Chapter 40: Not So Dramatic
Emma Hart nodded; with nothing much to do that afternoon, she decided to water all the flowers, a pleasant way to pass the time.
Damien Sterling’s gaze swept over those around him, causing the men in black to instinctively lower their heads.
"Such tasks can be delegated to them in the future."
Emma noticed the men’s discomfort and defended them, "It was my choice to water them."
"I’m not supporting them for nothing," Damien said sharply, his attractive peach blossom eyes flashing. "That includes you."
Her? What did she have to do with this? She never asked for his support. He seemed to be mistaken; it was he who insisted on her staying.
Mrs. Harris, sensing Emma’s urge to speak, quickly interjected, "Sir, we’ll be more careful in the future."
With Mrs. Harris’s timely intervention, Emma felt an unresolved tension.
Mrs. Harris quickly stepped in front of her, tugging at her and shaking her head, signaling not to further provoke Damien.
Emma closed her mouth, swallowing her retort. Clearly, it was Damien who was being provocative.
Despite not seeing the sunrise, Emma had memorized the shape and color of the sun after 7 AM, her only solace during the tedious days, gazing upwards.
She still hadn’t gotten used to the emptiness of this house; she always felt uneasy here, especially when Damien was present.
Another day began, repetitive and dull as ever.
Emma, briefly engrossed in a magazine, was interrupted as Mrs. Harris took it from her hands, "Miss Emma, take a break."
Emma pouted. She wasn’t tired at all, but she knew she had no choice.
Gazing at the flowers outside the window, Emma Hart, having watered them just yesterday, found herself with little else to do. She rose to her feet, drawing the doors open, but before her hand could reach the watering can, a man in black approached.
"Miss Emma, are you going to water the plants?" he asked, his face etched with tension.
"Yes."
"Allow us to do it," he said, reaching for the watering can in Emma’s hand.
Emma stepped back slightly, causing the man to sweat profusely. They dared neither snatch the can from her nor allow her to water the plants.
"I can do it," Emma said stubbornly.
A gentle standoff ensued between them.
The man in black, helpless, looked towards Mrs. Harris for assistance. Smiling, Mrs. Harris approached and took the watering can from Emma, "Miss Emma, they’re just afraid of Mr. Sterling. They fear his punishment for any mistakes."
Emma, reasonable as she was, conceded to Mrs. Harris’s advice. After all, they were all under Damien Sterling’s thumb, comrades in the same trench.
"Then... I can at least go out and look at the flowers, right?"
Emma walked towards the small garden outside, with two men in black following closely behind.
Suddenly, she stopped, turned back with a hint of exasperation, and addressed them, "Look, there are trees over there, a fence here, and you can guard the only exit. Can’t you just wait for me there? Don’t follow so closely. I understand your position, but please, give me a bit of freedom, okay?"
The men exchanged glances. Seeing Emma’s firm tone, they reluctantly moved to a spot five meters away from her.
Emma bent over a particularly vibrant and lush plant, effectively concealing half of her body. With her hands lowered, she subtly snapped something from another plant. She glanced at the men in the distance; they hadn’t noticed her actions.
