Chapter 460: Amnesia

Mr. Sterling Sr. noticed Riley Turner staying by his side, which meant Emma Hart was with Damien Sterling. He felt a twinge of sadness, thinking, "Why are you being so foolish, staying with an old man like me?"

In his heart, Mr. Sterling Sr. believed Riley Turner should be with Damien Sterling instead.

Riley Turner smiled warmly. "Damien would want to see Emma when he wakes up. Besides, I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving you here alone, so I’d rather stay with you."

Mr. Sterling Sr. felt a pang of sorrow for Riley Turner’s thoughtfulness but was also angry at Emma Hart. He couldn’t understand how such a woman could marry into their family. From the past few days’ events, it was clear she was nothing but bad luck.

Riley Turner gently massaged Mr. Sterling Sr.’s fingers, trying to comfort him. "Grandpa, it’s okay. Damien will get better. He won’t give up on everything so easily. You don’t need to worry so much; just focus on getting better."

Mr. Sterling Sr. furrowed his brow, suddenly recalling something they had overlooked. The doctor mentioned two possibilities: one, Damien might not wake up, and two, he might wake up with amnesia.

Riley Turner noticed the sly glint in Mr. Sterling Sr.’s eyes as he frowned. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant was about to happen.

Before Riley Turner could speculate further, Mr. Sterling Sr. asked, "Riley, didn’t the doctor say that if Damien wakes up, there’s a high chance he’ll have amnesia?"

Riley Turner, puzzled by why Mr. Sterling Sr. suddenly remembered this, nodded blankly. The doctor did mention it earlier, but she couldn’t understand why it mattered so much now. "Grandpa, what’s wrong? Is something the matter?"

Suddenly, Mr. Sterling Sr. became excited. This was the perfect opportunity to push that woman out of their family, that harbinger of misfortune. If it weren’t for Damien’s insistence, he would never have agreed to the marriage in the first place.

Mr. Sterling Sr. sat up abruptly, his expression turning serious as he addressed Riley Turner. "Riley, listen to me now. You must go to Damien’s side. The doctor said there’s a possibility of amnesia, so when he wakes up, the first person he sees has to be you."

Riley Turner looked at Mr. Sterling Sr. in shock. A trace of madness appeared on his face, and she could hardly believe he came up with such a devious plan.

Riley Turner hesitated, struggling to find the right words. She did want to become Mrs. Sterling, but not through such underhanded means.

With a conflicted expression, Riley Turner replied, "Grandpa, the doctor did say there’s a strong chance of amnesia, but what if Damien doesn’t lose his memory? Won’t he be furious if he wakes up and I’m there instead of Emma?"

Riley tried to use Damien Sterling to dissuade the old man from his unrealistic plan, but Mr. Sterling Sr. was already fixated on it. He was determined to drive Emma Hart out of the family, no matter what.

Mr. Sterling Sr. shook his head, obsessed. "No, trust me. If he doesn’t lose his memory, we’ll just tell him that girl never came. This plan is flawless."

Riley Turner wrestled with her conscience. "But what if we hide it now, and he remembers later? Damien will blame us."

Mr. Sterling Sr. was no longer listening, his mind entirely consumed with executing his plan. He couldn’t afford to fail this time; he was determined to get rid of that woman.

Struggling to his feet, Mr. Sterling Sr. urged, "Riley, come, help me. We’re going to Damien’s room. I’ll be the bad guy this time, and you’ll stay with Damien, no matter what."

Riley Turner finally let her emotions get the better of her. She gritted her teeth and helped the old man up. As they passed the doorway, the old man grabbed his cane. With a sense of purpose, he seemed to regain his strength and walked as steadily as ever.

When they reached Damien Sterling’s hospital room, Damien was still unconscious. Through the glass in the door, Riley could see Emma Hart inside, seemingly talking to herself, tears brimming in her eyes.

Riley followed Mr. Sterling Senior into the room. As soon as Emma saw him, she immediately stood up, nervous and unsure, stammering, "Uh, Mr. Sterling hasn’t woken up yet, but I’ve been talking to him."

Mr. Sterling Senior cut her off abruptly, "Come with me, I have something to say to you."

Emma shot a questioning look at Riley, but Riley, feeling guilty, avoided her gaze. Seeing the serious expression on Mr. Sterling Senior’s face, Emma knew she was in trouble. She meekly followed him out of the room, feeling his sharp gaze pierce through her, as if he could read her thoughts. As she got closer, every step made her legs feel weaker.

Emma greeted him respectfully, "Grandfather." Mr. Sterling Senior didn’t respond to the greeting. Instead, he asked, "Emma, how long have you been with our family?"

Emma’s heart raced, unsure of his intentions, but she answered politely, "Just under two years."

Supporting himself on his cane, Mr. Sterling Senior continued, "Then you must know that in these two years, you’ve brought nothing but disaster and trouble to the Sterling family. Not only that, you’ve been married for two years without producing an heir."

Caught off guard by such an accusation, Emma felt a pang of injustice and tried to defend herself, "But, it’s just that Mr. Sterling doesn’t want children yet, and I didn’t do anything on purpose."

Mr. Sterling Senior seemed to have achieved his goal. "Therefore, it’s time for you to step aside as the Sterling family’s daughter-in-law. Be sensible and leave the family now. Riley Turner can take good care of him and stay by his side."

Emma bit her lip, "I’m sorry, Grandfather, but I am Damien Sterling’s wife. As long as he doesn’t divorce me, I won’t leave him, especially not now."

Riley immediately chimed in, "Emma, don’t worry. Grandfather is just angry right now. Why don’t you go home for now? I’ll take care of Damien. Once Grandfather calms down, you can come back, alright?"

Emma’s eyes filled with bitterness as she stared at Riley, unable to believe that her friend would say such a thing. It was bad enough that the old man favored Riley, but now she was trying to take her husband too.

Seeing Emma’s hurt look, Riley felt a wave of mixed emotions, as if a storm was brewing inside her. But for the sake of the future... some sacrifices had to be made.

When Emma noticed Riley avoiding her gaze, something inside her sank. So this was all planned in advance—Mr. Sterling Senior, and her so-called good friend, Riley Turner.
