Chapter 172: What if I told you...

Chapter 172: Chapter 172: What if I told you...

I was sitting across Natalie in a quiet corner of a cafe. I watched as her eyes immediately flickered down to glance at my arm the moment she sat down. Her brows were knitted together to form a tiny frown between her brows. A mixture of worry and concern was swirling in the depth of her eyes as she stared at my arm. "What happened to your arm?"

I glanced at my bandaged arm for a split second before I looked back up to meet her gaze. "Oh, it’s nothing. I fell and scraped my arm," I explained without going too much into detail or bringing up Evelyn. She will find out sooner or later anyway.

She reached out to gently touch my arm. "Does it still hurt? Is it serious? Please be more careful," she urged as the frown etched on her face deepened slightly.

I let a slight smile fall on my lips. "I’m okay now, it was mostly some superficial scratches, don’t worry about me."

"How can I not worry about you, Aurelia?" She asked, her voice laced with concern and genuinity. "You are my daughter, of course I will be worried." The warmth of her words seeped through my skin and tugged at my heartstrings. I couldn’t hold back the smile that was starting to appear on my face. I was still getting used to this – The warmth and love that I have never gotten from my ’mother’.

A low chuckle left my lips. "Thanks, mum," I mumbled under my breath but the words that left my lips felt foreign and unfamiliar. But it did put a smile on her face, hearing me call her ’mum’ once again.

Silence lapsed between both of us for a brief moment before the next few words that left her lips broke the silence. "Aurelia..." She started, her voice trailing off as she hesitated for a moment. "Why don’t you move in with us?" She suggested, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

As soon as the words registered inside my head, I froze and my eyes widened a fraction. Shock and surprise evident on my face as I stared at her with a blank expression that masked my features. I opened my mouth wanting to say something and I ended up stuttering, struggling to find the right words to say. "...What?" I uttered a single word. "Move in with you?" I asked, echoing her words.

She nodded. "Yeah. I mean you are our daughter. I just want to be close to you and catch up on all the lost time," she explained, her dark brown eyes running wild with emotions as we locked eyes.

I lowered my gaze, averting her eyes. "I’m not sure if this is a good idea..." I muttered softly under my breath as I let my gaze remain fixated on my wringing arms. I lifted my head to meet her eyes once again. "James doesn’t like me... and besides, I am already living with Xavier."

"That’s not true!" She exclaimed quickly and inhaled a sharp breath. "Well... He is still very much attached to Eve and is still processing everything. After all, the news was sprung onto him without a single warning. You just need to give him some time to accept it and come to terms with reality."

"I guess you are right. I appreciate the offer but I can’t move in," I insisted, my voice remaining unwavering. "We can meet more often if you like though," I offered an alternative instead, the smile lingering on my lips.

She smiled at me. "Yeah, I would like that."

Third Person POV

"Your parents are here."

Evelyn’s dark green eyes lit up with anticipation within the next second.

"Really?!" Her voice was laced with a hint of excitement, the miserable look that was once plastered across her face immediately faded as she lifted up her head.

"Come on, let’s go, Lloyd."

James and Natalie watched as their daughter walked out from the door behind with her hands cuffed together and they locked eyes from a distance. Her eyes grew wide. "Dad! Mum!" She tried to run over towards them but was promptly held back by the guard. "Get me out of here, it’s miserable here."

James’ gaze softened in an instant as he looked at his daughter dressed in an orange suit and her hands cuffed together, even her long hair was dishevelled and in a mess. "My poor girl..." he muttered under his breath. "Eve, how are you doing?" He asked with his brows furrowed together as she sat down directly opposite of her parents, with only a table keeping them apart.

"Evelyn, is everything okay?" Natalie asked with concern.

She put on a pitiful look on her face. "Horrible, daddy. Nothing is okay, mum," she snapped. "I hate it here, where’s the lawyer?" She questioned, her voice laced with a hint of desperation. "You said you would get me the best lawyer to help me fight my case, right?"

He leaned forward to get closer to her. "Yes, of course, Eve. We are working on it. Don’t worry about it, we will get you out of here as soon as we can. We promise."

"How soon, daddy? I can’t take it any longer," she lamented, frustration was written all over her face. "I feel like I’m going crazy, I’m going insane with each second I am locked up in here. I don’t want to do this anymore."

"Eve, you have to. Hang in there, alright?"

"Your dad is right. You need to stay strong, we will get you out of here," she said with a determined look. Despite what happened between them and everything else, she of course didn’t hold a grudge and would try her best to help her. Afterall, that was the daughter she raised for over 20 years, she wasn’t going to leave her in the lurch just like that. "We are working on it."

Evelyn barely acknowledged her mother’s words, merely glancing over to meet her eyes for no more than a couple of seconds. Instead, her eyes were fixed on her father and tears began to fill the brim of her eyes, threatening to fall at any second now. "You have to help me, daddy," she begged. "I didn’t mean to do it, it was an accident, I didn’t mean to try and run them over."

"Look Eve, whoever they are, they aren’t going to win, we will get you out here like we promised."

A slight smirk tugged at the corners of her lips for a split second but it quickly disappeared. "You sure?" She asked, her voice came out shaky. "No matter who they are, right?"

"No matter who," he assured. "Who are they? I could care less about them, I only care about my daughter, I only care about you."

She smiled, the corners of her lips curling up to form a slight smile.

"That’s good."

"Who are they, Evelyn?" Natalie asked absentmindedly this time, her curious voice reaching Evelyn’s ears. "Are they okay now?" She asked, her tone carrying a slight hint of concern and worry.

She whipped her head over to look at her and their eyes met. "Why do you care, they aren’t important anyway," she sneered with a disdainful scorn. "I just need to get out of here as soon as possible."

Her eyes were narrowed into thin slits this time as she glared at her mother. She leaned in closer, inching nearing towards her. "Why? Do you pity them and think that I should stay in jail?" She asked with a raised brow, the words that left her lips were dripping with accusation.

Stunned by her reply, Natalie blinked a couple of times before her words broke the silence, piercing through the tension that was lingering in the air between them.

"That’s not true at all. I was just simply asking out of curiosity." There was a brief pause before her husband chimed in with a stern look on his face.

"Natalie, stop," he warned through gritted teeth but his words fell on deaf ears.

"Of course I want you to get out as soon as possible, why would I want my daughter to stay in jail?" She continued.

Evelyn let out a loud scoff as she rolled her eyes. "Your daughter?" She repeated, tossing the words right back at her with an incredulous look etched onto her face. "Since when do you regard me as your daughter? You already have Aurelia now, all you need is her, right?" She snarled with displeasure.

"Evelyn, that’s enough," she demanded this time, much to their surprise. Anger flashed past her face for a split second as she kept her gaze steady. "You and Aurelia, you are both my daughters. Don’t ever say such a thing ever again, okay?" She said, her voice firm.

Impulse clouded Evelyn’s judgement within the next second and she blurted out of the next few words without thinking.

"What if I told you that it was Aurelia I was trying to run over? Will you still love me as your daughter? Or will you send me to jail?"
