Chapter 458: Fainting

Chapter 458: Fainting

Emma Hart watched as Damien Sterling hurriedly fled, squinting her eyes with a smile.

She had never seen Damien Sterling like this before; he was actually kind of cute. Suddenly, she felt like she had found the right way to deal with Damien Sterling.

The warmth of the man’s fingers brushing over her scalp seemed to linger on the surface of her brain, driving away any remaining drowsiness. It was such a normal thing to do, but thinking about it made her cheeks flush.

When Damien Sterling walked out of the bedroom, he wasn’t sure what had come over him. Seeing her hair all wet, he had feared she might catch a cold and, almost instinctively, had helped blow-dry it for her.

The moment he was caught, he felt strangely guilty. Why was he afraid she would notice his gentleness? He immediately turned cold, threw the hairdryer at her, and walked out.

Shortly after, Damien Sterling came out again, convinced that Emma Hart must have cast a spell in that room. Otherwise, why would he have been so compelled to dry her hair to prevent her from catching a cold?

Not long after Damien left the room, the sound of the hairdryer started up again. After a while, it stopped, and Emma Hart, wearing slippers, came out, rubbing her sleepy eyes.

She looked at Damien Sterling, who was sitting on the couch watching TV. "I’m a little hungry. I’m thinking of cooking some noodles. Do you want some?"

Although Damien Sterling was staring at the TV, his mind was elsewhere. When the football star on screen scored a goal, and Emma Hart’s question broke his reverie, he quickly nodded without really hearing her. "Sure, sure."

Emma Hart walked towards the kitchen, stopping by the fridge to grab a tomato and two eggs. This was the only noodle dish she knew how to make, and she often cooked it for herself when she was hungry.

Hearing the sizzling sounds from the kitchen, Damien Sterling rubbed his stomach. After all that had happened, he was starting to feel hungry too. He stood up and headed to the kitchen.

Maybe he hadn’t fully recovered from the car accident, because when he stood up, he felt a brief wave of dizziness. But he didn’t think much of it. The smell coming from the kitchen was already making his mouth water.

Emma Hart looked at the tomato egg soup she had just made with satisfaction. The egg was perfectly silky and not overcooked, the tomato broth was a rich red, and the yellow strands of egg made it look very appetizing.

Now, all she had to do was wait for the water to boil to cook the noodles. She tidied up the tableware, preparing to bring them out, when she was startled by Damien Sterling standing silently at the doorway. She nearly dropped the bowl in her hand. "Do you always walk around so quietly? You scared me!"

Damien Sterling found Emma Hart’s pouting expression quite adorable. Ignoring the bowl, he pulled Emma Hart towards him and silenced her chattering mouth with a kiss.

Emma Hart’s eyes widened in disbelief, a muffled sound escaping her lips. Why didn’t Damien Sterling choose a better time or place for this? Her noodles weren’t even done yet.

Seeing her surprised expression, Damien Sterling bit down hard on her lip, as if to punish her, as if saying, "That’s for being naughty."

Emma Hart winced at the pain, glaring at Damien Sterling with a hint of resentment in her eyes. "I’m still cooking noodles, do you still want to eat?"

Damien Sterling didn’t respond, turning away to sit at the dining table, waiting for Emma Hart to bring the noodles. He blinked at her with an innocent look that left her with no room to complain.

Emma Hart was frustrated but seeing Damien Sterling like this left her with nothing to scold him for. She brought the noodles out, and the two of them ate in silence.

Suddenly, Damien Sterling spoke up, "Your noodles aren’t bad." For someone usually so sharp-tongued, this unexpected compliment made Emma Hart bury her face in her bowl, smiling happily.

Then, as if suddenly remembering something, Emma Hart looked up at the man across from her, hesitated for a moment, and finally said, "There’s nothing going on between Matthew Taylor and me. Those photos were a misunderstanding."

Even though Damien Sterling knew nothing had happened between them, hearing Emma Hart’s weak explanation still made his head throb momentarily. Pushing down all the discomfort, Damien Sterling responded unhappily, "If nothing happened, then there’s no need to talk about it."

Emma Hart felt a pang of grievance and said, "I was in a bad mood that day. He handed me a few tissues, but someone took those photos from certain angles and showed them to you."

Damien Sterling didn’t want to discuss the photos at all. Every time he thought about them, it made him furious. Even though he knew nothing had happened between them, he still couldn’t help but lash out.

Emma Hart fell silent, her eyes filled with embarrassment and disappointment. Why was Damien Sterling so unwilling to address the issue? Did he have so little trust in her?

Damien Sterling seemed to realize that his reaction had been a bit too extreme. He opened his mouth to say something but couldn’t get the words out. Instead, a sudden pain struck his head.

Damien Sterling felt his vision darken, his eyes growing heavy, as if he wanted to close them. He shook his head, trying to shake off the strange sensation, but his body swayed and he collapsed to the ground.

Emma Hart heard a thud and looked up to see Damien Sterling lying there. She immediately crouched down, shaking him, but got no response. She called out softly, "Damien Sterling, are you okay?"

When she still didn’t get a response, Emma Hart began to panic. Her whole body trembled as she fumbled for her phone, knowing she needed to call 911. Her fingers shook even more.

She clutched her bag, struggling to open the zipper. After finally getting it open a little, she quickly reached in to grab her phone, dialing the three-digit number with trembling hands.

Emma Hart felt a wave of guilt. Damien Sterling was still a patient—why had she provoked him? He had just been discharged from the hospital, and it was an early discharge at that.

She finally got through the call, her voice trembling with tears as she said, "Someone has fainted here... This is... a private villa."

It took several tries to get the address right. The ambulance arrived quickly, and Emma Hart went with Damien Sterling to the hospital. The butler had also notified Mr. Sterling Senior in a timely manner.

Mr. Sterling Senior arrived at the hospital around the same time. He immediately spotted Emma Hart sitting outside the operating room, her face pale. His expression darkened.

Emma Hart shrank back, feeling guilty.

Damien Sterling’s fainting was partly her fault.

Mr. Sterling Senior, however, didn’t acknowledge Emma Hart. With Damien Sterling lying in the operating room and Riley Turner by his side, trying to calm him down, he refrained from lashing out. But he shot a furious glare at Emma Hart, clearly intending to deal with her later.
