Chapter 358: Becoming Damien’s Assistant (1)
At dawn, Mrs. Harris was busy in the kitchen preparing breakfast when she heard the sound of Emma Hart’s lazy yawn coming from the second floor.
"Ah... good morning, Mrs. Harris," Emma said, standing at the top of the stairs in her soft fleece pajamas, stretching with a big yawn.
Mrs. Harris poked her head out of the kitchen and asked, "Emma? Why are you up so early?" She still had no idea about the tricky contract Emma had signed with Damien Sterling.
"I’m starting as Mr. Sterling’s personal assistant today, so I need to get ready early," Emma replied, still groggy, holding onto the wall for support as she made her way downstairs.
"Well, good luck, Emma," Mrs. Harris encouraged her.
The assistant manual Damien Sterling had prepared for her was quite the nightmare: ironing his clothes by six in the morning, ensuring that no outfit was repeated within two weeks; preparing a homemade lunch since he refused to eat out, with the menu left to her discretion. And the most important rule: she couldn’t leave Damien Sterling’s sight without permission. It felt less like being a personal assistant and more like being his nanny!
"Mrs. Harris, please help take care of the kids while I’m busy. If there’s anything, just call me," Emma instructed.
"Don’t worry, I’ll stay with them every moment," Mrs. Harris assured her.
To ensure the assistant plan went smoothly, Damien Sterling had even assigned two long-term family bodyguards to help Mrs. Harris and watch over the kids. Besides Mrs. Harris, no one else could get close to them.
After freshening up and getting dressed, Emma hurriedly ate breakfast and began preparing lunch for both Damien and herself.
Today’s menu was simple but nutritious: fruit salad, white rice, stir-fried beef with green peppers, and steamed broccoli. Emma was quite pleased with the balanced meal she had prepared.
Barely taking a moment to rest, Emma rushed upstairs again to pick out Damien Sterling’s outfit for the day.
In the dressing room, Emma Hart flicked on the light.
"Oh my God..." It was her first time in Damien Sterling’s walk-in closet. Four large wardrobes lined the walls, each dedicated to a different season’s attire: spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Normally, Damien grabbed his clothes from the bedroom wardrobe, which the servants regularly restocked from this massive collection. His clothes were primarily black and white, making it nearly impossible for Emma to distinguish one piece from another.
"Whatever! You’ll do!" Emma muttered, randomly pulling an outfit from the spring section and setting it on the ironing board to get to work.
With only ten minutes left before Damien’s wake-up time, Emma quickly finished her preparations and collapsed onto the living room sofa.
"Ugh, I haven’t moved this much in ages. It feels like I’ve been hit by a truck," she sighed, reflecting on the past three hours of laborious effort.
After resting for a moment, she glanced at the clock. Only three minutes left before the demon king himself was due to wake.
"Oh right!" Emma suddenly remembered that Damien had asked her to wake him up this morning. She quickly dashed upstairs, pausing at the bedroom door to catch her breath, then knocked softly before entering.
The bedroom felt like another world entirely. The only sound was Damien Sterling’s deep, steady breathing. A single beam of sunlight crept into the dim room, stretching towards his feet, as if attempting to disrupt his peaceful slumber.
Emma tiptoed to Damien’s side, gently shook his arm, and whispered, "Damien Sterling, Damien Sterling, it’s time to wake up."
"Mmm." Damien turned from his side onto his back, showing no sign of opening his eyes.
"Hey! Get up already, or you’ll be late." Emma Hart’s voice carried the tone of a mother trying to rouse a reluctant child for school.
Why is Damien Sterling acting so out of character today? He never stayed in bed this long. Emma felt a surge of confusion.
"Hey! Damien Sterling!" She raised her voice another notch. Just as the words left her mouth, Damien grabbed her slender hand and pulled her into his embrace.
"Hmph!" Damien smirked, his eyes half-closed with a mischievous glint. "Good morning, wifey," he greeted her in a clear, teasing voice.
"You’re already awake?" Emma’s eyes widened in surprise. She suddenly realized that this man had been awake all along, just playing with her!
"What do you think?" Damien chuckled, his strong arms tightening around Emma, who was now lying in his arms.
"Alright, stop messing around. Get up and have breakfast," Emma said, gently rubbing his soft short hair and slowly prying his arms away.
His scent was intoxicating; the fragrance of last night’s shower gel still lingered on his skin.
"Alright, I’m up!" Damien sat up suddenly, giving Emma a quick, butterfly-light kiss on the lips before they both got out of bed.
"Where are my clothes, Assistant Hart?" Damien asked, a playful glint in his eyes.
"I’ll get them right away!" Emma dashed to the dressing room to retrieve the freshly ironed clothes.
Watching her hurried retreat, Damien felt a sweetness he couldn’t quite describe. This game was just too enjoyable.
"Here are your clothes!" Emma announced, standing behind Damien as he finished washing up.
"Alright, bring it on!" Damien dried his face with a towel and then turned to Emma, a mischievous smile on his face and a playful tone in his voice. "Help me dress."
With that, Damien stepped out of the bathroom, raising his muscular arms in a mock helpless gesture.
"You!" Emma wanted to throw the clothes at him and walk away, but seeing his tilted head and wicked grin, she knew if she did, he’d find even more annoying ways to bother her. She sighed and resigned herself to the task.
"That’s more like it!" Damien said, satisfied with her compliance.
She only helped him with his shirt; Damien handled his pants on his own.
"Grab my briefcase from the table and head downstairs," Damien instructed.
"Okay." Emma picked up the briefcase and went downstairs.
In the dining room, Mrs. Harris had prepared a western-style breakfast, while the lunch Emma had made earlier was also ready.
Emma sat on the sofa, feeding the baby and reminding them to be good while she was away.
