Chapter 337: We Can Only Belong to Each Other
Emma Hart, though terrified of being alone with elders, had no choice but to accompany Damien Sterling to meet Mrs. Harrington.
Mrs. Harrington had insisted they join her in confronting Logan, and Emma, anxious as ever, could only comply.
The journey was nerve-wracking; Emma was so tense that she barely dared to breathe.
Damien, observing her kitten-like timidity, couldn’t help but recall how free-spirited and playful she was at home. The stark contrast amused him. If not for Logan’s grandmother, he might never have seen this adorable side of his little wildcat. Perhaps he should be grateful to Logan, after all.
"If that’s the case, maybe I should give Logan a hand," Damien thought.
From an omniscient perspective, one could see Emma sitting rigidly like a schoolgirl, trying not to draw any attention. However, she stealthily reached under Damien’s flamboyant tailored suit and pinched him. Damien, struggling to suppress his laughter, winced as if stung by a bee, his face contorting comically.
Emma’s unexpected outburst of laughter drew immediate attention, causing her to hastily cover her mouth. But it was too late.
"Damien’s wife," Mrs. Harrington called out, startling Emma into sitting up straight, legs together, hands neatly on her knees, like a model student. Damien couldn’t help but laugh again.
"Grandma, her name is Emma," Damien interjected, deciding to help his wife out a bit. After all, if he didn’t support her now, Emma might insist on separate bedrooms again once they got home. The thought of sleeping alone in the guest room was unbearable. But the affectionate smile on his lips didn’t escape Mrs. Harrington’s notice.
"Emma, don’t young people today avoid having kids in their early twenties? How come you have two boys already?" Mrs. Harrington asked, curious to understand the young woman whom the formidable Damien Sterling doted on so much.
"Uh, Madison, I..." Emma stammered, unsure how to respond. Should she explain that she was tricked by a so-called friend into a one-night stand with Damien, which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy and their subsequent relationship? Or should she simply say that things happened, and now they had two children together? Emma was at a loss for words.
"Madison, Emma is still young, but I’m not getting any younger. I wanted children, and Emma agreed to have one for me. I never expected to be so fortunate that she gave me two healthy boys at once," Damien Sterling said, knowing exactly what Emma Hart was feeling. This woman was so troublesome; she still couldn’t face their relationship head-on. Looks like tonight, he would need to have a serious talk with her.
"Is that so, Emma?" Mrs. Harrington questioned, turning her gaze to Emma. She hadn’t expected the usually aloof and unapproachable Damien Sterling to be so protective of a woman. He must truly love her.
"Yes, Madison, I love him very much," Emma replied, glancing at Damien with eyes full of affection. Seeing her gaze, Damien’s heart nearly melted. Emma’s thoughts drifted to her own grandmother, a woman who valued money above all else and never saw her as a granddaughter, but rather a tool for making money. In her grandmother’s eyes, only her brother and money mattered. Damien, however, had given Emma warmth, familial love, affection, trust, and endless adoration she had never known.
"Madison, we’re almost there. Last night, Amelia Davidson seemed ill, so Logan Harrington brought her here to rest," Damien quickly changed the subject, noticing Emma was on the verge of tears. Better to intercept that.
"Call Logan Harrington and tell him to come out. If he doesn’t, Amelia Davidson will never set foot in Harrington Global Enterprises again!" Mrs. Harrington demanded, her voice filled with authority.
"Alright, I’ll get him," Damien responded, thinking to himself that his friend was in deep trouble. Logan would have to deal with this on his own.
"Grandma, Amelia fell ill last night. I stayed up late taking care of her, so I brought her here to rest. I didn’t want to disturb your fun," Logan said, quickly apologizing as he approached Mrs. Harrington, massaging her shoulders and smiling.
"Oh, really? Then why didn’t you answer my call this morning? Did your phone fall ill and need your care too?" Mrs. Harrington retorted, unimpressed by Logan’s attempts to appease her, determined to get to the bottom of the matter.
"Madison, Logan left in a hurry last night and forgot his phone with me. I was having so much fun that I forgot to tell you. He didn’t ignore your call on purpose," Damien jumped in to help, thinking it best to cover for Logan once more.
Logan looked at Damien with a mixture of gratitude and resignation, realizing he owed his friend yet another favor.
"Logan Harrington, bring Amelia Davidson and come inside!" Mrs. Harrington didn’t want to hear any more excuses; she wanted to question them directly.
"Yes, Grandma," Logan replied respectfully.
"Logan, are you serious about this? You know the kind of women who want to get into Harrington Global Enterprises. Besides, she’s much older than you," Mrs. Harrington’s tone was severe as she interrogated Logan.
"I know Amelia is older, Grandma, but I love her. I only want her. I know what kind of woman she is. Even if she wants my money, I would give it to her without hesitation. I just want her, and she can only be mine," Logan answered with a mix of deference and firmness. Mrs. Harrington knew her grandson well enough to recognize that he was utterly resolute; he would marry no one but Amelia.
Outside, Emma Hart and Damien Sterling were both anxious about the outcome of Mrs. Harrington’s interrogation. They worried about how the formidable matriarch would treat Amelia, one of the few people who had genuinely cared for Emma.
"Emma, in the car, you said... you said you loved me. Did you mean it? Say it again," Damien’s voice trembled slightly. He knew Logan well enough to be certain that once he made up his mind, not even Mrs. Harrington could change it. But his thoughts lingered on Emma’s reaction in the car. She had never confessed her love for him so directly before. Was it a genuine expression of her feelings, or had she been cornered into saying it by Mrs. Harrington’s probing?
