Chapter 34: Cursing Him
"Miss Emma, look how adorable that child is," Mrs. Harris said, her eyes filled with tenderness as she watched a child playing joyfully with its mother, hoping to stir Emma Hart’s affection for children.
"Mrs. Harris, I suddenly feel tired. Let’s go back," Emma said, her expression forlorn as she turned to leave.
Mrs. Harris’s face fell, her joy fading.
She knew all too well that Emma’s fatigue wasn’t physical but emotional, a reluctance to witness the happy scene before her.
Mrs. Harris followed Emma Hart, speaking in a hushed tone, "You know, Miss Emma, affection can indeed be nurtured. Look at us – we married having barely met a few times and have spent a lifetime together."
Emma’s lips curved into a faint smile, her only response, as she remained silent.
She was aware of Mrs. Harris’s reference to a time of arranged marriages, but she didn’t want to live under the constraints of that era’s mindset.
In her time, Emma believed everyone should yearn to live with the person they truly loved.
That should be the case for everyone, she thought.
Under Mrs. Harris’s careful attention, the day passed peacefully.
In the spacious living room, large enough but with only Mrs. Harris and Emma for company, the house felt overly quiet despite the few pieces of furniture.
Emma mused that perhaps Damien Sterling’s distant demeanor was a match for the villa’s chilly atmosphere.
The antique clock on the table ticked steadily, its hands pointing to "10".
Finally, there was a sound at the door.
If not for the strained relationship between them, Emma, at that moment, might have resembled a devoted wife waiting for her husband’s return.
Damien Sterling’s suit was as immaculate as ever, showing no signs of weariness even after a day’s toil.
Mrs. Harris took Damien Sterling’s coat and subtly gestured towards Emma Hart, who was still waiting in the living room.
Damien gave a slight nod, and Mrs. Harris immediately understood, retreating to her room.
Damien walked into the living room, where Emma had shifted from lying down to sitting up.
Her pregnant state was evidently taking its toll, and waiting up until now had pushed her to her limit.
Despite Mrs. Harris’s attempts to persuade her to rest earlier, Emma had steadfastly refused.
Standing before her, Damien’s gaze was stern, almost as if his eyes never truly rested on Emma.
"Why aren’t you asleep?" His voice was deep, laced with a trace of fatigue.
Emma’s tongue briefly flicked over her lips, then she bit them, her hands nervously fidgeting with her nightgown.
This unintentional action caught Damien’s eye, her casual movements somehow unsettling him, causing his lips to quiver slightly.
Finally, Emma spoke, "I want to talk to you."
"Oh?" Damien’s gaze on Emma deepened, filled with intensity and gravity.
He then moved to sit on the couch in front of her, but Emma instinctively flinched at his sudden proximity.
Afraid of him? That was right.
This was the effect Damien wanted - her submission and compliance, making things easier for him.
"We can’t get married," Emma said bluntly, the words seeming to cross a century’s gap before finally emerging from her lips.
The man’s face darkened, his response cold, "That’s not for you to decide."
The same old argument. Damien had no time to engage in idle chatter. Saying this, he prepared to rise.
