Overbearing CEO's Contract Love
Chapter 38: Buying Flowers

Chapter 38: Buying Flowers

Dinner time.

At the long table, Mrs. Harris was meticulously setting out each dish.

Suddenly, Damien Sterling spoke up, "Did you contact your family? How did it go? Disappointed enough?"

Mrs. Harris, holding a dish, trembled slightly. Was there a mistake with today’s phone call? Was Damien going to blame her?

His tone, so flippant. Did the concept of family mean nothing in Damien’s eyes? Did he derive his happiness entirely from others’ pain?

It must have been her grandmother who told Damien about the call.

"Please, don’t send anything to them anymore," Emma Hart said decisively.

Perhaps without seeing any benefits, they might change, Emma still held a sliver of hope.

"Such naive thinking," Damien’s voice was a cold sneer, full of the disdain Emma found most irritating.

Damien Sterling, a natural at reading people’s minds, seemed to know Emma’s thoughts even without her voicing them.

"Human nature is just like this, selfish and greedy, even from your nearest and dearest. So, in this world, don’t trust anyone."

"If you stop bringing them benefits, their attitude towards you would be even worse than now, which is actually the best outcome."

Damien said, swirling the red wine in his glass, allowing the beautiful crimson liquid to ripple in the crystal goblet.

Damien had seen all the world’s cunning and deceit.

In his eyes, nothing mattered but profit; emotions were worthless.

This woman, however, showed him a hint of kindness, or perhaps, as he saw it, foolishness.

In the past few days, Damien hadn’t brought work home and hadn’t done anything out of line.

Emma Hart was gradually becoming less afraid of him.

At least now, she could share a bed with him.

Early in the morning.

After Mrs. Harris had breakfast, the two stern-faced men in black, who usually stayed outside, entered the house.

Their intimidating, unsmiling demeanor still made Emma Hart feel uneasy, as if she were in the midst of a mafia scene.

"Miss Emma, do you want anything special to eat? I’m going out for groceries, but..." Mrs. Harris glanced helplessly at the two men in black, "they will be here to watch over you."

Emma nodded in understanding, aware that this was Damien Sterling’s directive. "Mrs. Harris, I understand."

Before leaving, Mrs. Harris turned to the men with a note of concern, "Be gentle in whatever Miss Emma does. She won’t cause you trouble."

"After all, you can’t afford to be responsible for any mistake regarding her or the baby."

The two men exchanged looks and nodded, understanding the gravity of anything related to Damien Sterling.

Suddenly, Emma remembered something and called out to Mrs. Harris, "Oh, wait."

Mrs. Harris turned back immediately, "What is it?"

Emma smiled and, lowering her voice, stepped closer to Mrs. Harris.

"I haven’t had much appetite lately. Could you please buy me some hawthorn? And I’d like some nuts too, get a variety of them."

Hearing Emma’s request for food, Mrs. Harris was visibly delighted, quickly agreeing, "Of course, I’ll get you anything you like, as long as it gives you an appetite."

After Mrs. Harris left, Emma found herself followed step by step by the two men whenever she moved around the room.

After a few rounds, Emma suddenly stopped and sighed at them, "Do you think I’m going to sprout wings and fly away?"

"You don’t need to be so close to me, it’s oppressive. Mrs. Harris doesn’t hover over me like this every day."
