Chapter 100: Finally, Talking To Xavier

Chapter 100: Finally, Talking To Xavier

"Selina, what are you doing here?" Justin’s icy voice echoed in the car.

Selina’s expression hardened. She was too shocked to answer his question. Instead, she asked him, "J-Justin, why did you suddenly appear in my car?" Her voice sounded shaky.

Justin’s pupils flared, staring at Selina. "Answer my question, Selina," he raised his voice, unable to hold his composure.

At this moment, he was too angry with himself because he had forgotten to guard Iris at the hospital; he had been busy tracking the person they were after. He only remembered this critical task a few minutes ago. When he arrived at this place, he was surprised to see Selina’s car.

This is something he hadn’t expected.

He and the others had been trying to keep Selina away from Iris because her resistance to human blood was still weak, especially the rare fragrant blood like Iris’s. Yet, this girl managed to find Iris’s house.

This made him afraid that Selina really could sense Iris’s blood and that she might have malicious intentions towards Iris.

Justin continued, "Why did you appear here when you were supposed to be in the cabin!? Isn’t your business in town finished?"

Selina was stunned. She indeed had to go back home directly, but her mind was distracted by the girl with the tempting blood fragrance.

She forced a smile before saying, "I... I was about to stop here to buy coffee, but after I realized I had been gone too long, I decided to go home." She lied. She didn’t want Justin to know that there was a girl with an alluring blood fragrance at that Gray Cafe — this time, she couldn’t share her prey.

Justin narrowed his eyes to inspect her but didn’t detect anything suspicious in her gaze.

’Am I overreacting, suspecting her?’ Justin pondered before finally saying, "So, what are you waiting for? Go home now!" With that, he vanished from Selina’s car.

Selina’s calm expression suddenly paled after seeing Justin leave her car. She didn’t want to linger here. She knew Justin was still in the area, hiding somewhere.

She suspected that Justin and the others were tracking someone who had trespassed on their land last night. Without delay, she started her car engine and stepped on the gas pedal, heading back to her cabin house in the middle of Lonely Mountain.

At that moment, the sun no longer illuminated the horizon, and the lonely moon shone brightly in the dark sky.

Since returning from the hospital, Iris had been engrossed in investigating her past. She was annoyed, likely because none of the victims had a significant history that would make them targets for the assassin guild.

However, her seriousness was momentarily interrupted when she received a video call from Xavier. All her irritation vanished when she answered his video call.

Her eyes sparkled as she looked at him on her laptop screen. He appeared handsome as always, and to her surprise, the backdrop showed a bright, sunny scene with a vast blue sea behind him. It seemed like he was in a different country where there was no trace of snow at all.

"Hey, beautiful... Why do I feel like... I already miss you?" Xavier’s calm and tender voice melted her heart. Although she wanted to respond to his sweet words, she decided to change the subject.

"Xavier, where are you now?" she asked.

Xavier didn’t reply immediately. Instead, he shifted his position slightly, revealing his current location through the background of the video call.

Iris was taken aback as she recognized the view. She knew this place all too well, recognizing one of the landmarks in the distance. This country had been a stopover for her in the past, either before or after she carried out her missions.

"Wow! You’re in Dubai? I thought you wouldn’t go too far," she said, surprised that he was on a different continent.

"Yes, I have some business here," Xavier replied, although it was a lie. In reality, he had no particular agenda in Dubai. He preferred to stay indoors, avoiding the scorching sun. Despite being able to tolerate the heat, excessive exposure to sunlight could quickly drain his energy. It was a place that vampires like him usually avoided. Fortunately, the temperature was bearable because it was now the end of the year.

Not wanting to delve into the subject of his arrival in Dubai, Xavier shifted the conversation to inquire about her grandmother’s examination results.

He was genuinely curious because he had overheard Grandma Gray’s thoughts a few weeks ago regarding her illness. However, he had not developed any feelings for Iris at the time and remained oblivious to the details.

"How is Granny Gray doing?" he asked.

Iris’ expression immediately darkened as she remembered the results she had discovered in the hospital database regarding her grandmother’s illness and impending death. She hesitated for a moment, struggling to find the right words. She refrained from revealing the specifics to Xavier, fearing he might discover her hacking skills.

While waiting for her to speak, Xavier returned to his office desk and placed his cell phone down.

When Xavier saw her sad, he couldn’t help but ask, "What’s wrong, Iris? Is there something serious about Grandma Gray’s condition?" He narrowed his eyes, gazing intently into hers.

Iris paused momentarily, taking a deep breath before responding, "Xavier, I heard something unusual at the hospital..." Her voice wavered, and she couldn’t bring herself to utter the painful word. "My grandma, she has stage four cancer," she finally managed to say.

Xavier’s expression shifted from curiosity to shock upon hearing the news. However, he tried to maintain a composed demeanor, not wanting to add to her sadness.

"Iris, are you certain about this? Have you seen her medical records or spoken to her doctor?" Xavier asked calmly.

Iris nodded weakly, her tears glistening in her eyes.

"Hmm, I’m sure," she replied, her voice filled with sorrow.

Seeing her in distress stirred sadness in him as well.

Xavier wished he could be there with her, but he couldn’t. His hands clenched into fists as he struggled to contain his anger. It frustrated him that someone tried to challenge him at a time like this.
