Chapter 338: I Am Your Family
He was uncertain and needed a definite answer. He had to ask once more.
"Emma, I love you."
"Damian Sterling, I love you too."
Mrs. Harrington’s questioning seemed to have accepted this granddaughter-in-law. After a fun-filled day, they were ready to head back.
"Sis, sis. Come back quickly, Mom’s in critical condition, sis!" Emma Hart suddenly received a call from her brother, Max, who was crying and telling her their mother was gravely ill. The chaotic noise from the other end sent chills down Emma’s spine.
"Max, don’t panic. Get Mom to the hospital immediately. I’ll be there soon." Hanging up, Emma urgently called for the driver to take her to the hospital.
At the hospital, she discovered the true extent of her mother’s suffering. After their grandmother fell ill, her mother had been tirelessly taking care of everything at home—cooking, cleaning, worrying about Emma and Max, and trying to make ends meet. Her hands were chapped and red from the cold winter work, and her already frail health finally gave in under the strain. The realization of her mother’s struggles filled Emma with deep sorrow. She had been so focused on her own life and love with Damian Sterling that she had neglected her mother, leading to this moment of crisis. Tears flowed uncontrollably.
"Emma, don’t be afraid. I’m here. Your mother will be okay," Damian suddenly appeared, enveloping her in a warm embrace, making her feel an unexpected sense of comfort and security.
"Find the best doctors in the world for her! If they can’t save her, you’ll all be buried with her!" Damian barked orders at the medical staff while soothing Emma.
Outside the critical care unit, Emma couldn’t stop crying, and Damian patiently comforted her.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Sterling. We did everything we could... Mrs. Hart, she..." The doctor stammered, but Emma could hardly hear anything, her mind buzzing. All she caught was "sorry," and her tears flowed freely as she broke down in despair.
"Do you want me to bury you all with her?!" Damian, heartbroken by Emma’s devastation, roared at the doctors.
"Mr. Sterling, we really did our best. Mrs. Hart’s condition is due to prolonged overwork. It didn’t happen overnight. We found that the cancer cells in her brain have spread to her lymph nodes. At most, she has a month left..." The lead surgeon’s voice grew fainter and fainter, almost disappearing as he bowed lower and lower.
"If you can’t save her, you’ll never practice medicine again!" Damian Sterling erupted once more, like a lion, his fury so intense that the doctor nearly collapsed to his knees.
"Let them go, Damian. I want to see my mother," Emma Hart suddenly stopped crying and quietly uttered these words.
"I want to see my mother. Damian, let them go."
"Get out!" Damian Sterling roared again.
"Be careful. I’ll go with you to see your mother," Damian Sterling gently supported the now-standing Emma Hart. His voice, so tender, contrasted sharply with his earlier fury, as if he were a different person altogether.
"Okay."
In the ICU, Emma approached her mother. "Mom, how are you? I’m so sorry, Mom. It’s all my fault, all my fault, Mom." The moment she saw her mother, Emma’s tears fell uncontrollably, her words tumbling out incoherently.
"Child, it’s not your fault. I’m fine. Don’t blame yourself. I’m just happy you found Mr. Sterling. He’s good to you, and that gives me peace. You both must take care of each other," Emma’s mother spoke weakly.
"Bring the children over," Damian Sterling said, comforting the mother and daughter. He pressed the intercom to have their two children brought in. Soon, the children arrived.
"Say hello to Grandma," Damian Sterling, holding a child in each arm, approached Emma’s mother.
"Grandma..." The children’s voices, sweet and elongated, lifted the spirits in the room.
"Good children, very good. Stay loving always. I’m tired now. You should all go home," Emma’s mother said.
"Mom, you rest well. I’ll get you something to eat and take care of you here," Emma Hart wiped her tears and turned to leave.
"Emma, I’ll arrange for the best care for Mom. You don’t need to worry. You need to rest too. You haven’t had a proper rest since we returned from the island. Go freshen up, and leave this to me," Damian Sterling gently stopped Emma.
"Alright."
"Take Mrs. Sterling home and bring the best caregiver here."
"Say goodbye to Grandma."
"Goodbye, Grandma..." The children’s sweet voices once again brought a touch of warmth to the somber atmosphere.
Returning home, Emma Hart couldn’t find any peace or rest, knowing her mother was lying in a hospital bed. She immediately asked Mrs. Harris to prepare a bowl of silver ear and bird’s nest soup to take to her mother.
Reflecting on how her mother had worked tirelessly for her and her brother since they were children, Emma’s heart ached. Her father had passed away early, leaving her mother to shoulder all the burdens of the household alone. Her brother was still immature, and their grandmother often made things difficult for her mother. Her mother had endured so much hardship in her lifetime. The tears welled up and spilled over as these thoughts flooded her mind.
Emma covered her face and wept, the importance of family weighing heavily on her heart. Her mother was the closest person she had left. If her mother passed away, how would she cope? She couldn’t stop the sobs that racked her body.
At that moment, Damian Sterling came home. Seeing Emma crouched like a forlorn kitten, his heart wrenched. He had never seen his woman in such despair. He couldn’t bear to see her this way.
"Emma, your mother will be alright. Trust me, I will find the best doctors for her. You need to be strong. Your mother still needs us to care for her. If you collapse from sorrow, what will happen to our children? Right?" Damian gently lifted Emma and sat her on the couch, soothing her carefully.
"Emma, I will always be your lover, your family, the most important person in your life." Damian’s words were like a tender murmur as he repeatedly assured her, "I am your family, your important person."
One month later.
