Chapter 25: Chapter 25 The Shameless Person_1
"He’s not qualified, but am I?" a deep voice carried over, followed by the sight of Dio Powell approaching the two.
Rachel Bailey was stunned. The CEO?
Dio Powell must have heard their entire conversation. He approached and glared fiercely at Nicholas Coldwell. As soon as Nicholas saw him, he instinctively suppressed his rage.
Pointing at Rachel Bailey, Dio Powell commanded rudely, "You, now, immediately, get out of Cosmos!"
If it weren’t for this damned woman tipping off Julia Bluen, how could the Powell Family have been ridiculed in public? How could they possibly have offended Glades Horne? Although he hadn’t learned of any detrimental actions from the Horne and Bluen families toward Cosmos, he was still terrified that Glades Horne would suddenly retaliate on Julia Bluen’s behalf. After all, she was Glades Horne’s wife’s younger sister! That status alone was enough to make the Powell Family tremble. And all of this was because of this damned woman!
"The CEO?"
Rachel Bailey came back to her senses and called out in a low voice, disbelief in her eyes. So their CEO was this unreasonable too!
"Rachel Bailey, you’re fired," Dio Powell stated aggressively once more.
Fired? For tipping off Julia? How could everyone in the Powell Family be so unreasonable? So shameless?
"I signed a labor contract," Rachel Bailey retorted unapologetically. "According to its terms, if you fire me without reason, you have to compensate me. As long as you pay me every cent I’m owed, I’ll leave immediately! Working for shameless people like you, I’m worried I’ll become shameless myself."
"You!"
Livid, Dio Powell immediately pulled a checkbook from his pocket. He rapidly wrote down a few numbers, tore off the check, and flung it forcefully at Rachel Bailey, bellowing, "Take your money and scram!"
"Sorry, I want cash. Who knows if your check can even be cashed at the bank?" Rachel Bailey didn’t take the check, letting it fall to the ground in front of her.
Her words made both Dio Powell’s and Nicholas Coldwell’s expressions darken.
In the end, however, they gave Rachel Bailey cash and threw her out of Cosmos Group.
Dio Powell, unable to contain his anger, even called his contacts in the business world, telling them not to hire a woman named Rachel Bailey. He wanted to retaliate against her professionally.
Rachel Bailey had no idea Dio Powell could be so venomous. Clutching her belongings, she followed the path Julia Bluen had taken earlier and walked out of the company’s doors.
"PAH!" she spat towards the company entrance. "What’s so great about them! If one employer doesn’t want you, another will. Am I, Rachel Bailey, afraid of not finding a job? Even if I can’t, I can set up a street stall or collect recyclables. I won’t starve! Shameless!"
After spitting a few times towards the company entrance, Rachel Bailey pushed her bicycle along. She slung the small bag containing all her wages around her waist and tightened it. Then, she mounted her bicycle and rode towards the small apartment she rented.
Since I’ve been fired, I might as well take a day off and look for a job tomorrow, she thought.
However, I can’t let Julia know about this, she resolved. I don’t want her to feel guilty and offer me a job as compensation. I don’t want that kind of reparation. For justice, for my friend, losing one job is no big deal!
In the CEO’s Office on the top floor of the Cosmos Group Office Building, Dio Powell lit a cigarette. He stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, smoking as he watched Rachel Bailey’s every move at the company entrance below.
Nicholas Coldwell stood behind him, eyes downcast, not daring to speak. Today, he was supposed to be leaving on his honeymoon, but he had sneaked back to the company to see his ex-girlfriend one last time. This was sure to displease my father-in-law. Now, I have to endure everything, he thought.
Dio Powell pulled out his phone again, quickly dialed a number, and spoke softly, "Long, do me a favor..." He spoke for a while, and Nicholas Coldwell gathered that Dio Powell was instructing the other party to arrange for a thug to snatch Rachel Bailey’s waist bag.
Julia Bluen is the second daughter of the Bluen Family consortium; I wouldn’t dare touch her, Dio Powell thought. But a mere working girl like Rachel Bailey? Retaliating against her is as easy as flipping my hand.
Rachel Bailey had always been frugal. Unlike others, she didn’t buy expensive and elegant handbags. Instead, she used a fanny pack—the kind businesses use to handle money conveniently—to carry her small personal items. Today, however, that pack contained several months’ wages, totaling over ten thousand yuan. Company wages were normally direct-deposited into employees’ bank accounts, but Rachel Bailey had been given cash due to the special circumstances.
Although Nicholas Coldwell knew this was criminal, he didn’t utter a single word. In his heart, he despised Rachel Bailey for blowing the whistle, for humiliating him.
Julia Bluen, who had resigned, stood by the roadside waiting for the number 5 bus. It passed by every fifteen minutes. A bus had just gone by when she came out, so she had missed it and would have to wait another fifteen minutes.
Rachel Bailey didn’t know Julia Bluen hadn’t boarded the bus yet. Riding her bicycle along the cement road in front of Cosmos Group towards the main road, she pondered, Should I deposit the wages I just received into the bank, or keep the cash for job hunting?
"Rachel?"
A familiar voice called out. Rachel Bailey turned her gaze and saw Julia Bluen waving at her. Rachel was taken aback. What rotten luck! I was planning to keep this from Julia, so why did I have to bump into her right now?
"Julia." Rachel Bailey forced a smile as she stopped beside Julia Bluen.
With a puzzled look, Julia Bluen asked, "Don’t you have to work?" Her eyes scanned Rachel Bailey. She doesn’t look like she’s out on an errand; it seems more like she’s finished work for the day. But it’s still working hours. Why isn’t Rachel at work?
"I took the day off," Rachel Bailey said, telling a white lie.
"I resigned, and you took the day off?" Julia Bluen sounded somewhat disbelieving. "Would the Chief Financial Officer really approve your leave?"
The Finance Department has several accountants, but each handles different tasks, Julia mused. Some manage external accounts, others internal. Rachel and I both handled external accounts. Now that I’ve resigned, all the external account work effectively falls on her. Would the Chief Financial Officer really be so kind as to grant her leave?
"He approved it readily. Probably because they found out you’re the second daughter of the Bluen Family and wanted to curry favor," Rachel Bailey laughed. We’re good friends, after all. Once Julia’s identity was revealed, everyone’s attitude towards me changed pretty quickly—except for the shameless ones, of course.
