Chapter 197: The Devil Of The Red Land
Grogard was sitting on the upper crate, his eyes fixed on Cid, the young boy visibly annoyed.
"So boy, are you interested in the Devil of the Red Continent? You look like a doll but this attitude awakens something in me."
"Argh... could you stop being weird for a second?!"
The old man laughed heartily, the people showing disgusted faces and murmuring behind them.
"Sorry, sorry, it’s just a normal reaction... I’m just a poor man, like you I was once a valiant captain, handsome, proud, courageous, a true sailor. But that day I’ve lost everything, and my sanity with it. Alright, let’s talk about the beast among monsters, the thing."
In several corners, many people were gathered, all listening to the man whose voice had become the only audible sound.
"I am what we call a sea man. Among the Emissaries, it is a special type of warrior who exclusively fights the monsters of the Rift Marines. I was the leader of a group of 10 people, and our job consisted of fighting the monsters to keep the cargo ships safe. Usually, sea men work more on the coast of the West Sea, but my men and I were the only ones with the balls to brave the Red Sea, because Ambrosia never mind the continent beyond the red sea, there is no shipping on that side, so the only crazy people who come here are just looking for trouble. But about two decades ago me and my crew were charged by the Parliament to lead a secret expedition. Their objective was to establish communication with the Kalaharis and the Elf Kingdom. This man, Agiel, was already at their head and promised us a gigantic fortune if the mission was a success, and like idiots we followed them... come to think of it, if we were wiser, the presence of many ships and thousands of competent emissaries should have warned us."
For the first time, his eyes changed, his smile disappearing as he looked at the ocean in the distance. Some emissaries murmured among themselves at the mention of Agiel’s name, but the old man was now in his own world.
"We traveled like today, it was an expedition full of joy and excitement. My crew was especially eager to show their worth and we couldn’t stop thinking about the different creatures we were going to bring to this continent... how stupid we were. We reached Kalaharis during the night, and what greeted us was an unforgettable sight."
A sparkle shone in his eyes, his face tensing.
"Before we could set foot on land, the first ship exploded. This ship was passing under a cliff, so I can only assume that Wrath jumped from there. The next moment, we discovered the true meaning of dying of fear. You know Sin Avatars now, but do you know the full extent of their power? As a survivor, I was later introduced to what they call: the pressure of Sin."
The members of Freya’s group instinctively shuddered, realizing a familiar occurrence. Grogard stood upright, a vein visibly throbbing on his forehead.
"I don’t know about this new brat’s nor Queen, but what Wrath showed us should only be comparable to Hell. In an instant, I lost the ability to speak, to think, even to see... the world was spinning and I felt like my skin was burning. My blood burned, my muscles tensed, and my last memory was everyone screaming. I regained consciousness later, I didn’t remember don’t remember how long it lasted... but the first thing I saw was my second mate’s neck crushed in my hands... I dared to look up, and then I found myself in hell.
He started to laugh, then burst into menacing laughter, making everyone uncomfortable.
"Can you imagine that? Everyone, every fucking one was fighting like animals! With their bare hands, with weapons! I saw someone rip someone’s cheek off with their teeth!!! I saw a group eating a guy’s organs and I’m sure the boy was still alive! There was red everywhere! Red people, red mist, red water!!! No one was screaming in pain, everyone was roaring with rage! Bloodthirsty! And among them... there he was... jumping from boat to boat... sinking us one by one... Every time he jumped into a boat , there was an explosion, people were flying in the air like birds!!! And that was just the beginning... I saw them... Yes! I saw them too!!! The giants!!!"
His aura expanded, causing a ripple effect among the spectators. Eryl stood up, the man’s menacing appearance, with bloodshot eyes and a grin displaying broken teeth, made him appear even more threatening as he raised his voice.
"Above the cliff, those things were there! I saw them!!! You think you’ve seen everything in the rifts? Imagine the fear of seeing a creature described as your natural enemy! You’ve never been scared before having seen one of these things! They were there, throwing stones, some crazy ones even jumped on us! Imagine! HAHAHA! They can’t swim! Some went straight under, but the ones that were able to reach the boats... Ohoho my boy... a dog in a bowl, a scavenger in a carcass! Have you ever seen a human being chewed alive? Have you seen a big head chew someone right next to you? The tongue trying to reach you? The struggle of the madman who continues to strike even without his lower half?... It was a spectacle worth experiencing!!! And this monster... he never stopped fighting... fire! Fire everywhere!!!... My god... his laugh... Did you hear his laugh? Is this thing the one you want to ask for help? DON’T MAKE ME LAUGH!!!!"
With a powerful jump, he cleared his base and landed forcefully, causing the ground to shatter into fragments. Breathing heavily, his energy began to dwindle. All around him, people stood, pointing their weapons at him, visibly anxious. The man focused on regulating his breath, composed his features, and cast his eyes upwards.
"Too bad, you’ll miss how I got back to Ambrosia. But it will be for the return if you survive."
The sun rose above the horizon, illuminating a new, distant land.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are finally here. Welcome to Kalaharis!"
