Chapter 48: Curious

Aurora knew that all her father’s assets were tied up in property.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t sell them immediately because she needed to return to her hometown to meet with the attorney.

Returning to her hometown to sell her father’s assets was the last thing she wanted to do, as she wasn’t ready to face the Spencer family there. Not yet.

Thinking about Aurora Spencer’s financial situation made her head spin.

Aurora wanted to access the money from her previous life, but she feared someone might find out she had done so.

She knew she needed to prepare something before taking that step.

As she walked to the door, a thought suddenly crossed her mind.

She remembered that Alex had mentioned he would transfer her father’s money to her.

’Did he forget about it? Should I call him now?’ she wondered, feeling puzzled.

After a quick thought, she decided to wait and ask him later when they met.

...

When Aurora reached the first floor, she saw Martin waiting in the living room. He seemed to be waiting for her and looked relieved when he saw her.

"Young Madam, did you bring your ID card?" Martin asked as he approached her.

Aurora handed him her ID card.

"What about my picture? Tell me your email, and I can send it to you," she inquired, even though she already knew his email address.

"Yes, ma’am."

After sending the picture to Martin’s email, Aurora decided to take the opportunity to ask him about her stone house in the backyard.

She wondered why Alex seemed upset when he saw her in that area. She knew her stone house was not off-limits; anyone could go there.

However, last night, she had heard Alex repeatedly refer to the place as a restricted area where no one could visit.

"Martin, a moment, please..."

"Yes, Madam. What can I do for you, Madam?" Martin walked back to Aurora.

"Last night, I walked to the back garden, followed the path behind the trees, and found a small stone house," she recounted how Alex had strictly forbidden her from going there.

Martin’s previously calm expression gradually darkened. Sadness was clearly visible in his eyes. Not a single word escaped his lips, and he tried to look away to avoid talking about it.

’Why is he unwilling to speak about it to me? What the hell happened in this house?’ Aurora thought, feeling increasingly confused by Martin’s unusual demeanor.

Strangely, all the gossip she had heard from Tina didn’t mention her at all. Not once. This meant that no one in the staff dormitory discussed Aurora Moon.

Aurora decided not to press Martin further, not wanting to make him feel awkward or uncomfortable with her question.

"Martin, I’m sorry if my question is too sensitive. You don’t have to answer it," she said gently.

A faint smile graced her lips before she turned away and walked toward the door. She decided to put that matter aside for now.

Perhaps this wasn’t the right time for them to discuss Aurora Moon. Maybe they were still in mourning.

However, after only a few steps, she heard Martin’s hurried footsteps approaching her.

"Madam, please wait."

"Yes?" Aurora turned to look at him as he stopped a few paces away. "What is it, Martin?" she asked again, noticing the worry in his eyes.

"Madam, I apologize for not informing you sooner. Indeed, the path leading to the small stone house in the back is forbidden to all house residents." Martin finally answered.

Aurora was shocked to hear this but refrained from interrupting Martin as he spoke.

"Only Master Alex and I are allowed to go there to clean it every day. I apologize if Master Alex stopped you from going there because I failed to mention it to you as soon as you arrived..."

Martin felt terrible; he was supposed to tell her when she arrived but had forgotten yesterday.

"It’s fine, Martin. I was just curious: Why is everyone forbidden from going there? Is that house one of Alex’s private workplaces?" Aurora asked, pretending not to know the answer.

She wanted to confirm her suspicions about Alex’s feelings for her rather than rely on mere guesses.

Martin was silent for a moment as if searching for the right words. He was concerned that he might say something wrong and upset his master.

"Ma’am, I don’t know if you’ve heard about Master Alex’s personal assistant. Her name was Miss Aurora Moon..." Martin paused to check her reaction.

Martin worried she might feel jealous or angry, but he was surprised to see her calm and aware of the situation.

"Oh, Miss Aurora Moon, yes, I heard about her from Alvin. I’ve also spoken about her with Alex a few times. Does she own that house?" She asked innocently, even though she felt guilty about lying to him.

"Yes, Master Alex forbids anyone from going there. It seems he is still mourning the sudden death of his assistant."

Aurora no longer asked Martin about her stone house and Aurora Moon because she had already received her desired answer.

After discussing a few more topics, she excused herself and hurried to the main door.

However, the memories of her encounter with Alex last night made her heart race again, especially when she asked him about his feelings.

She feels puzzled!

...

Arrive at the front yard.

Aurora was amused as she watched Josh standing by the car in his new outfit: an oversized black hoodie, jeans, and white sneakers. He looked younger and fresher. Usually, he wears a black outfit, which makes him look gloomy.

She was grateful that this man hadn’t changed his hair color. If he follows Alex’s suggestion to change it to red, she might forbid him from walking near her.

"Madam..."

Josh bowed slightly before opening the car door for Aurora.

She approached him but paused before getting in to look at him with her concerned gaze.

"Can you stop calling me Madam? You need to get used to calling me Aurora!" she insisted.

Aurora took a deep breath as she noticed Josh’s rejection in his gaze.
