Chapter 459: Coma or Amnesia?

Chapter 459: Coma or Amnesia?

It felt like an eternity had passed before the doors to the operating room finally opened. During that time, Emma Hart had been silently praying for Damien Sterling’s safety. No one knew how she managed to endure it.

Mr. Sterling Senior rushed forward immediately. "Doctor, how is he?"

His cloudy eyes were filled with worry, and he clutched the doctor’s hand as if it were his last lifeline.

The doctor shook his head. "The situation isn’t good. He recently had a car accident, but was discharged too soon. There’s a blood clot pressing against the brain nerves. If he wakes up, there’s a high chance he’ll have amnesia. But if he doesn’t wake up by tomorrow morning, he’ll likely remain in a coma for life."

Mr. Sterling Senior staggered back a few steps, his deeply wrinkled face turning ashen as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.

He was just talking to me a moment ago, how could he suddenly... be unconscious?

Mr. Sterling Senior turned his suspicious gaze toward Emma Hart. "Tell me, what did you do to Damien Sterling? What happened while I wasn’t around? How did he go from a car accident, to being discharged, and now falling into a coma?"

Emma Hart was equally stunned by the news, unable to comprehend it. How could the Damien Sterling, who was just angrily confronting her and who had saved her not long ago, suddenly be on the verge of becoming a vegetable?

Suddenly, she broke down in tears, crouching down and covering her face with her hands, crying out loud, "No, Damien Sterling can’t be in trouble."

As if struck by a sudden realization, she stood up and turned to the doctor, grabbing his sleeve. "You must be mistaken, right? He was just fine, eating noodles with me—how could he be a vegetable now..."

The doctor looked at Emma Hart with a troubled expression. Dealing with difficult family members like this was always challenging for any doctor. He could only respond cautiously, "I’m really sorry, but after the car accident, he should have stayed in the hospital for observation. He insisted on being discharged..."

Before he could finish, Mr. Sterling Senior yanked Emma Hart away from the doctor.

Emma Hart fell to the ground with a thud, the coldness of the floor seeping into her bones. Her mind kept echoing the doctor’s words: "He should have stayed in the hospital for observation."

Seeing Emma Hart sitting there in shock, Mr. Sterling Senior spoke in a low, stern voice, "How much longer are you going to embarrass yourself here?"

His voice, though aged, carried an indescribable sadness. The burden of his grandson’s accident weighed heavily on his shoulders, bending his back even more.

Emma Hart dejectedly got up, forced to accept the harsh reality. She knew she had to pull herself together to take care of Damien Sterling.

Mr. Sterling Senior paid no further attention to Emma Hart. Leaning on his cane, he peered into the emergency room, but suddenly everything went black before his eyes, and he collapsed as well. Riley Turner caught him just in time, and the medical staff quickly took him into the operating room. Riley Turner anxiously paced back and forth outside.

Emma Hart hesitated for a moment but then walked over and patted Riley Turner on the shoulder, her voice hoarse and dry. "Don’t worry. Sit down and wait. Grandpa will be okay. He’s just in shock."

Riley Turner glanced at Emma Hart but said nothing. After a moment, he finally spoke, "You should go and look after Damien. Don’t let anything go wrong this time. If something does, Grandpa Sterling won’t forgive you when he wakes up."

Emma Hart nodded and headed toward Damien Sterling’s room. Sitting by his bedside, she saw how haggard he looked, his entire demeanor softened as he lay there, no longer the sharp, combative person she was used to.

Seeing Damien Sterling like this tugged at her heartstrings, and she couldn’t help but reach out and gently touch his face.

The mask on his face felt cold and unyielding under her fingers. Emma Hart whispered softly, "Please get better soon. I promise I won’t argue with you anymore."

But there was no response from the unconscious Damien Sterling. Emma Hart withdrew her hand and continued, "Didn’t I promise you something earlier? You were supposed to help me deal with Grandpa. Now you’ve put me in a tough spot. If you don’t wake up soon, I’m going to take that promise back."

Riley Turner paced back and forth outside the operating room, feeling a pang of guilt as Mr. Sterling Senior suddenly suffered a heart attack. He couldn’t help but wonder if he had made a mistake.

If he hadn’t gone out of his way to take that photo, if he hadn’t shown it to Damien Sterling, maybe Damien wouldn’t have impulsively left the hospital, and Mr. Sterling Senior wouldn’t be lying in the operating room now.

Riley knew how much the old man valued his grandson. He had always been strict with Damien in business matters, even though Damien never understood Mr. Sterling Senior and always seemed to be at odds with him.

Riley also understood that Mr. Sterling Senior had always wanted to match the two of them together, believing that Riley could offer Damien more support. Because of this, the old man had shown Riley a lot of affection over the years.

Unfortunately, Damien Sterling had no special feelings for Riley, which is why Riley found herself competing with Emma Hart. Mr. Sterling Senior and the Sterling family liked Riley, and there was no comparison between Riley and Emma Hart, yet Damien was drawn to Emma. This left Riley feeling deeply troubled, which led her to resort to underhanded tactics.

As Riley sat outside, she couldn’t help but wonder if she had really made a mistake.

When the emergency room doors finally opened, Mr. Sterling Senior had regained consciousness. Lying on the hospital bed, he coughed a few times and, forcing a smile, said, "Xiaohui, I’m fine. Don’t worry too much. Go check on Damien."

Riley Turner’s eyes welled up with tears, and she nodded. "Grandpa, don’t worry. Damien will be okay. Please don’t stress yourself. You need to focus on recovering."

Mr. Sterling Senior sighed, "It’s nothing. It’s an old condition. Don’t worry about me. I just got worked up and had an attack."

The doctor signaled to a nurse to take Mr. Sterling Senior away and then turned to Riley Turner, saying, "Are you a family member? Please stay for a moment. I have something to discuss with you."

Riley nodded, and the nurse wheeled Mr. Sterling Senior away. The doctor then said, "The old man’s condition is a bit tricky. Make sure he avoids any more stress. At his age, you need to be very careful to prevent his condition from worsening."

Riley nodded repeatedly. "Thank you, doctor. We understand. We usually avoid stressing him out, but today was because of his grandson..."

The doctor nodded and left, leaving Riley Turner standing there, conflicted. She decided to head to Mr. Sterling Senior’s room instead of Damien Sterling’s, knowing that Emma Hart was already with him. Lately, Emma’s attitude toward Riley had been a bit strange, so Riley decided to avoid any awkwardness.

Besides, it wasn’t right to leave Mr. Sterling Senior alone, especially given his condition. If he got upset again, Riley wanted to be there to comfort him.

Riley couldn’t shake the oppressive feeling that had settled over her. This whole situation was something she had caused, but she never intended for things to turn out this way.

Sitting by Mr. Sterling Senior’s side, Riley pushed down all her other emotions and smiled warmly at the old man.
