Chapter 149: Meeting
The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension and every face was etched with anxiety. Hope and Thomas trailed behind Cid and took their seats next to the other council members, positioning themselves behind the front line of nobles.
Marie and Lilith had previously occupied their seats, but upon hearing the latest update about Dora’s condition, they left them in a hurry, disrupting the room’s order.
"This has to be some kind of sick joke, Miss Candace. Why would you even make such a horrible joke?" Marie’s voice was laced with raw emotions as she spoke
Candace replied in a calm but firm voice.
"As I mentioned before, we couldn’t confirm who was really in control. Every indication pointed towards the Sin of Greed having orchestrated everything. This was our only chance to take control of the situation and avert any potential threat, we had to erase Dora’s memory."
Hope was taken aback by the statement and everything seemed to come to a standstill in the room.
The murmurs that rose in the background sounded muffled and distant as he struggled to process the implications of what he had just heard.
He blinked several times and looked towards his comrade, Thomas, hoping to find some confirmation that it wasn’t just his imagination playing tricks on him.
Thomas was completely frozen, his senses heightened to an almost superhuman level as he tried to absorb every detail around him. Every sound, every emotion, every movement seemed to be amplified, and he struggled to make sense of the sudden turn of events.
Lilith was pounding on Candace’s desk in a fit of rage. Her eyes were blazing, and her voice was shaking with anger.
"What the hell?! How is that possible? How could you do that?! HOW!!!??" She tried to launch herself at the dean’s throat, but Iris, who had been standing nearby, intercepted her just in time.
"Let me go! Bastard! How could you!? How could you do that???!"
"It’s already done; there’s no point in fighting now!" Iris lifted her completely off the ground, keeping her on her shoulders like a bag. Marie placed a hand on her forehead, looking at Dora, who was mesmerized by the student council president’s feat.
Hope lowered his head, noticing his hands were shaking. Then he looked back at Dora, feeling the air becoming increasingly unbreathable.
"What is this... erasing his memory?... what does that mean?"
"I have a question," a man in the back spoke up. "If one of the Queen’s servants is responsible, isn’t that a violation of the Code?"
Candace, who was keeping an eye on Lilith, nodded in agreement.
"Yes, it was a violation of the Code from the moment she attacked Midgard Serpent."
"In that case," another man spoke up, "couldn’t we use it to rebel against the Queen and ally with Fenrir’s general? I think it would be better to bet on her than on this guy here."
"He’s right," a third man chimed in. "If what you’re saying is correct, then Greed is just the same serial murderer with no memory. A Sin is naturally evil, isn’t it?"
The commotion in the room grew louder and louder, causing the professor to raise his voice in an attempt to quell the noise.
The dean cleared her throat and looked at Marie, who appeared to be on the verge of collapsing.
"I told you to hold on to your horses before trying to kill me. I found something more, so bear with it for now, " she said in a resonating voice that reached the three nobles sitting in the front row and Iris, Mary, and Lilith.
Candace coughed to catch everyone’s attention and continued her speech.
"While it’s true that Pride may seem like a better option than the Queen, have you considered why she hasn’t taken any action until now?"
The attendees started discussing the matter among themselves, then a young woman spoke up.
"It’s probably because of the Code. If we inform her that the Queen has breached it, she will likely abandon it and come to us."
Another participant added, "I second this. Relying on the General seems like the best way forward. "
The voices in the room grew louder and everyone agreed that Rhea should only be relied upon as a last resort. Candace found this amusing and laughed.
"Are you all living in a summer dream? Do you really think Rhea will be a light of hope?" she asked.
Silence fell in the room as the dean stood up in her seat.
"Learn your history, kiddos. In this world, there is no God among humans, not even my species. We are just like you, humans with many mistakes. The stronger we are, the wiser we become. Silva won’t do anything for you because she doesn’t have to. Do you think she needs your praise or loyalty? She won’t do anything for the same reason the Queen won’t move an inch: in this Twilight of Gods, nothing but another Avatar can beat them. Fenrir hasn’t suffered as many casualties as Ambrosia because she is actively involved in her country. She literally has no use for you," she said, pointing at Dora.
"But this boy right here is better than them because he doesn’t have the mindset of an Avatar yet. We can raise him into a true hero, and even in the worst case, Greed’s nature will lead him to attack the Players. He is our true hope, our last chance; none of us will face what he has to face."
The last sentence brought the emissaries back to some form of reason. The tales of the Holy Knights and Candace had made them aware that, no matter how hard they trained, none of them could hope to defeat a Player.
As the dean had pointed out, Dora was their only safe bet as a purely formatted Avatar among the well-known ones. They nodded in agreement and whispered among themselves, coming to a consensus.
However, the use of the word "hero" triggered a visceral reaction in Hope, causing him to grit his teeth. It was a painful reminder of a time when he might have stood there and returned to the room, but a certain revelation weeks ago had forced him to disappear from sight for the time being.
"I’m not sure how we can turn him into someone good. If we decide to go to the Kalahari with him, how long would it take to get there?" asked one of the individuals present.
"Firstly, I need to confirm some things with him and his loved ones. He seems ready for battle, but there may be some issues with..."
Just then, a voice interjected,
"I think I know the best way."
Everyone turned to see Thomas, confidently raising his hand.
"Let me handle it. I have an idea of the best way to deal with him, I’ll just kick his ass."
