Chapter 50: The Attack

Chapter 50: The Attack

Dante’s phone rang; he quickly reached into his pocket and answered the call without staring at it. Even with all his entourage and bodyguards, he still didn’t feel safe.

"I can see you ducking down on your car like the scaredy cat you are." The unmistakable voice came on.

It was Raven.

Blood rushed to Dante’s face in anger. "You fucking did this?!" He snarled, not even thinking how she got his number.

"I can just shoot into your car and kill you right this instant." Her icy voice said.

"You think you’ll get away from murdering a politician? Huh?" He growled, "You’ll be on every country’s wanted list. You’ll be hunted down and you’ll be caught."

"You think I’m scared of that?" She asked, her voice amused, "I’ve died once, Dante. You were the ones responsible for my death... you think I’m afraid of dying a second time?"

"I don’t give a fuck of what gibberish you’re spewing if you ever..."

Another gunshot was heard with the sound of glass smashing. Barry Gaines groaned out in pain as he sprawled out on the floor of the car.

The bullet has hit him.

"Oops!" Raven said, with false surprise "My bad, I hated the way you were speaking."

Intense fear clutched Dante. Raven wasn’t bluffing! She is ready to kill him right here and now without blinking an eye.

"Hey..." Dante trembled in fear backing away from Barry, " Let’s talk about this, eh? I can give you money... I can give you anything... please, I beg of you."

"Hmm... really?"

"Yes, yes!" He said desperately. "Name your price!"

"My price?" She repeated thoughtfully, "I want you to go live and tell your followers of the crime you committed. Tell the whole world that ten years ago, you had a hand in the crime of the sexual assault that happened to the nineteen-year-old Raven Moon, and that’s why she’s hunting you. Then, I can consider leaving you out of the list."

Dante paused.

No, he can’t do that! He has worked really hard to get where he is today. There’s no way in hell!

He was a well-respected politician and had a huge amount of followers and supporters. He’ll certainly lose them all.

"You can’t do that, can you?" Raven’s

Then came the blaring siren of the police. Dante exhaled in relief. He was finally safe.

"This is far from over, Dante Perez."

And then the line went dead.

The police were already swarming the area but Dante refused to get out.

One of the police officers opened the car door, "Mr Perez, are you okay?" The police officer asked his eyes widening in shock as he saw unconscious Barry Gaines on the floor in a pool of blood.

"Get the ambulance!" He yelled at the hospital’s fellow officers. "Now! Immediately! There’s an injured victim here!"

"Search around the whole area! The culprit mustn’t escape! Block everywhere!"

An officer screamed and the other dispersed.

The scene was already crowded with both ordinary people and the journalists throwing questions at Dante with their cameras flashing here and there.

"Was this threat from your opposition party?" one threw in.

"Will you still go through with the election?" another pressed.

"Did you see the shooter before the attack?" a voice called out from the crowd.

"Do you think this was an assassination attempt?" someone asked urgently.

"How do you feel, sir? Were you seriously injured?" came a concerned query.

"Will you be increasing your security from now on?" a reporter shouted over the noise.

"What message do you have for your supporters?" another journalist pushed forward.

"Do you think political violence is getting worse in this country?" one asked, notebook in hand.

"Have you spoken to law enforcement? Any leads on who did this?" someone called out.

"Do you believe this attack was meant to silence you?" came a firm voice from the back

Dante Perez was embarrassed already as it was. He was escorted back into his home by the police. The so-called bodyguards who had taken to their heels when the gunshot was heard already knew they were going to be fired immediately.

Tasha had also heard the gunshot and had quickly rushed into her kids’ room to protect them.

Meanwhile Raven had already put on her disguise. She had fired the shot through an AK 47 at the top of a skyscraper.

She wasn’t going to harm Dante too much neither was she planning on killing him. Dante was a politician loved by all, so she thought the best revenge was for him to be publicly humiliated in front of the whole world.

She was the one who had called the police officers, and they pressed and told them that there was an attack on Dante Perez’s mansion. She wanted him to be so famous at this time that when his crime was finally revealed, he’d hit rock bottom and fall into depression. That was why she attacked him.

The higher Dante rises, the harder he falls.

She already had on her frizzy wig and the fake pregnancy belly and she put on makeup that made her look quite like a tired pregnant woman.

Adam was already waiting for her. He had decided to come with her because he knew this was dangerous.

He, too, had on the disguise of a distressed husband.

Together they both headed to the elevator and then to the ground floor, making believe they were couples expecting a baby soon. The building was already blocked by armed policemen. No one was allowed to exit the building but they had already anticipated it.

While everyone waited in the building lobby as the police searched everyone, Raven... quite the actress... began to yell in pain like pregnant women typically did, as though the baby was coming out anytime soon.

Adam screamed as well, equally playing the distressed husband who was scared of losing his wife.

All attention in the lobby turned to them.

"Her water just broke!" Andrew yelled in a trembling voice, "Someone, please help! Officer, please, she really needs to go to the hospital!"

The officer stared around the whole lobby and everyone was empathizing with the couples.

Raven screamed again in feigned pain, hyperventilating.

"Okay, okay." The officer said, allowing them to pass.

He escorted them into their car, and the officer helped Raven sit on the passenger seat.

"Thank you, officer," Adam said, starting the engine.

"Wait," The officer said, squinting his eyes at Raven. "Aren’t you the fugitive, Raven Moon?"
