Chapter 26: Chapter 26 Retaliation_1
Julia Bluen reined in her smile, replacing it with an apologetic one, and said to Rachel Bailey, somewhat embarrassed, "Rachel, I’m sorry, I lied to you."
Those who aren’t from affluent families don’t understand the loneliness within them. When people from these families make friends, they seldom find true ones; relationships are mostly formed over interests. If there’s no benefit to be had, they become strangers in an instant. She and Rachel Bailey had been colleagues for three years, and their friendship had become extremely deep. The deeper the friendship, the more she feared losing Rachel Bailey as a friend, so she had always been too afraid to reveal her true identity as a wealthy heiress to her good friend.
"I understand you." Rachel Bailey, supporting her bicycle, smiled at Julia Bluen with not a hint of blame in her expression.
The two of them stood by the side of the road talking, with vehicles passing back and forth. There were also many pedestrians on the sidewalk; some walked briskly, others strolled leisurely, and some idly brushed against the greenery along the road.
Suddenly, a young man dressed in black rushed up from behind Rachel Bailey. As he brushed past her, he quickly snatched the bag from around Rachel’s waist with a forceful tug, breaking the strap and causing Rachel to fall, with the bicycle toppling onto her.
The young man grabbed the bag and bolted.
"OUCH!" Rachel Bailey first cried out in pain, then began screaming, "Robbery, robbery!"
Julia Bluen was startled by the sudden turn of events. Hearing Rachel Bailey’s cry of pain, she snapped back to reality, quickly helped Rachel up, and asked with concern, "Rachel, where did you get hurt? I’ll take you to the hospital."
"Quick!" Rachel Bailey clutched Julia Bluen’s hand tightly, anxiously exclaiming, "My money, there’s over ten thousand yuan in my bag!"
Julia Bluen looked up to see that the young man had already run several hundred meters away. Many people had witnessed the scene, but no one was courageous enough to chase after the robber. People nowadays are very pragmatic, only seeking to protect themselves. They feared that the robber might be carrying a weapon and that acting heroically could cost them their lives.
"Wait here, I’ll go after him for you," Julia Bluen said instinctively. She quickly straightened Rachel Bailey’s bicycle and, after pushing it for a few steps at a run, mounted it and pedaled off in pursuit of the young man.
Rachel Bailey blinked, realizing her friend was wearing a skirt and high heels. Could she really ride a bicycle in that outfit?
"Julia, can you manage?" she blurted out, worried.
"If I can handle four wheels, two should be no problem," came Julia Bluen’s distant reply.
She pedaled the bicycle furiously, thankful it hadn’t been damaged in the fall; it rode smoothly.
For the sake of her friend’s ten thousand yuan, she gave it her all, thinking of nothing else but one single goal—to catch the brazen robber!
The young man also ran desperately. When he saw Julia Bluen chasing him on the bicycle, he ran even faster.
The two of them, in pursuit and flight, enacted an incredibly thrilling chase on the highway.
"Don’t run!"
Julia Bluen’s bicycle flew like the wind as she chased, shouting at the people on the sidewalk, "Make way! Make way!"
She didn’t know how far she had chased until she reached a crosswalk. It was at a red light where many cars were stopped. However, the light was no obstacle to the running youth, who dashed straight across the road. Seeing that he was about to reach the other side, Julia didn’t think twice. She lifted one foot and quickly slipped off her high heel. Then, holding the handlebars with one hand, she threw the high heel at the young man with all her might.
"SMACK!" The aim was true; her heel struck the young man’s calf unerringly, tripping him mid-stride and causing him to sprawl on the ground.
This scene immediately drew the stares of countless onlookers.
The young man was fast, but the fall was hard. He lay on the ground for a while before getting up.
Just as he was thinking of running away again, a strong hand reached out from his side and grabbed his arm, twisting it behind his back with such force that he cried out in pain.
Julia had finally caught up. She hopped off her bike, unconcerned that she was wearing only one shoe, and hurried to the captured youth. She snatched her friend’s fanny pack from his hands and quickly opened it. Confirming her friend’s money was still inside, she breathed a sigh of relief. As she raised her eyes to thank the kind stranger who had intervened, her smile froze. She saw who it was, and her gaze met his inscrutable, angry eyes.
The kind stranger who had helped out was none other than Mr. Glades Horne, her husband.
What are the odds that she would stumble upon such a coincidence!
She was chasing a robber and ran into her brother-in-law—oh, no, her husband whom she had just married yesterday.
Glades Horne’s car was parked on the road. Don’t blame him for driving slow. After giving Ruiz instructions, he thought it over. He decided he wanted to check if his wife had boarded the bus, so he ordered his bodyguards to turn back. They were stopped here by a red light. He hadn’t expected that in just one minute, he would see his wife again, and certainly not that she would be bravely chasing a thief. Having known her for twenty-six years, it was the first time he discovered this brave side of her, which really surprised him.
Glades Horne’s face was dark, very dark, as though a heavy storm was about to break.
His gaze was also dark, cold, and mixed with anger. It rested on Julia’s unnaturally restrained smile like a series of small blades delicately slicing over her face, making her scalp tingle uncomfortably.
Actually, she didn’t even know she had such a brave side herself.
Usually, she was quite refined, thank you very much.
With a swing of his arm, Glades threw the young man to the ground. Two bodyguards exited the car and immediately detained him; one quickly made a call to the police.
Bending over, Glades picked up his wife’s heroically thrown shoe—which could arguably be called a high heel—and handed it to Julia. His chilling eyes fixed on her as he lifted his lips and said coldly, "Put on your shoe!"
