Chapter 35: A Nightmarish Night
Emma Hart spoke urgently, "Wait a moment."
Seeing Damien Sterling halt his motion to stand, Emma continued, "I don’t want to recall that night. It was a nightmare for me, a mistake. I don’t want that mistake to continue."
"Everyone has the right to pursue love. I’m not sure how you, Mr. Sterling, view love and marriage, but to me, they are the purest things that should exist only for one reason – love."
"Without love, marriage can’t stand alone. Without it, neither of us will be happy. Every step in life will be as arduous as passing through trials. This can’t be what you want either, Mr. Sterling."
A moment of silence followed.
Emma gazed at Damien, whose face remained expressionless.
She yearned for some sign of emotion from him, knowing she was no match for him. Her only recourse was to reason with him.
But she had underestimated the man’s heart of stone.
A look of disdain flickered in Damien’s eyes. Looking up at Emma’s sincere face, he let out a mocking smile, "Are you done?"
Clearly, Damien was unmoved.
A new tactic? It seemed Emma was once again overdramatizing her role.
Damien Sterling didn’t need Emma Hart to lecture him about love.
To him, love was not a necessity for life.
Who he was with didn’t matter to Damien; his only concern was the Sterling Group.
Emma was overestimating her importance.
His cold, mocking tone pierced Emma’s ears.
"Mr. Sterling..."
"I want you to go to bed now, immediately," Damien commanded icily.
"Don’t you have any desire for love at all? Our union will only destroy you, destroy me," Emma said passionately.
Rising from the sofa, Damien Sterling’s patience had worn thin.
He sighed, exuding an arrogant air, commanding like a king as he spoke firmly to Emma Hart, "Nothing can destroy me. As for whether you are destroyed, that’s irrelevant."
Turning his back to Emma, he walked towards the stairs, casually adding, "If I don’t see you upstairs in five minutes, I’ll come and carry you up."
"You..." Emma’s voice was filled with irritation, yet she felt helpless.
Hearing her angry response, Damien found her frustration amusing, almost rejuvenating amidst his fatigue.
Her indignant demeanor was something he enjoyed.
Like taming a little wildcat, which he loved the most.
Suddenly, Damien spun around, "So, you want me to carry you up now?"
His mischievous, roguish smirk filled Emma with dread, and she instinctively leaned back, "I... I can go up by myself."
"Good."
This tactic always worked on her.
Emma watched Damien’s retreating figure, realizing how foolish she had been to try reasoning with him, to appeal to his emotions.
Thinking back on all he had done to her, how could he possibly heed her logic?
With such disregard for love and marriage, Emma cursed him to never find true love.
Five minutes later, standing at the door of another room, Mrs. Harris pointed towards Damien’s room, "The sir wants you in his room."
Emma sighed, resigning herself to walk towards Damien Sterling’s room.
