Chapter 230: Fifteen Missed Calls

Chapter 230: Fifteen Missed Calls

And at this moment, Damien Sterling appeared nonchalant, prompting Sophia Greenwood to reach out and tug at his arm to gain his attention. Damien tried calling again, but still, no one answered. He worriedly wondered, "What is she doing out there in the cold not answering her phone?"

Sophia glanced at Damien, tugging at him again, her face earnest and slightly pleading. "Damien, darling, there are so many people outside; shall we go down first?" She feared being left alone and embarrassed if Damien decided to leave her behind in pursuit of Emma.

It was not an unlikely scenario; throughout their journey, Damien hadn’t really looked at Sophia, his focus fixed on his phone instead.

When Damien didn’t respond, Sophia stepped forward and playfully chided, "Oh, Damien, dear, maybe she’s off with another man. Why worry about her? Is she worth it?" After saying this, Sophia looked at Damien with a mixture of feigned hurt and expectation.

Damien slightly raised his eyebrows. Was his concern for Emma that obvious to others?

This annoyed him.

Turning away in the dimly lit car, Damien’s angular face remained sharply defined, his handsomeness tinged with a roguish charm. Despite his perfect, almost unapproachable appearance, a certain coldness lingered on his face, which intimidated Sophia. Clutching her clutch tightly, Sophia wondered what she might have said wrong. After all, it was normal for a woman to vent occasionally.

With her head bowed, biting her lip softly, Sophia spoke in a low voice, wary of irritating Damien further, "Damien, darling, I..."

Suddenly, Damien let out a cold laugh, dismissing the concerns about Emma. Why should he care so much if she preferred the company of other men?

"Are you ready?" Damien finally spoke after a long silence.

Startled, Sophia looked up, "Ah?" Seeing a smile spreading across Damien’s face, she quickly nodded, bowing her head to inspect her attire once more. Her gown was a bespoke creation, complemented by a necklace that could certainly be considered a piece of fine jewelry. Sophia felt quite pleased with her look for the evening.

Sophia Greenwood smiled at Damien Sterling, "I’m ready, Damien darling. What do you think?"

"You look beautiful," Damien said with a smile.

His grandfather’s words echoed in his ears, reminding him of the evening’s purpose: to publicly affirm the enduring alliance between the Sterling and Greenwood families, and to dissuade any opportunists from thinking they could exploit any perceived weakness.

As the driver stepped forward to open the car door, Damien exited first. The crowd around them had already gathered in anticipation. Damien’s importance was evident by the crowd that lined up along both sides of the vehicle. As Sophia stepped down from the car, Damien was already waiting, hand extended with a welcoming smile. Their hands clasped together.

Side by side, Damien and Sophia, supported by admiring gazes, made their way across the red carpet and into the banquet hall. Under the watchful eyes of many, especially the single women, Sophia was the epitome of a woman elevated to the heights of happiness.

What could be more enviable than being the companion of a wealthy and talented man like Damien Sterling? Perhaps only Emma Hart’s position as the woman Damien worried about could compare.

Meanwhile, Emma Hart was wandering the streets, dismissive of Damien’s attentions. She walked along the sidewalk, her phone silent in her pocket, feeling somewhat embarrassed despite the lack of onlookers. She pulled out her phone with a scoff, thinking it must have run out of battery—that would explain why his calls had stopped so abruptly.

Checking her phone, she saw only the missed calls from earlier. Damien had called just a few times? Emma stared down at the screen displaying fifteen missed calls.

This was the limit for Damien Sterling; he never made second calls to anyone, yet he had dialed her number fifteen times.

Once again, Emma Hart’s phone rang, and her face quickly lit up with a hopeful smile. However, a touch of disappointment surfaced as she lifted the phone to her eyes.

Frowning, Emma suddenly remembered and hastily answered, "Hello? Oliver?"

On the other end, Oliver Westmore’s voice carried a hint of fatigue, "Emma, where are you? I’ve been waiting downstairs at your office since I got off work. I was worried you hadn’t left yet. Why haven’t you come out?"

Emma had completely forgotten about her plans with Oliver. She had agreed to meet him but had gotten distracted thinking about going to see Damien Sterling after work.

"I’m so sorry, I... I forgot," Emma apologized.

"Where are you now? I’ll come pick you up."

"I..." Emma hesitated, instinctively wanting to refuse, but remembering Damien was currently at a banquet holding another woman’s hand, she quickly agreed, "I’ll send you my location."

It didn’t take long for Oliver to arrive at Emma’s location. He hurriedly got out of the car and turned on the headlights, casting a dim light around Emma.

Oliver took off his jacket and draped it over Emma, his eyes full of concern. "Why did you come out here?"

"I’m not cold," Emma said, dodging to the side, "You better put it back on!"

The place wasn’t far from her company, but Emma had gotten off the car determinedly. In just a short while, she wasn’t sure which direction she had wandered. Emma thought about her lack of safety awareness; her phone battery was low, and if she ended up in an unknown place without the ability to call a car, she wondered how she would get home.

Opening the car door, Emma immediately noticed the flowers on the seat. It seemed Oliver had made bringing her flowers a regular habit when they met.

Emma picked up the flowers and brought them close to her nose, "They smell wonderful, but flowers don’t last long once they’re off the stem."

"Next time, I’ll buy you everlasting flowers," Oliver replied naturally.

Emma thought her indirect way of rejecting Oliver’s flowers would be understood, but apparently, it wasn’t.

"Where are we headed?" she asked.

"I have a banquet to attend. Join me?" Oliver extended his hand in invitation.
