Chapter 33: Watching Over Her All Night
Damien Sterling raised his hand in a gesture, "You can go rest."
Mrs. Harris hesitated, surprised.
Was the sir planning to take care of her personally?
Without further questioning, Mrs. Harris said, "Call me if you need anything."
Damien took the medicine from Mrs. Harris’s hand and gently propped Emma Hart up on the bed.
Her consciousness was still clouded.
Her already slender face had grown thinner from the days of struggle against him, highlighting her prominent cheekbones.
Her eyelashes fluttered slightly, wet with tears, looking pitiful.
Why did he have to oppose her like this? If only she could be a bit softer, more compliant, he would have showered her with affection.
But she always seemed ungrateful, speaking another man’s name even after being with him. Why?
A feeble voice came from Emma’s lips.
Damien, annoyed, was about to force the medicine into her mouth, but his action of pouring water wasn’t as rough as he intended.
Instead, he let the water flow gently into her cherry lips.
Damien had never cared for anyone before.
He awkwardly wrung the towel, still damp after his attempt. With a look of disgust, he tried again, this time more successfully.
Then, he tenderly brushed the hair from Emma’s forehead and placed the towel there.
His movements were slow and gentle.
For once, Emma was quiet, no longer uttering any sounds that irked him.
Outside the window, the sun peeked out, and birds landed on the branches, heralding a bright early morning.
Inside, Emma slowly opened her eyes to see the figure bent over her.
Who was it?
She removed the towel from her head and noticed the thermometer and medicine on the table.
She had a fever?
Then she saw the man before her – Damien Sterling?
How could that be?
Emma propped herself up, feeling surprisingly less discomfort. Her body felt much lighter.
The sound startled Damien Sterling.
Lifting his head, Damien swept a glance at Emma Hart, rotating his stiff neck.
Judging by her appearance, her fever seemed to have subsided.
Still not entirely convinced, he took the thermometer and pressed it against Emma’s forehead – 37.5°C, a normal temperature.
His gaze lingered on Emma, whose eyes darted around, avoiding his.
Just then, Mrs. Harris entered. "Sir, you’ve been up all night. You should rest."
"The temperature is normal. Have the doctor come for another check," Damien instructed indifferently before leaving the room.
Even Mrs. Harris mentioned it – had he really stayed by her side the entire night?
Why would he do that?
Apart from concern, what other reason could there be?
Emma gently touched her stomach, pondering. Yes, there was also him.
"Miss Emma, the sir does care for you. He stayed with you all night," Mrs. Harris said, trying to ease the tension between them.
But Emma wasn’t interested in these conciliatory gestures.
For the next few days, Emma obediently followed Damien’s orders, eating regularly and completing the tasks he set for her.
In turn, Damien didn’t bother her during this time, allowing life to proceed quietly.
His restrictions on Emma had loosened somewhat.
At Mrs. Harris’s request, Damien allowed Emma to walk around the neighborhood, accompanied by Mrs. Harris and a bodyguard.
One day, sitting in the garden, Emma watched a family playing happily together.
A child would rush into its mother’s arms and then grab its father’s hand.
This heartwarming scene made Emma feel a pang of sadness.
Her hand rested on her stomach, her eyes filled with worry.
