Chapter 229: He Drove Off Alone

Chapter 229: He Drove Off Alone

Damien Sterling handed his phone to an assistant and turned his attention back to Emma Hart, who had just slipped into the car. Surprisingly, Damien didn’t follow her inside. Instead, he closed the door firmly after her .

Inside the car, Emma, her face a mix of confusion and surprise, rolled down the window and called out, "What are you doing?"

"Take her home." Damien Sterling ordered the driver.

"You?" Emma leaned out, gazing at Damien.

Bathed in the fading sunlight, Damien’s features glowed under the soft light, strands of his hair catching the warm hues of the setting sun. His skin shone beautifully, his fine pores enviable, and his well-defined facial features were accentuated by the golden hour. His tall figure looked even more striking as Emma watched him, her heart a little captivated.

The thought of him spending the evening with someone else made her unexpectedly reluctant to let him go. "I’m taking another car," Damien said with a wave of his hand before the driver accelerated away, leaving Emma to stare through the rear window at his receding figure.

As Damien turned and walked towards the garage, his silhouette stretched long in the slanting light. Inside the car, Emma’s frustration grew as she watched his decisive departure. Was he trying to distance himself from her?

Anger surged within her, and without thinking, she snapped at the driver, "Stop the car! Stop the car!"

The driver, caught in a difficult position and seeing Emma’s inflamed temper through the rearview mirror, hesitated. "Miss Emma, I’m not sure that would be wise," he ventured cautiously, bound by Damien’s instructions yet aware of her close relationship with him.

Unmoved by the driver’s concern, Emma insisted, "Stop the car, I’m telling you! He can’t control me! Just stop!"

The driver slowed down but continued to try to reason with her, "Miss Emma, it’s getting cold outside. You should really head home. Otherwise, Mr. Sterling will worry about you."

"Who needs his worry?" Emma turned her head away, her voice firm and resolute. "I want to stop. I’ll handle the rest myself. You can call him after I get out if you must."

Seeing the driver’s hesitation, Emma Hart’s tone became even more assertive. "If you don’t stop the car right now, I’ll jump out. If something happens to me, Damien Sterling will still come after you!"

The driver, wary of her boldness in using Damien Sterling’s full name, realized he couldn’t bear the consequences of an accident. Slowly, he pulled the car over to the side of the road.

"Miss Emma, please be careful," the driver said politely. "I won’t call Mr. Sterling. Go and come back quickly."

After the car came to a stop, Emma muttered an acknowledgment and exited the vehicle.

As she watched the car drive away, Emma felt a pang of regret. Where was she supposed to go now? It would have been better to just stay home. Now, out in the cold, the chilling wind forced her to wrap herself tighter in her coat—a coat Damien had wrapped around her earlier to ward off the cold. Now, abandoned, she realized she could only rely on herself.

Meanwhile, in the departing car, the driver glanced in the rearview mirror before dialing a number, forgetting his promise not to call Damien. "Hello, Mr. Sterling, Miss Emma insisted I stop the car. She threatened to jump out if I didn’t. I had no choice..."

"Alright, I understand," Damien responded with a slight frown before hanging up.

Beside him, Sophia Greenwood was getting ready for a rare opportunity to attend a banquet with Damien. Eager to shine as Damien’s companion at the event, Sophia leaned towards him, her voice tinged with a bashful excitement. "Damien, dear, what outfit are you changing into? Have you picked out your clothes? Should we go pick up the suit you had tailored?"

Sophia’s careful attention was not just about looking good for Damien but also a statement to anyone who coveted him, making it clear that only she, Sophia Greenwood, was the right match for Damien Sterling.

Leveraging her family’s past favors to the Sterling clan, Sophia Greenwood had always had a bold sense of entitlement—especially as Damien Sterling’s grandfather had doted on her. In this complex relationship, Sophia often acted as she pleased.

Damien Sterling, focused on his phone screen, barely acknowledged Sophia. "I’ll wear this one," he stated distractedly.

"This one?" Sophia expressed her surprise. While there was nothing wrong with what Damien was currently wearing, it wasn’t new—did he really not care enough to dress up for tonight’s event?

"What’s wrong?" Damien asked coldly, his face showing annoyance as he held the phone, still connected. His sharp, hawk-like eyes silenced Sophia, who quickly muttered, "Nothing... nothing at all."

It was then that Sophia noticed the name on Damien’s screen—Emma Hart. That name struck her like a harsh light, stirring irritation as she realized that even now, Damien’s thoughts lingered on that woman.

Damien dialed Emma’s number, but after several rings with no answer, he cursed under his breath, "Does this woman want to die?"

Sophia, however, sensed a deep concern in Damien’s words for Emma. What spell had this woman cast on him?

Meanwhile, on the streets, Emma Hart wandered alone, shivering from the cold. Seeing the incoming call on her phone, she hung up with a defiant, "Reject! Hmph!" Stowing her phone back in her pocket, it continued to buzz persistently.

With each step, Emma muttered curses directed at Damien, "That’s for walking away so quickly!"

"Keep calling if you dare!"

As call after call went unanswered, Damien, surprisingly patient, was unaware that back in his car, his temper was near breaking—nearly ready to tear Emma apart for her silence.

Damien repeatedly dialed from the car, not stopping until they arrived at the evening’s venue—a villa nestled on a hillside. The estate, hosting tonight’s gathering, was jam-packed with luxury cars, resembling an expo. Amid the sea of vehicles, Damien’s car shone the brightest, sharp lines drawing everyone’s attention.

Inside the car, Sophia adjusted her attire, preparing to step out and receive the guests’ adulation.
