlier, you said you wanted to go home soon after finishing your mission; Xavier might figure out that you’re in Darkhill—"
Before Gavriel could finish his sentence, Iris interrupted, "No worries. His flight is around 14 hours, so we still have plenty of time." Iris grinned. "Besides, you can teleport me home, right?"
Gavriel was rendered speechless.
’Bloody hell! This girl is becoming less afraid of me and can even give me orders now?’ Gavriel could only vent his frustration inwardly.
He wanted to scold her but dismissed that intention when he thought about the Vampire Lord’s reaction if he did that. He could only nod, feeling somewhat defeated by this audacious young lady.
"Sure... Sure... Lady Iris!" Gavriel said.
"Thank you, Gavriel. You’re my best mentor!" She smiled while raising her thumb to cheer him up. She could see his expression looked annoyed, but she chose to ignore it.
"But, I’m not sure if Lucian will show himself to you. That man is a bit eccentric. He rarely appears before humans, even before me. He is, like a G—" Gavriel’s voice suddenly faded, realizing he shouldn’t reveal too much to this young lady. This wasn’t the right time for her to learn more.
"What!?" Iris was surprised to hear that. "—So, even if I wait for him, he won’t appear before me if he doesn’t want to?" She asked, sounding disappointed.
"Well, I’m just saying. You can ask him by replying to his text if you want to know," Gavriel said. He believed Lucian wouldn’t appear before Iris, especially if he discovered she was Xavier Darkwood’s lover.
Iris shook her head, "No need," she said faintly.
She wouldn’t beg to meet him. She would just wait. If Lucian didn’t want to show himself, she couldn’t force him, right?
"Speaking of which, why do you look like this?" Gavriel asked about Iris’ appearance, attempting to change the subject. For some unknown reason, he felt uncomfortable discussing Lucian.
Gavriel never knew whether that man heard them now or not; he couldn’t sense his presence because Lucian was one of the most powerful beings on Earth, much like Xavier Darkwood.
Iris briefly turned to look at Gavriel, who was still focused on driving the car. "I’m afraid someone might recognize me," she explained.
"Recognize you?"
"Yes," Iris nodded. "Gavriel, do you know why all my targets are somehow connected to me?" She had been pondering this question since last night when she discovered that her current target, Dudley Velcoro, had a connection to her through Ruby Winters.
"What do you mean?" Gavriel was confused by Iris’ question.
"Well, you already know my first target was my professor, right?"
"Yes!?"
"This time, the target isn’t directly related to me, but he’s involved with someone who’s also connected to me."
Seeing Gavriel frown, Iris quickly continued, "My college friend is secretly involved with my target... she is my target’s secret love affair!"
