Chapter 44: Silly Excuse

Aurora set aside her worries as she continued down the stairs, moving lightly and making no sound.

She felt relieved that she did not encounter anyone when she reached the back door.

However, she hesitated before stepping outside and decided to wait.

After a few minutes, Aurora finally gathered her courage and moved past the swimming pool, skillfully avoiding the CCTV cameras along the path to her stone house.

As Aurora approached her house, her heart raced faster with each step.

A mix of emotions washed over her. She felt happy to finally return to the place where she had spent so many years, but at the same time, sadness filled her because she was coming back not as her true self but as someone else.

Sneaking in the middle of the night like this, Aurora felt like a thief. She moved stealthily, afraid of being caught red-handed.

’Calm down, Rory! Everyone is asleep... No one will see you.’

Aurora talked to herself, trying to soothe her increasingly tense heart as she walked.

’I’m home! This is my place. I don’t have to worry about anything...’

A smile graced her lips as she attempted to open the gate to her garden.

However, she felt half her soul had left her when a hand gripped her shoulder tightly.

As she caught a familiar scent from behind, she recognized the man standing behind her, ’Alex!’

Aurora shivered as she recalled that this man had never visited her home. Her hands clenched tightly as she struggled to find an excuse for him.

’Why did he come to my house? Why now?’ she expressed her frustration before glancing back.

She met his fierce blue eyes, which radiated an anger she was not used to seeing.

"Alex, you hurt—" Before Aurora could finish her sentence, Alex interrupted her impatiently.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he asked icily, his tone cold enough to make Aurora feel as if her entire body had frozen.

He still held her shoulders tightly as if he wanted to crush her bones.

"I was lost..." Just like before, she couldn’t finish her words as Alex angrily spoke again.

"Did you know this is a place you were forbidden to enter? Never come to this area!" he commanded firmly.

"Alex, I didn’t—"

"This is my order, Aurora Spencer. Never come to this area!"

She felt the urge to smack him for his stubbornness, but the intensity in his gaze stopped her. She knew he was serious about what he was saying.

Taking a deep breath to fill her stuffy chest, her eyes remained fixed on his angry stare.

"Alex...please," Her soft, trembling voice was enough to make his fierce gaze waver.

"Can you let me finish my words? Can you please stop hurting me? My shoulder feels like—" She didn’t finish her sentence as Alex’s shocked expression made him release his grip on her shoulder.

Aurora smiled at him while rubbing her sore shoulder. She felt mixed emotions, realizing this man was angry because of her former self.

She didn’t mind that Alex was protective of her, even from his new wife. However, something weighed heavily on her mind regarding his unusual attitude toward her after her death.

’Why is he behaving like this? I’m merely his butler, his assistant. I’m not his lover...’

Countless questions filled her mind.

’No way! Does Alex like me? Is he seriously in love with me? No! That’s impossible... This powerful man, Alexander Graystone, likes me?’

Suddenly, she felt her blood run cold as she stared at him in horror.

"Speak! Why are you here? What are you doing here?" His stern tone demanded an answer.

"Nothing! I was just looking for some fresh air. So, I was walking, gazing at the moon and stars, when my feet led me here. I noticed the garden looked mesmerizing. It was so mesmerizing that it drove me to enter it..."

That was the only answer she could think of for now, hoping the angry Alex would believe her.

But, of course, Alex didn’t believe her.

"Do you think I’m some kid who would buy that silly excuse? I won’t. Now, return to the house and remember: never come to this area again."

Alex turned toward the path leading to the main house, leaving Aurora frozen as she watched him walk away.

Her smile spread across her lips as she saw his black silk robe fluttering in the night breeze. He resembled a young prince from the period drama she had once watched with Tina.

’Hello, Young Master! I didn’t realize you look so hot from behind,’ she thought with amusement, a smile crossing her face. However, her smile faded when she heard Alex’s annoyed voice in the distance.

"Miss Spencer, stop being stubborn. Follow me, NOW!"

Alex’s commanding tone forced Aurora to move her legs, and she quickly found herself running after him.

She managed to catch up near the pool but slowed her pace to maintain a not-too-awkward distance from him. Not too close or too far.

Still, she refrained from asking him anything or making any noise to avoid further annoying him.

But Alex suddenly stopped and immediately turned to face her. Aurora nearly stumbled forward, colliding with his firm chest as her steps abruptly stopped.

She silently vented her frustration in her mind while steadily adjusting her posture, gazing at him with a slight furrow in her brow.

"Did you ask me to return home? Why are you stopping here again?" she asked casually, ignoring his angry gaze as she turned her attention to the pool beside them.

Alex cleared his throat before speaking. "You still haven’t answered me: why were you in the garden?"

Before Aurora could respond, Alex interrupted, "Don’t give me the same excuse; that would insult my intelligence."

His tone was cold enough to make Aurora curse him in her mind.

Aurora couldn’t believe that, even in her second life, her encounter with Alex felt similar; this man was still annoying. Well, not the same, but even worse. He really irritated her.

She wanted to tell him the truth. However, since this man has always been very rational, he probably wouldn’t believe her story, would he?
