Chapter 32: The Protector
Exiting the room, Damien Sterling passed by Mrs. Harris, who stood aside, waiting.
Only when he was several steps away did she rush into the room, only to find, to her astonishment, that Emma Hart was laboriously holding a bowl and eating on her own.
Mrs. Harris, overjoyed, hurried over to take the bowl and began feeding Emma. "Miss Emma, you’re finally eating. What did he do to convince you?"
Emma’s expression was tinged with embarrassment.
Mrs. Harris quickly understood. "No matter the method, it’s good that you’re eating."
Emma ate slowly, spoonful by spoonful, the food Mrs. Harris offered.
What method did Damien Sterling use? He surely wouldn’t resort to Ethan Turner’s tactics.
Even if he did, she wouldn’t accept it.
Damien Sterling had his unique ways.
Emma was genuinely hungry and had come to a realization.
She couldn’t afford to die; she had to live.
She didn’t believe a man like Damien Sterling would spare her family after her death.
He would surely redirect his anger towards them. Dying would be the most irresponsible action towards her family.
Since she had chosen, or rather been forced to choose, to live, she couldn’t just exist passively.
She needed to preserve her strength to confront Damien Sterling.
Although her power to resist was minimal, she couldn’t allow him to trample over her without any resistance.
She had to eat, and eat more.
With this thought, Emma took the bowl from Mrs. Harris’s hands and began to eat more earnestly.
Mrs. Harris watched, relieved, feeling a weight lifted from her heart.
In the kitchen, Damien Sterling stood behind Mrs. Harris. "Did she eat?"
"Sir, she did, all of it. Miss Emma ate everything. Your method really worked."
Damien scoffed coldly. His method, the one she feared most, was also his last resort.
In the middle of the night, a commotion stirred once again in the Sterling family mansion.
Mrs. Harris knocked on Damien’s door urgently. "Sir, it’s not good. Miss Emma, she’s got a fever."
Awakened by the noise outside, Damien, who had been sleeping lightly these past few days, always subconsciously worried about something.
Damien quickly called his private doctor and followed Mrs. Harris to Emma Hart’s room.
Emma was burning up, her mind hazy and consciousness unclear.
She was muttering something continuously, and as Damien leaned closer to her lips, he heard her calling out a man’s name, "Ethan Turner..."
Such a foolish woman, the silliest in the world.
Why did she still yearn for that man who played her for a fool along with her best friend, and here she was, suffering yet calling out his name.
A sudden anger surged within Damien, an annoyance he couldn’t place, and he really didn’t want to deal with her.
"Sir, the doctor is here."
The private doctor, always on call and well-compensated by the Sterling family, began examining Emma.
After a few minutes, Damien, already losing patience, demanded, "What’s going on?"
"Sir, did Miss Emma eat today?"
Mrs. Harris nodded. "She ate quite a lot."
The doctor frowned slightly. "It seems her body is reacting to suddenly eating after days of starvation. The fever is a response to that, nothing serious. With careful observation through the night, the fever should subside. She needs to gradually resume eating."
"You stay here," Damien ordered.
The private doctor, noticing Damien’s anger, nodded without hesitation.
Mrs. Harris brought over medicine prescribed by the doctor, along with several wet towels.
Looking at the exhausted Damien, she suggested, "Sir, let me stay here and take care of her."
