Chapter 39: Turning a New Leaf
Damien Sterling’s men, intimidated yet obliged to heed Emma Hart’s words, reluctantly stepped back.
Observing their nearly motionless stance, Emma realized persuasion was futile and made her way towards the kitchen.
Her gaze swept across the kitchen tools, lighting up at the sight of a juicer, its gleam catching her eye.
In the evening, Damien Sterling returned punctually, surprising even Mrs. Harris with his recent reduction in social engagements.
"Mr. Sterling is back," Mrs. Harris remarked cheerfully.
Ever since Emma waited for him on the couch that one time, he had been consistently timely in returning home.
Emma, who had been snacking on nuts all afternoon on the sofa, tidied up a bit upon hearing Damien’s arrival.
Damien walked upstairs without acknowledging Emma, who remained on the couch.
During dinner, Mrs. Harris joyfully placed a bowl of soup before Damien, saying, "Miss Emma had a good appetite today, she ate quite a bit."
Emma coughed softly, signaling Mrs. Harris to stop, though she knew it was well-intentioned, meant to inform Damien of her good behavior at home.
Damien nodded, "Fine, get her whatever she wants to eat, let her do as she pleases, just as long as there’s no trouble."
Hearing this, Emma put down her utensils, straightened up, and spoke, "Are you serious about that?"
"When have I ever gone back on my word?" Damien, without looking up at Emma, continued to taste each dish methodically.
Emma Hart exhaled deeply, "I’ve noticed a small patch of open ground outside this window. I’m quite bored here every day. I’d like to grow some flowers."
Damien Sterling paused momentarily upon hearing Emma’s request, his expression shifting subtly.
Had this woman finally come around? Just like any ordinary woman, nothing special – his assumptions never failed him.
Well, that’s fine.
The fleeting sense of loss in his eyes vanished. "Alright, tomorrow someone will accompany you to the flower market. Let me know if you need anything specific."
"Okay." Emma continued to eat, her joy hidden within, but she remained stoic, never letting her guard down around this man.
True to his word, the next day, Damien sent someone with Emma to the flower market.
Emma, along with Mrs. Harris, chose many plants, consulting her for every selection.
Mrs. Harris watched as several strong men sweated profusely under Emma’s commands, "Miss Emma, that’s probably enough. Tending to all these flowers daily will be a hassle, and look how tired they are."
Emma glanced at the men behind her, indeed drenched in sweat. "Standing still every day, a bit of exercise is good for them."
Emma chuckled softly, and Mrs. Harris also suppressed a smile.
As they continued through the market, Emma’s attention turned to some green plants. "Just flowers isn’t very appealing. We need some greenery for balance. These, I’ll take them too."
Stretching languidly, Emma murmured, "Well, I’m tired too. Mrs. Harris, let’s head back."
In the evening, Damien Sterling returned to find the small patch of land by the floor-to-ceiling window filled with vibrant flowers and plants arranged by Emma, a scene bursting with life that drew him in.
Standing at the window, he admired the view, bringing a sense of vitality to the otherwise lifeless villa.
"These flowers, did you water them all?" Damien asked, noticing the wet ground, his mind immediately leaping to this question.
