Chapter 101: Creepy Feeling
Chapter 101: Creepy Feeling
Xavier wished he could be there with her, but he couldn’t. His hands clenched into fists as he struggled to contain his anger. It frustrated him that someone tried to challenge him at a time like this.
"Don’t be sad. We will find a way to cure her," Xavier said, his words the only solace he could offer to uplift her mood.
"Hmm, t-thank you, Xavier. I hope... we can find the best doctor to cure her. She is my only family now—" Iris tried to contain her sadness, but it proved challenging. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, and when she spoke, her voice cracked.
’Why am I feeling like this?’ She wondered silently, forcing a smile and nodding in response to Xavier’s comforting words.
Xavier seethed inside as he watched her grief unfold. The urge to go back and hug her surged through him, but he pushed it back, remembering Niles’ words echoing in his mind.
’This is for her safety... This is for her,’ he repeated to himself.
He knew that Iris lacked the strength to defend herself against a formidable creature like his own or another, and he couldn’t be her protector around the clock. And apart from her is the best option. They need to find out the motive of the one who trespasses his land.
"Iris, I promise I will help Grandma Gray," he assured her, "Right now, you need to stay calm and not show your sadness to prevent your grandma from feeling the same way."
His words touched her heart. Indeed, she shouldn’t show her sadness, especially in front of her grandmother, because that could cause her illness to get worse.
She nodded at him, then said, "But, truthfully, Grandma hasn’t told me anything about this. I found out when I discovered her medical records. Can I ask her about it? I want her to know I’m here, to hear whatever she wants to share. I don’t want her to keep this to herself."
Xavier fell into a brief silence, pondering the situation. After a few moments, he offered a reassuring smile to Iris.
"Iris, you can certainly discuss her illness with her, but perhaps not right now," he paused for a moment, breaking into a playful smile as he noticed her furrowed brow.
"If you keep that expression, Iris Gray, you might find fine wrinkles appearing on your face soon," he teased, hoping to lighten the mood.
Iris’s eyes widened slightly at his words. ’Oh my gosh, he’s making fun of me when I’m feeling so serious!’ she thought, taking a deep breath and forcing a smile.
"That’s much better," Xavier noted with a slight nod. "You should smile, my love..." he added, though Iris felt her heart skip a beat at his words. "We should see the doctor and talk to him about Grandma Gray’s condition before you speak with her," he continued.
His words took aback Iris. Xavier’s suggestion made perfect sense. As her grandmother’s only family, she had every right to know about her health condition. Undoubtedly, the hospital would provide her with an explanation if she sought one from her grandma’s doctor, right?
"That’s a good idea, Xavier," Iris agreed. "But I can’t go there alone. I’ll wait for you to come back."
Xavier nodded, understanding her concern. "Yes, of course. I’ll see if I can return early to meet the doctor sooner."
"Thank you, Xavier," Iris replied with relief. Their conversation had lightened her emotional burden, and it felt like the heavy weight on her shoulders had been lifted.
"Earlier, you mentioned that you saw Grandma’s medical report. Can you send it to me?" Xavier asked.
He wanted to ensure that if Cassandra’s illness couldn’t be treated with modern medical methods, there might be another way to cure it: through magic. However, this was the last option he wanted to choose because it would force him to confront his past.
"Yes, I have it," Iris nodded quickly. "Can I have your email address? I’ve never had it before."
"No need for email," Xavier replied calmly. "I’ll provide you with a special link to upload it."
"Ah, you’re right because the file is quite large, so it can’t be sent via regular email," Iris said.
"Okay, I’ll send the link now. But after you upload the file, make sure to rest. It’s almost midnight there..."
Iris nodded.
"Alright, my love, I will end the video call now. I’ll call you again tomorrow when you wake up." The corners of his lips lifted and revealed a charming smile.
After exchanging sweet words, Iris found herself blushing at Xavier’s affection.
’Oh my... Iris Gray! You’re almost thirty. Act properly. Behave!’ She scolded herself as she stared at the black screen after Xavier ended the call.
However, she didn’t move immediately because she was waiting for Xavier to send her the link and password to upload her grandma’s medical report.
It didn’t take long before she received what she was waiting for. Iris immediately uploaded the file from the hospital, hoping Xavier could find a solution to help her grandmother.
Later, after finishing sending all the files to Xavier, she lay down on her bed and gazed at the ceiling in her room, holding her warm cheek and giggling like a teenager, recalling Xavier’s sweet words, especially when he called her ’My Love.’
After a while, Iris turned off the bedroom light to sleep. Just as she was about to doze off, her cell phone on the nightstand vibrated.
"Is that Xavier calling again?" She mumbled and reached for her phone to check. However, to her surprise, it was from Justin, not Xavier.
[Justin: ] Good night, Iris. Before you sleep, don’t forget to lock your window.
Iris was puzzled as she read Justin’s message.
’Why would he suddenly remind me to lock the window?’
Slowly, she approached the window and was shocked to find it still open. She promptly closed and locked it.
Confusion washed over her. Her bedroom didn’t face the street, so if Justin had passed by her house, he wouldn’t have seen the open window unless he had been behind her house.
Suddenly, a creepy feeling came over her, and she quickly typed a response to Justin’s text.
[Iris: ] How did you know?
